I would love to hear what everyone has planned for their pre-shootouts (now that everyone's schedule should be figured out).

Here's the pre-shootout plans for Skippy, April, and me...

Saturday Oct 4, arrive in Flagstaff, AZ and head to Sedona, AZ
Sunday Oct 5, sunrise shots in Sedona from a hotair balloon
Monday Oct 6, sunrise shots in Sedona from ground level, then head up to South rim of Grand Canyon
Tuesday Oct 7, more Grand Canyon
Wednesday Oct 8, head up to Moab.

Maybe we'll cross paths with some of you.

I'm sorry that I'll miss you guys on the pre-shootout, I'm flying into Vegas on the 7th. I'll be crusing around Vegas the week following (heading home on the 17th) if you guys will still be in the area.

Have a great time in Arizona!!!

well, that's the general route we are taking and will be passing those locations on the way. At this point, we don't know if we will make them all or how long we'll get at each place...but we'll give it a good shot :D

Definitely more photo ops, but it can't beat sitting on a train for 24 hours drinking beer :D

Staying in Beatty but not shooting Rhyolite?

By the way, you will be driving past my house once you hit Vegas. And you will know when you get here--the northwest valley along the 95 hwy goes from barren desert to tract homes in the blick of an eye.

Hmmm, figured out? Well, er ...kinda
Oct 2 - Leaving Chicagoland for parts west
Oct 3 - Arriving Ft Collins or Denver area depending on route taken
    - maybe look for some fall color. (aspens??)
Oct 4 - sidetrip stop in Grand Juction/Fruita - arrive Moab PM
    Oct 5-8
Thinking of a day trip south toward Natural Bridges
Thinking of a trip (maybe overnight) to Goblin Valley & LWHC
I'll probably hang near Moab for a day or two

I've got a bedroom floor partially obscured with guide books, maps & printouts. The internet is a wonderful thing except when it presents too many options. I'm not going to 'wing' this trip, but I figured to leave the a few days a bit squishy so I can pick what looks to be the most fun.

I'm up for shooting just about anything living or not, moving or not (will RUN from moving dead things!).

If you'll be nearby give me a shout. I'll be driving a Silver Honda Pilot w/ IL plates.

I told Kate, "Let's just play it by ear this trip."
    She says "Ok."

Then I get this email. (that she also sent to Grimace cause we will be meeting up with him along the way)

    I thought I was going on vacation.:D

    The Email:

This is what I have as a tentative pre-shoot itinerary for D+K.
Things will change as we go, but basically follow this plan.
    Flexibility is key.

The things listed between Santa Fe and Monument Valley
I particularly want to be sure to hit. That would be the ruins
    and glyphs near them.

There are some interesting shots on some websites of night
ruins, with the time lapse star trails and also with backlit
canyon walls behind them, or with lit ruins.
If you have a 1,000,000 candle power light bring it. I hope to
find one. Don't forget the flashlights, walkie talkies, and
compasses (where's north star?) boys and girls!

Adam, I have photocopies of Scenic Driving Utah for you.
Has all the best routes (that's rooots in Ann-speak!).

Well you are in luck. I know where you can find one every night in Moab.

There is an outfit called Canyonlands By Night which will take you up the river from Moab after dusk and then float down back. While they float they have a truck with a HUGE light follow along the river road and illuminate the canyon walls on and off. Sounds funky but it is actually quite cool, and a whole lot less wear and tear on the canyons than those d*&%mn 4x4s and ORVs.

They start at about Negro Bill Canyon and follow the boat down to the bridge in town. I've always wondered what kind of time exposed shot I could take posed on top of the cliff just below Shrimp Rock on the Slickrock Trail looking upriver as the light truck came slowly down. Talk to Canyonlands by Night to get their schedule, and scout the setup areas before. I can think of very few areas that are high enough for the shot and are climbable with gear, I'm betting you'll have to get on the Slickrock Trail for a good perspective.

    Any takers?

By the by, what is the moon like at that time? Another killer night shot with moon might be from Shrimp Rock toward the LaSals (kill two birds with one setting). Follow that with a moonlit mountain bike back to the car and you'd have an evening to talk about (been there, done that, bring your helmet!).

Or maybe an upriver shot from the top of the Golden Staircase looking toward Fisher Towers (the trail starts at Red Cliffs Lodge, but beware, it is tough, and hard to find... might be good to have a local on board ;-) ).

Get some sleep on that flight Skippy, after you get here you know sleep will be hard to come by.

The Dave and Kate show hits the road today also. We'll see you folks soon.

actually, I have always found that the quickest way to get over jetlag on the long flights from Australia, is to watch like 5 movies and get around 2-3 hours sleep. :D

Okay...the post shootout fuzziness should be clearing. Lets hear some feedback here...ideas for improvements, what worked, what didn't. Have your say to help the shootouts evolve from the quiet get together of 20 (Shootout #1) to the event of the year that they are now. This is your chance to make the best better!
