Tough round with soo many good entries, but if I had to nail it down, it would be (with critiques):

    1. Surfer's Halo by Shamguess
    180714798-Th-1.jpg
For me, this is the best of the LPS year so far. Perfectly fits the theme and technically flawless....bowdown.gif

    2. Amber Waves by SaltFork
    179866577-Th-1.jpg
Of all the turf images, this one struck me as the best. If I was going to do anything, I'd perhaps make the sky a deeper blue and increase the contrast in the mountains to bring out some detail, but still very relaxing to look at.

    3. Lonely Lifeguard Stand by Felicia
    180769994-Th.jpg
This one combines elements of both turf and surf and the colors work well for me in this. The true horizon, which is a third down from the top is almost totally lost against the sky, so the effective horizon becomes the white wash of the surf. It's central location works well for me in this image and the image has a very peaceful feel.

    4. Low Tide by Stan
    178355566-S.jpg
Another technically flawless image in my eyes. The simplicity of the composition is it's strong point and the photo gives me a feeling of solitude and an ability to get away from it all. That's exactly why I go to the beach almost every day, just to unwind.

    5. Off the Edge by fOOsion
    178853424-S-1.jpg
Almost as good as Surfer's Halo. had to be top 10...bowdown.gif

    6. Point Reyes Summer by LiquidAir
    179233876-Th.jpg
The composition and colors draw me in to this image. The foreground interest with the rocks is attractive, but it's the overall feel of the photo that really grabs my attention. Another peaceful feeling image that fits the theme but is opposite to the surfing images which have much more action and tension.

    7. Gettin'soaked by McGyver
    DSC_4814%20nx.jpg?imgmax=800
This one is again, spot on to the theme, but with this photo, I'm not just observing the scene, I'm right in it. That I'm a participant in the photo makes this a big top 10 choice for me.

    8. Timelessness by Travis
    179549828-S.jpg
Classic image that just throws me back in time. Everything about it from the composition to the processing gives me a classical surf feel.

    9. Beach Breakers at Nightfall by PaulThomasMcKee
    179623689-Th.jpg
The tension in this image gives me a sense of what the surfer is gonig through. The broken lines in the surf and diagonal line from the surfer to the sail add to the feeling of action. The high contrast between the surfer/sail and the sky gives my eye somewhere to focus on and it's easy to pick the subject. I'd like some more detail in the waves at the foreground, but that's only a minor thing.

    10. Ship Sailing on a Sea of Grass by SunsetSailor
    179070845-Th.jpg
This has a strong turf feel, but the comical element of the composition really adds to the message and makes me focus even more on the grass. If I was to do anything, I'd clone out that small bird in the sky. It doesn't really identify strongly as a bird and doesn't add to the image, so I'd get rid of it.

As I see it, that's 7 that are surf, 2 that are turf and 1 that combines elements of both. Don't know if that is significant, but I do love the beach.

    Regards,

    Peter

Well, it's going to be impossible to give feedback on 80 + photos at once. So I'm going to break it up into more manageable sized chunks. Before we begin, let me lay out my biases:

#1- I hate shots of dogs, kids, and selectively colored objects, so if you are going to do it, it had better be extra good.

#2 Dynamic is better than static.

#3 information rich images are better than images that are information poor.

#4- I think that photos which address the theme, all other things being equal, trump photos that don't; photos that address both themes trump those that address only one, and photos that establish dynamic tension between the two themes are the best of all, and that this is the reason themes exist.

#5- I do not follow or stick to my own rules very tightly, except for the one about selective coloring. I can also be bought very cheaply.

#2 Sex Education at Sea, Jwear

I like this shot a lot. It's very sharp, important for nature shots, the DOF is good, I like the fact that the other birds are different, but don't steal focus from the central act of the photo. The birds are well positioned, and the eye of the principal subject is dead on. It has water in it, so there is surf, of sorts. Well done.

    #3. It's what's for dinner- Hurricane Steve
    178006360-S.jpg

Unlike your last submission, this shot doesn't do much for me. I see the riff on the "turf" in "surf or turf." But I am not going for it. In general, i would have prefered more "interaction' between the cow and the viewer (if you know what I mean). I also would have made a different choice on the color temp.

