I woke up this morning with a familair sensation. I haven't bought a new lens in over a year. I have tried to resist but my lens lust is out of control.

The two contenders are:

Probably the sharpest and fastest focusing long lens I've tried -

The nikon 400 2.8

or the longest reach zoom available (curse you Pathfinder for bring into my home)

The Sigma 300-800 5.6

I realize that this my end up in divorce court, cost extra $ for medical treatments for my back plus time off for hernia operations but I don't care.

Help!!!!!!

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

That cost is built in and goes w/o saying. Just double the lens price to get to the starting cost.

I'm going to help you get the lens...and keep the girl.

Do you have a pair of running shoes, black sweatshirt & sweatpants and a hammer? eek7.gif:D Just checking.

I say go the PRIME route. Get the 400mm f/2.8. That's a sweet piece of glass. Not purdy white...but still sweet. deal.gif

Get the monster. You already have one of the sweetest long primes available and you seem to have nice light all the time. Will the 400/2.8 really give you that much more that the 500/4 can't? Maybe if you were shooting in dark gloomy Yukon all the time, but come on, it's Florida!

Or, sell the 500, and get both the above :D

    Sigmonster or Nikon prime? ne_nau.gif

But, I know what you can do with the "old" lens(es) that you'll be replacing...It'll only be a slight burden, but I'm sure I could provide a foster home for the poor little dear(s). mwink.gif

That's the way I'm leaning but...... If I get the 400 then I would have to sell the 500 because I can't think of a good reason to keep both but if I get the Sigmonster I could rationalize keeping the 500.

Or I go with you hammer idea, hit Linda over the head. Not hard just hard enough for a short coma and then buy both the 400 and the Sigmonster and keep the 500. naughty.gif Of course if I had all 3 I would need a second tripod and a bigger car.

Harry, you need to drink a Corona and calm down.rolleyes1.gif

Next week you can shoot with a Sigmonster and see for youself if it is really what you want. You will just have to put up with shooting with my 1DMkll, instead of your trusty Nikon. It is too big, too heavy, and tripod bound. But you already know that. Also, 800mm really is not that much longer than 700. I think the jump from 500 + 1.4 TX, is not 800mm, but 1000-1200mm. I brought a 2x to use with my 500 like Fabs was posting.

As for the 400 f2.8, I suspect the Nikon is like the Canon 400 f2.8, big, heavy, very expensive, and rarely needed when a 400 f4 or f5.6 would not work as well. In Florida, f2.8 is not needed, unless you shoot after dark.mwink.gif

I would suggest keeping the tools you have, and take a trip to Bosque or Ding Darling, or come shoot with Marc in Utah in May......

I know you already know all this - you just need your friends to help keep you straightened out. We all suffer lens lust from time to time, but we usually figure out that new lenses are not the answer after we have good enough tools already.

    Harry,
It sounds like you might be in a “No Win” situation. So I would error in my own favor.
I don’t know about Florida, but in California personal property is split 50/50 in a divorce.
So you might want to check with the iloveyou.gifwife if see has a preference on which lens to buy.

    OR

You can claim "Twinkie defense". You were on a surgar high and could not control yourself.
    Just a thought......

That's what I like, moderation talk from a man who has the Canon 500 F4, the Sigmonster, and the Tamron 200-500.

Its kind of like a liquor store owner preaching abstinence to a wino. :lol4blbl.gif

I can't do the shoot in Utah, too many Mormons. They are all clean cut, neat and happy. That would be way too depressing.

Well I really can't tell you what to get. I would think that you wouldn't need such a fast lens in Florida with the Canon 400mm. The sigmonster is just, well, overkill and that is why I like it. mwink.gif

BTW, it is nice to know that I am not the only one who suffers from horrible bouts of lens lust.
