Hi y'all,

Thom Hogan is saying that Nikon will announce new DSLRs and lenses on 8/23.

The consensus rumor I've seen on-line is:

D3
- FX format (Full frame) 12Mpixel CMOS made by Nikon
- 9 fps in FF mode, 11 fps in HSC mode
- HSC is done at 1.5 crop factor (meaning DX size)
- ISO 200 - 6400 with LO (iso100 equiv), H1 and H2 (iso 12800/25600).

D300
- DX format 12Mpixel CMOS (most likely same as D2X)
- 6 fps and boost to 8 fps with power grip (no HSC mode)
- ISO 200 - 3200 with LO (iso100 equiv), H1 (iso 6400)

D3 and D300 share the same AF system. 51 AF points. 15 of them are cross sensor.
Supports live view mode. Switch to contrast based AF in live view mode.

Five new lenses.

- AF-S 14-24/2.8 G
- AF-S 24-70/2.8 G
- AF-S VR 400/2.8 G
- AF-S VR 500/4 G
- AF-S VR 600/4 G

"iso 12800/25600"? Some new breakthrough in quantum physics?

I'll eat some broccoli if it's true. (I hate broccoli.)

I'll even take pictures of me smiling eating broccoli, if it's true. (I hate broccoli.) (You will hate pictures of me eating broccoli.)

The real trick is getting an ISO of 12800 that's usable. :D

'Course I hid my post. :) More info is coming out everyday over at Nikon Cafe. Who knows though, right?

I heard from a little birdie that you may be switching systems though? Not true? Or are you waiting to see what this so called release will be?

The real question is "Would Nikon put something unusable on their flapship camera?"

Historically, I thnk Nikon has been pretty conservative with useless features.

Harry... what ever happened to ISO 50 or 80? Now that's something "usable" that I'd like to see. Do away with noise all together...

    And I'd luv to see a new Avatar on Ziggys posts! (o;

I ain't switching yet. The Mark III had me interested but its focusing issues and Canon's non-reponse response have cooled my interest off for the moment.

I'm just sitting back and waiting for the dust to settle. I want a D2H with more resolution and less noise. Whoever comes out with that will get my $.

This isn't the "flagship", that should be out in the first or second quarter of next year.

More than we would like to pay. :cry

I would guess $4000 plus for the D3 and $2000 plus for the D300 with next year's "flagship" going for around 8K.

Right, so Harry's building a nice, comfy seat on top of the fence. blbl.gif

It will be interesting to see what the response is. I noticed over on DPR it's like a kicked-over anthill in the Nikon forums. :heh:lurk

This is going to be one of the biggest announcements in Nikon history, at least when it comes to digital stuff. Just a few days more, and you'll know it all.:D

I do hope their time-to-market is reasonably short, though.

I saw this on dpreview... :D

    http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1021&message=24480590

A little more grabbed from Google...

    from: popsci.typepad.com/popsci/2007/08/nikons-pro-came.html

It leads with the Deathstar of SLRs, the D3. The biggest change is, in fact, one of bigness. Nikon equipped the new camera with a 36x23.9-millimeter image sensor that’s nearly as large as an old 35-milimeter film frame. Previously only Canon made these “full-frame” sensors, which capture extreme wide-angle shots and have larger pixels to soak in more light.

A small step below the D3 is the new D300. Its 12.2-megapixel sensor is in the standard size of 24-by-16 millimeters, and sensitivity stops at a still-impressive ISO 3200 ... Otherwise, it’s virtually identical to the D3, and probably at a steep discount. The D200 it’s replacing currently costs about $1600.It will be going head-to-head with Canon’s other new camera, the 10.1-megapixel EOS 40D which sells for $1300.

I spent a few happy weeks with the D200 last summer and fell in love with its easy controls and spot-on color accuracy. My only gripe was with the low-light performance—an area where Canon dominates. If Nikon’s new focus on light-sensitivity pays off, we’re in for a real clash of the camera titans.

Dang, people "do" read my gibberish!

    Broccoli it is.

If anyone has one of the pre-production Nikon D3 cameras, and wants to loan it to me so I can use ISO 25,600 and candlelight, send me an e-mail. thumb.gif (... because otherwise I am shooting with a Canon, and the irony is so much sweeter with Nikon ...)

I think the 25,600 is going to be like the 3200 is on the D200. Use it at your own risk. The real interest is going to be in how well the new cams up to 3200 and 6400. If it's outstanding, then that's big news for Nikon. We'll see...