#4. Just another day at Bering Sea- Vandana
    178217756-S.jpg

This is a nice shot, and one I am sure was hard to get. So, the fact that
I would have prefered a more "actiony" shot ( a whale jumping out of the water, attacking a fishing boat, etc) is a bit much. You obviously can't pose whales. Nevertheless, I would have prefered a shot with more action. Also, a less hazy day. And I would have cropped a touch more sky in, that mountaintop is quite cramped. Overall, however, this is a very good photo.

    #5 Fisheye- Jboeckler

Kid shots are tough. They are also tough to critique because they automatically get the shooter wrapped up in emotional issues (its easy to mistake a critique of a child's photograph with a critique of a particular child). But this is LPS, so I ain't gonna pull any punches. In order for a photograph of a child to be interesting it has to comply with the same demands, to the general viewer, that any other photo would have to comply with. It has to be lighted dramatically, or contain interesting action or compositional dynamism. It has to tell a story that interests the viewer.

This photo is a cute kid with a fish. I imagine that it is the photographers kid, and thus it is very interesting to them. I have no personal connection to this photo, so it doesn't capture my attention.

    #6- Low Tide- Stan
    178355566-S.jpg

This is a nice shot. The rich earthy tone of the mud contrasts nicely with the equally rich blue of the sky. The sky is nicely marbled with clouds. I suppose that one of the features of this landscap is its featurlessness, but that is a tad esoteric. I would like to see a different crop than this, which emphasises either earth or sky.

#7 Ship Sailing on a Sea of Grass- Sunset Sailor

    179070845-S.jpg
Very Clever. I love a lot of elements of this photo. It's the first one from the entries that really nails the theme unequivocally, although, given my ideas of how themes ought to work, this may be the kiss of death for you.
In a general aesthetic sense, the framing and comp is cool. I love the way the eye is pulled to several focus points; the ship, the flower, and the clouds sort of take the viewer on "a tour" of the shot. The colors are inviting. The idea of "turf" as "surf" is interesting thematically, and the photo is surprising even outside the context of this contest, as the ship appears to, indeed, be sailing on grass. Cool.

#8 Anything T' Spare Up There? Hoofclix
    LPS10%20Entry1.jpg

As a rule, I really, reeeaaaally hate pet and kid shots. This one, however, escapes the schlockiness that is the hallmark of so many photos of this type. It satisfies the requisite cuteness, not hard to do with dogs (my hating of child and pet photos stands in contrast to me liking pets and kids, I assure you). The crop is very interesting, and this crop is crucial to making the photo work. The interest is drawn, naturally, to the tender deliciousnesss of the succulent meat that some people on this forum have been foolish enough to forswear. Once the viewer spends a few minutes anticipating the next opportunity he/she will have to eat such a steak (like me), or tasting the bittersweet tang of les temps perdu (like some others); the dog ends up as a humerous shock. The length of the crop is necessary to make it a photo to be viewed in two segements rather than one, in which case it would simply be a dog standing next to a grill. Well done.

Unfortunately, it's almost totally off theme. Unless you count the grass. So maybe it is in theme. I don't know.

#9 To the Back 40- Tessa HD
    178803401-S.jpg

I like this shot- but I am biased, being from Tennessee and having spent many a summer on just such a back 40 myself. Thematically, I lik the quality of the turf. I do think, however, a more pano type crop would have been better.

    #10 Surfer's Halo- Shamguess
    180714798-S-1.jpg
Spectacular. Bang on the theme, (surf, of course), but a really dramatic shot, with the surfer literally "exploding" out of the wave. Really couldn't get any better of a surf shot than this, unless there was a shark in it or something. this is most definitely in my top 10. No other comments on this photo needed, it is what it is.

    #11 tiny dancers- Saurora

    178876592-S.jpg

A very nice shot of someone else's children (see note on #5). I imagine that Saurora and I have very different philosophies concerning dog and kid shots. The turf color is pleasent and the post processing on this shot is (as always) superb. I simply am not feeling it. De gustibus non est disputandum.

