Well, if the Vista security is like Windows AV (or whatever it was called) Beta 1, then the commercial is kinda true....if it's more like Windows Defender Beta 2 as every review says, yes the security ad is bogus.

Even more misleading is the webcam one. Apple implies that they were the first and are currently the only computer that offers a built-in webcam. They were not first and they are certainly not the only.

It's pretty sad (though I know some will see it as smart) for Apple that they feel their only chance to capture any of the computer market is to spread lies about their competition (not just MS, but PC manufacturers). Political campaigns based on this are usually what makes me vote for the other guy. Apple doesn't act that way with the iPod - they never bash the competition because they're so much better than the competition. They just let a great product sell itself. I wish they'd do the same with the computers (which I have no doubt are great).

    hmmm,
ya know i gotta tell ya that for all practical purposes, the Ads Apple produce - despite being funny IMHO are true. well they are true at least from my perspective. Apple's products for the home consumer ( iMac, MacBook, MacMini ) really are geared for a generation of consumers "WANTING FUN and EASE" with the kinds of apps that make using a computer enjoyable - iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie, iWeb, iDvd, iChat, garageband and podcasting ability etc...
I dont think Apple says in their ads we are the "professional's choice".
From an educational perspective, the software and hardware included on macbooks , emacs, imacs FAR EXCEEDS the value and utility offered by any other competitor period at this time. 2 years ago i started using macs for teaching urban, special needs children. What APPLE offers is an outstanding price for form, function, and ease....
I dont know how many will appreciate this statement by Jim Cramer....
    APPLE GETS IT !!!

If there is one universal truth I know it is that there is no such thing as a universal truth.

No tool can equally well serve low end and high end, pros and n00bs, etc.

You're saying that macs are great for special ed kids. I believe you deal.gif
However, since I'm not one of them, it also means it's not gonna serve me equally well...ne_nau.gif

I guess I'll stick with the tools to were specifically designed to serve my personal, slightly more professional, needs.mwink.gif

well thats kinda my point... Apple isnt IMHO trying to get the professionals attention with their ads - theyre after the mass market of everyday, ordinary consumers.
BTW, what the hell do i know anyway about these things... im still reading Pogue's Book - Switching to the Mac.

    peace,

I'm glad I can wholeheartedly agree with you. Uninitiated users (booboisies in Dan's terms) can greatly benefit from macs, since they will cover their basic needs (and with a great style at it) and won't let them screw up.

I'm also wondering when the PC guy in those ads will start farting and vomiting: it would get their designated audience even a greater level of comprehension...

    Nik,

I'm not gonna enter the PC/Mac debate, but that logic you just posted...you should know better, Mr. Engineer. That's a non-sequitur if I ever saw one. :D

Unfortunately, it is. There is an old engineering saying: "Make a device any fool can use - and only fools will use it". While I admit it is an exaggeration (as pretty much any saying is), there is certain amount of truth to it.

I also do not like mac/pc debates myself, since they are totally pointless (as any holy war is: canon vs nikon, christians vs muslems, etc).

Unfortunately, it appears to be next to impossible to discuss any windows-specific issue (like Vista upgrade) without having a dozen or more of apple users showing up and starting "switch to mac" chanting. ne_nau.gif

Finally, people admtting that Apple is a pop culture machine for the masses and not misleading everyone on how it's the best workstation around.

Yeah, Apple gets it. People want to be spoon fed "fun" stuff and make sure its proprietary so they can brand it and make people feel like they are part of a special club. Oooooh, it's sleek and white and has the Apple logo!rolleyes1.gif

The PC gives me freedom. Freedom to build it to do what I want. I really don't give a frick if the Mac OS is prettier or cooler, just as long as I can get the MS OS to do what I want it to, and I can, I've been perfectly happy with XP Pro.

Apple markets trendy now. It's the cool thing. It's a brand. I prefer my mp3 players to be non-proprietary. I prefer my computer to be non-proprietary.

The argument about who innovates first and who copies is amusing. The american way has been to incoporate other cultures and designs and to then "americanize" them. It's the best working final product that counts in the end, not the product it was based on.

Notice not once did I say the PC is better, nor did I say Apple was inferior in performance. Apple is marketed to a certain segment and its marketed very well. I would be happier if that segment didn't feel the constant need to reaffirm their overpaying for a brand by constantly stating how much better they think their stuff is.

    My take
We all hafta have a OS of some kind either for PC or MAC.

I will agree that a MAC is superior to a PC....much easier to get programs and the like for a PC. PC's being more dominate than MAC's.
Billy boy has cornered the market but I hafta say He has the public by the ole kahunas.

I must say I like the look of VISTA but am in no hurry to UG to it till all the bugs are out.
I refuse to pay for a Nice Fancy OS just to be a lab rat for Microsloth! eek7.gif
I must admit that Office 2007 package is the cats meow.
Best revamp of the package I've seen in YEARS!
    Love the new OUTLOOK 2007!thumb.gif

BTW: I've been puttering with Microsloth products/Computers since Dos 4.0 and Windows 3.0 so I'm no stranger to the whole gig.
