I still don't know what my final plan will be, but lately I've been reading a bit about the ancient Pueblo People who lived in UT, CO, NM, and AZ and I've been picking out some of the many sites I wouldn't mind getting a chance to photograph pre or post shootout.
Here's my current list of places I would like to photograph. Most are Ancient Pueblo sites that I would like to camp at (ancient cliff dwelling with start trails), but there are some other places of interest too. I tried to include links where I could to more info about the location.
That is a lot of ideas!
I think I will see both Bandalier and Chaco Canyon in March on two different trips.
I let you know what I think and send you a link to the shots.

I'm looking forward to seeing those pics!
I've been reading this book "House of Rain: Tracking a Vanished Civilization Across the American Southwest" by Craig Childs. Its got me all excited about visiting all of the 1000+ year old ruines all over the Southwest. That's where 75% of my list of ideas came from.
I've actually taken the map and moved it to Google Maps so that I could download it into Google Earth. Then I can see other peoples ideas for things to photograph in the various areas I've marked so far. If your interested you can find that here.
Maybe it would be a good idea to start a larger colabrative dgrin 2008 pre/post-shootout google map that we could all add our ideas to.

Cool article- I am definetly more for Chaco than the Mesa. I like being someplace and not seeing anyone else.
I am scratching Zuni Pueblo from my trip with my son and heading here instead!! Just heard from a co-worker that it is very impressive. Self guided tours- remote area- right up my alley.

I tried to get in on the shoot but arrived too late. I'm sort of a semi-local to the area and will probably be down that weekend even if I can't get into the shoot (looks extremely slim).
I'll keep an eye on this thread and let me know if you need any info on the area and maybe I can tag along on a post shoot hike or bike or river run or climb or .... you get the picture, lots to do down there.
My Preferred Trip: Leave Phoenix Saturday Oct 4th - Return Sunday Oct 12
Phoenix- 1 day in Sedona- 1 day at Petrified Forest & Panited Desert- 1 day at Canyon De Chelly- Moab- Then hit the Goosenecks and Monument Valley when leaving Moab or instead of Sedona.
Ooo, ooo, don't forget Natural Bridges National Monument, or Grand Gulch, both near the Goosenecks, both incredible places
This landmark formation is so popular the sandstone at the base has been caressed to a polish.
Photographer's from around the world are pulled to this location not to show their skill, but to show homage.
You are drawn into it, hardly a word is spoken.
Southwest Photography Guide Books
Can anyone say anything good or bad about Laurent Martrès series of books "Photographing the Southwest"?
Our pre-shootout group has decided to start activities in Sedona and work our way North, so I would welcome any advice about the Laurent Martrès books or any other photography guides covering that area.

When you go on a trip with Adam, he issues' you a book to read, then quizzes you on it later.:D
Adam sounds like my kind of travel companion - just ask Christina and Nick what I had set up for the two of them on our preshootout drive last fall ---> a big bag of guide books, maps and critter ID stuff!! No just sitting back and acting the tourist!!
Nightingale and I have begun to make tentative plans for the shootout in October.
We will leave Indiana on or about Oct 1or 2, passing through Denver about 1 day later, and then heading towards Escalante, and the Devil's garden, and other areas of interest in southern Utah. We will work our way easterly from Escalante and end up in Moab on October 8.
Landscapes and Wildlife will be our primary interests. We will shoot any rock art that is not in motion!
We look forward to seeing old friends and making new ones. If you will be in these areas, let us know, and we will try to get together if at all possible.
Adam sounds like my kind of travel companion - just ask Christina and Nick what I had set up for the two of them on our preshootout drive last fall ---> a big bag of guide books, maps and critter ID stuff!! No just sitting back and acting the tourist!!
The only place that we have set in stone is to be in Albuquerque for the balloon festival.
We'll get there sometime on saturday the 4th, shoot the twinkle twinkle glow that night,
then get up early the next day for the Mass Ascension.
Other than that, my dear sweet wife hasn't informed as to where we are going.
I see the Wild Utah bunch went to Goblin Valley last year. It looks very cool.
Googling shows it's a pretty small area with sunrise & sunset potential. The slot canyon nearby seems a good way to spend some daylight hours. I'd like to check this place out. Figure maybe 1 day?? Looks to be about 120 miles from Moab, sorta on the other side of Canyonlands.
You need to have the sun high when in a slot canyon for light shafts, so usually you want to be there between 10 am and 2 pm at the outside, and closer to noon is better.
As you can see from my picture, the entrance is wide open, but as you walk up into the San Rafael Swell, the canyon gets very narrow. Barely wide enough for your feet at times. So you can shoot at Goblin early and late, and do Wild Horse during the day. Bring lots of water, if you come during the summer, it is hot here. By October, it should be more moderate.
Has anyone been to the Wave and from a distance and time stand point would that be something that could be considered?
The Wave is way south of Moab, but an incredible site to see if you can fit it in. You will need permits to hike it as they are trying to preserve it, and most permits are gone pretty quick, and October is prime season, but you may be able to score a mid week one. I don't have the info on how to get permits but I believe it is run by the BLM. You should DEFINATELY check it out if you are coming from down south.
I am new to DG, but I wanted to see if this pre-shoot trip is full or are there still slot open to join?
The other question is are those dates (Oct.4-12) confirmed?
Has anyone been to the Wave and from a distance and time stand point would that be something that could be considered?
Thanks,
Jung
Wave is sold out for permits to buy in advance. Only possible way to see it for the dates in October is to be at the office when it opens and try to get a permit for the following day.
I could not get advance permits- whole month of October sold out in 6 minutes - and my pre-shootout plans put my group in Page on the weekend so no chance to wait for permits either. :cry
"The Journey of life is as much in oneself as the roads one travels"
...
I could not get advance permits- whole month of October sold out in 6 minutes ...
I guess that kind of tells you something about the place. Seriously, this place is EXTREMELY popular with photographers, and October is the pinnacle of the prime season, so don't be too sad, their will be lots of photographers down there, just not us. If it make you feel any better, I have been living here for 25 years and I haven't been there yet. I've always wanted to go but ended up somewhere else....Of which there are PLENTY of other places, maybe not as extreme but certainly incredible by themselves.
Those that wanted to do the Goblin Valley area should check out Tom Jone's canyoneering site. There are good leads for the area if you are looking for slot canyons. Try http://www.canyoneeringusa.com/utah/swell/
for the area around Goblin Valley. You should read the ratings section, a 1A is a hikable, dry canyon, 2 or 3 is technical rapelling involved, B is wet, usually requiring wetsuits (oh yeah really, those slot canyon pools are freezing cold even in the desert).
There is a guy, Shane, who also has a good site with lots of info http://climb-utah.com/index.htm
The problem with his site is that he wants you to register ($$$) to get directions. If you see something you like though it is usually easy to Gooogle and get the info.
Or, you can ask here and I'll point you right....ORRRR BETTER, get me to the top of the alternate list and I will personally guide you to these killer locations
I would love to hear what everyone has planned for their pre-shootouts (now that everyone's schedule should be figured out).
Here's the pre-shootout plans for Skippy, April, and me...
Saturday Oct 4, arrive in Flagstaff, AZ and head to Sedona, AZ
Sunday Oct 5, sunrise shots in Sedona from a hotair balloon
Monday Oct 6, sunrise shots in Sedona from ground level, then head up to South rim of Grand Canyon
Tuesday Oct 7, more Grand Canyon
Wednesday Oct 8, head up to Moab.