#12 Surf for Water Striders- Joan

    179721890-S.jpg

The technical elements of this shot are good. No complaints there. Compositionally, however, I feel that the shot lacks focus. I prefer some of the more dramatic landscapes from this photographer's portfolio.

    #13 Turf Surfer Ecquiesscence
    179139463-S.jpg
This shot is awesome. I love the color choices made on post processing, they really fit the subject. One thing keeps this photo from being perfect, and that is that the fact that the leftmost rider is cropped out. This breaks the circle pattern of the composition, and wrecks it for me. I still love the photo, I just can't get over that particular element.

    #14 Wooden Waves Lazy TJ
    179183038-S-1.jpg

This photo is OK from a technical point of view, and I see some interesting compositional elements. I might have preferred a longer more pano type crop that replicates more of the "wave" action of the wood.

#15 Point Reyes Summer- Liquid Air
    179233876-S.jpg

I took a great shot of a cheesy 1950s looking lifeguard at Coney Island yesterday doing cheesy exercises ike an extra from beach blanket bingo.

Once I saw this shot, however, I didn't even bother post processing. Thematically- it is dead on. Aesthetically- the post processing is perfect. The crop is just right. The scene itself is beautiful. If you show your face in Jersey City I'll break your fricken' legs because you are evil and must be destroyed, obviously having made some sort of contract with the devil. This is not only in my top 10, its' my favorite shot of this cycle.

    #16 Night Inspector -Greensquared
    180804787-S.jpg

this is very cool, and very turfy. The DOF is nice, and I am left wondering if greensquared dug up her yard just for the sake of the competition. this shot is surprising. Well done.

#17 Riding the Sea- Antonio Correia
    179090278-S.jpg

the balance and symetry of the two surfers in this shot are good. The crop is nice as well. Unfortunately, this is very similar to another shot with a much more dramatic, stormy sunset background, so I would have to choose that one over this. Unfortunately, with photography, a lot has to do with the luck of the time and places you are able to shoot.

    #18 Surfing in Kodiak, Clovisguy
    179384923-S.jpg

this shot is cool. I like contrast between the body types of the bears (that one in the background is surprisingly skinny). I would have made different choices with the post processing, however. I feel that the color is a bit off, and the photo lacks a bit of pop.

#19 the Mystical Adventures of Jimmy the Pig Prezwoods

    178577566-S-1.jpg

I love the surrealism of this shot. It looks like a prelude to another shot called "porkus atomicus" or something. The giant television screen or whatever is particularly out of place. Ditch the story, however, the whole point of surrealism is that it defies narratives. This photo in no way fulfills the theme, which again is in keeping with its surrealism. It also has no visible desire to conform to the rules of photographic aesthetics. In a similar contrarian spirit, it is thus in my top 10.

I like this photo- the processing is cool. The pano crop is nice (It's shwing up a lot more in this contest than it usually does). It does in fact look timeless. Not sure if it would be in my top 10, I have to think about it, but I have no suggestions to improve or critiques of this photo. It is very, very good.

    #21 Flowing wall- Swintonphoto

    176858819-S.jpg

To my mind, black and white photos ought usually to be minimalist, as the fact that there are only two colors available (or one, for the overly picky) makes it easy for an overabundance of varied objects to collapse into a sort of "noise." I really don't understand why this photo is B&W. I find this strange, because so many of the photos, particularly the cathedral shots, in your portfolio are excellent monochromes. Also, the river portion seems a bit overexposed. I get the feeling that you submitted this because nothing else seemed to fit the theme. I found myself in the same position, because my shots were all uninspiring this week. I was very close to submitting a picture of dog doo on a roofing tile, and titling it "The Vienna Secession" but I figured it might permanently alienate the judges and reduce my future opportunities for Ca$h and prizes.

    #22 Off the edge- F00sion

    178853424-S-1.jpg

good tight sports shot, very crisp, good exposure (although perhaps a little more detail in the hair might be cool, did you shoot this in RAW). Unfortunately, I don't think this reaches quite the level of the previous surf shot, with its extraordinary halo.

This is not only in my top 10, its' my favorite shot of this cycle.

    couldn't do it...
...I just couldn't manage to get it down to 10 this time, sorry.

