I like the suggestions I've seen so far. Thank you!

Perhaps I could add to them and suggest that POY be something of a
culmination of the challenges with the POY selected from those winners
as well as those who've either not had the opportunity to enter a previous
challenge or perhaps are new to the site?

About the idea of putting the POY in the challenge thread and suspending the challenge, I think that is fine, but there should be announcments in other areas.

Many people do not enter the challenges for reasons that are their own, personally I do not enter it often, even though I vote most of the time. People that do not visit the challenges but participate in other forums may miss it.

I entered the POY just to participate, I did not shoot much this year as I worked way too much, but I know there are some great photographers on Dgrin whose work always amazes me that did not enter.

I also would like to point out that e-mailing the images in did not work last year, and it did not work this year. I dunno why but I know I followed the directions both years and my name and caption was stripped from the image both times. I think people would prefer a different less confusing method of entering.

Lastly, I know it is the end of the year, but december is very busy for may of us and maybe people are just to busy to stay up with things.

    Just some thoughts.

Ian I'm not singling you out, just using your quote that has been said a few times now.
I don't think the POTY should have anything to do with the other challenges, and I'll show why.
Right now the challenge is Cheese. I took both of these shots during this challenge. Neither is eligible for "Cheese".

Now, I'm not saying these could win anything, but by using the challenge winners, I don't even get a chance to enter these.
There are to many great photographers here that don't enter the challenges, but should be able to post a shot for POTY.

The way it is now, that any photo taken and posted during the year should be eligible.
I think a person should have to enter the photo themselves. No free rides. You enter or you don't, but it's your decision, no one else's.

Go back and re-read my post. I do believe that it's the challenge shots AND others because as you also point out, you may not have had the opportunity to shoot the cheese lol3.gif

Small hijack, this is a really nice shot. Something we don't see on the
    West Coast. Nicely done.

I read it 4 times. These still would not be eligible.

I've entered a previous challenge, and I'm not new to the site. mwink.gif

Thanks. That shot is now showing in the nature/wildlife forum.

My intent is to include the challenge winners and anyone else. Sorry if that
    didn't come across. My error.

I hope that next year more participate for there were many really great shots that were not entered-
me too, and that more people take the time to vote. that one is still a headscratch.gif

    Two thoughts on this...
    1. even though I browse dgrin at least two or three days a week, I didn't realize we were in voting for poty until very late in the first round when someone posted a PSA thread on it in one of the fora... heck, I had utterly forgotten about it until then! Hence why I never got my entry in. I don't know what it is about the current announcement system, but it seems to just fly under my radar somehow. This isn't the first time something in the announcement section has done this... iirc the shoot out was one too. ne_nau.gifheadscratch.gif
    2. Seeing the threads of trouble that the email your photo system seemed to cause, might well have discouraged some folks from even trying to submit. Any reason this DOESN'T follow the same pattern as the normal challenge threads? That seems to work very very well... and all the "who's is this?" questions would be completely eliminated, as well as the "you didn't use my caption..." or "that's my name, not my caption..." issues as well. About the only thing I can think of that the email system affords that the normal one does not, is preventing folks from changing their submission; but is that really a concern? (if so it's trivially fixable)

To circle back to the original topic here, I followed a lot of the commentary on DIGG back when it first was hot and noticed one very kew thing... a lot of the folks on digg flat out did NOT get the concept, and in the inevitable slashdot mentality that followed, we, the dgrin community, came off in the minds of some diggers as conceited arrogant jerks. :cry Which as anyone that's been here for a while knows, is utterly WRONG... but it's clearly what some diggers thought from the way it was presented to them. ne_nau.gif

Yeah, they thought we were claiming the best POY for the entire galaxy, not just our site.

At which points that ones that hadn't even "RTFA" dropped the year's time constraint from that and thought it was the entire galaxy for all time. Oi.
