I have been reading a lot about this 70-200mm f/2.8 lens recently, and most reveiws of the IS and non-IS agree that at the 200mm length the IS is useful. I decided to go with the IS though mainly because I probably will never shoot with a tripod of any sort, anytime soon.

Another wise choice in lenses! You are doing your homework. Canon's 70-200 line are all fantastic lenses & you really cannot go wrong wit hany of them. The choice boils down to your needs and budget. The IS is a nice feature for squeezing that last couple of stops when you have to handhold, but you do have to remember the limitations as well.
I am handholding less and starting to use at least a monopod more and more. The monopod is convenient for when you're on the move, I have gotten into the habit of leaving it attached and locking it collapsed along the underside of the lens--I use the Mafrotto 3232 1-axis head. It deploys quickly from there and I have a semi-stable base to shoot from.
I'm thinking of taking it out to the park for the 4th of July. I've never had too much luck shooting fireworks, but maybe with this piece of glass i can get something decent. And I have tickets to the Dodgers on the 5th so watch for those in the sports thread
Oh I will! Tomorrow though, after I chase down the UPS driver. He doesn't usually get to my house until 5 or 6pm but he works a nearby shopping center from 10:30am-1pm. He said I'm always welcome to track him down and he'll get my package off the truck

Okay all you thievers... you can go about your business now. The lens is off the truck and in my hot little hands! Sorry for the lame pictures. There's not much exciting going on in my living room at the moment.

Jennifer, I think your 70-200 is still on the brown truck. That looks like a 1.4x extender to me, not a lens. Hopefully this wasn't a case of bait & switch :giggle :giggle
Just kidding! Congratulations, you will love that glass. Now you will be sucked in to buy even more 'L's.
