Experimenting with an old "Promaster Spectrum 7" 1.7X TC on EF 300 f4 IS
I was actually thinking of getting rid of this thing, results are not too bad.
Very little USM applied. The only downside: too much reach for this particular shot.

But the reach worked better for this camera to subject distance
158350373-O.jpg

Usable ISO 800 (some noise reduction applied)

And some recent images from Bolsa taken alongside fellow DGRINers Jeff, William and Ron

158350530-O.jpg

And no post on Bolsa is ever complete without the ubiquitous Tern

This lady was probably wondering: " shouldn't those guys be out walking their dogs?" :D

C&C welcome, enjoy

Great shots Russ! You guys got some nice tern shots this time around! Too bad that lady didn't bother to read all the "no dogs" signs posted throughout the reserve.

Great question Wally, as you can imagine the focussing is not that great on the 20D, maybe better on a pro body. I won't use it to capture a moving turtlerolleyes1.gif , but in terms of resolution it seems a to perform better than my Canon 1.4X, I still have to test them side by side though. All the Bolsa shots were taken with the 300 f4 IS

Who...what...little old me? accidentally PSing my images eek7.gif ...rolleyes1.gif
I sometimes tend to over process my images, but not this one. Apart from very little cropping, and less than the usual USM, it is very close to the original RAW file. 300mm x 1.7TC x 1.6 crop factor = 816mm @ f4.5 that's a lot of reach but I still dream of owning a 500 f4.
    Thanks Marina

Great shots, Russ, especially the two terns in chase. Fantastice capture--composition, framing, exposure, focus--the works. That first one is kind of gross, though, unless you're a house finch.

As for the dogs, I agree that at least she kept hers on a leash--but it's still a bad example in a nesting area of a wildlife refuge that's posted no dogs. The last time I was at Bolsa Chica the birds were being frightened away from the tidegate area by loose dogs and kids throwing stones. Everytime I see these things now I aim my camera at the offenders and start taking pics. It makes some of them stop.