I, too, am glad I'm not a judge...must be tough. And I, too, have left out at least 10 that it hurt to leave out - - probably yours. nod.gif

    great job, everyone

    good luck, judges

    #10 Surfer's Halo by Shamguess
Damn Dude! Awesome, awesome, awesome. Obviously the "fan" makes this extra special - the best of many good surf shots.

Special moment amidst the crowd, very cute. Like the subtle vignette.

    179139463-Th.jpg
#13 - Turf Surfer by Equiessence
This is a great photograph, a photographer's photograph. Somehow I missed it the first time around, it's subtle ... a documentary style. One of my favorites. Just knocked one out to put this in. Truly a great piece of art for me. Well done!

    179233876-Th.jpg
#15 - Point Reyes Summer- Liquid Air
Good composition (although the centered rock still bothers me), great tone, good crop and best of all, this feels right with a mood to it.

    #20 - Timelessness by Travis
Love this retro image. Great crop, good subtle tones. I miss Virginia!

#28 - In the Absence of Tide by Anwmn
Simple, excellent comp. Might have been better a little more wide angle and closer to first footprint but just my personal taste. The anti-turf photo. Very nice.

Love it, love it, love it. Takes me there! I can feel getting pounded by the wave. You deserve a smugmug account (so I can post a thumbmwink.gif )

#52 - Reaching Out From Deep Within by shatch
Nailed it! For theme and execution of concept, this is the winner of the challenge for me. This is A-1 advertising material. Had a similar idea myself but this concept and execution is infinitely better than mine was. Excellent!!!!!!! I assume this is a composition of four (?) images but it is fairly well done, a little more work and worthy for stock and advertising.

#60 - Carefree and Living it by Peterst6906
Again, excellent concept and execution! Great composition, love the curve ... makes it special. Would crop out some of sky at the top (I understand though why it's in). Really, really good. Great ad/stock material.

#82 - Summer Dream by seastack
Hey, what can I say ... it's mine, I like it, and I think it's worthy. Gotta be real.

    Honorable Mention:
    180764512-Th.jpg
#74 - Fishing on the beach by Dee
Good compostion and lighting. Glad the fog cleared!!!! Got down to 11 picks, had to cut one but not sure this is the right cut.

    My Top 12
Since I am new here at DGrin, I want to say how humbled I am by all the wonderful talent displayed in the LPS entries. This was my 3rd try and each time I have learned from the discussion threads and the process of participating. The judges will have a tremendous challenge and my gratitude and sympathy for the difficult decisions they have to make. It was hard for me to pick my top 10 - I had 3 tied for the 10th spot so I just included them.

    Wow! Thanks, Trayci.

I'm just a part-time amateur, and photography for me is very personal. I entered LPS coz I thought it would be fun and hoped that I would learn a few things along the way. What I have found though, is that I am learning so much more just by seeing other photographers' work and creativity.

So, I would like to say thanks to everyone for your wonderful pics! They are simply awesome! clap.gif

Anyway, to be mentioned in anyone's list of favourites is completely unexpected and very much appreciated. Hopefully, I can keep on improving and growing as a photographer.

Escape from the data you thought did you?

Well, you can figure that this thread shows the opinions of at least 14 of us. Compared to the official thread of 5 opinions, you might say that the way this thread thinks is more the way the popular vote would go in an open vote in for a SemiFinal round. Just figuring who people took in their top 10, not giving points for rank, the top 4 rank like this, in this order resoundingly:

    #52 Shatch
    #10&15 (tied)Shamguess and Liquid Air
    #82 Seastack

Close behind together are #20 Travis and #23 Paul McKee
Just behind them are #40 McGyver and #50 SaltFork

So that is your popular "Top Eight" with the next two being rather unclear...

I suppose that my opinion goes with the flow as well, as really I think the top 4 are the very best of the lot, with, IMHO, Seastack's being the single very best, even if I can't see the supposed slight sepia!

Great round everyone! It is really humbling to me who thought when entering this board back in LPS6 that I was some really hot piece of $#%&, that I really have so, so much yet to learn!:wow
