Ahhhh That New Camera Smell :) Canon 1Ds Mark III
As in the past, my good friends from Tallyn's Photographic didn't disappoint me :barb and my new Canon 1Ds Mark III arrived this morning :ivar
Oh yes, they packed up some nice Canon goodies in the box, too (I *love* that about Tallyn's)
:clap
The battery is charging, and I'll have more to say in a day or so.
I'll add my random thoughts here:
FILESIZES: RAW - 27Mb, In-camera JPG, least compression, highest quality: 11.5mb
WEIGHT, HANDLING: It's noticeably lighter than the 1Ds Mark II. The battery is less than half the weight of the old system. The camera, with E-1 handstrap, fits my hand like a glove. Feels awesome.
VIEWFINDER: HUGE! Bright, clear, extremely useful. A true joy. I'm used to full-frame, but this viewfinder is a step up from the 1Ds Mark II and 5D. The camera info is bright, clear, well laid out: metering mode, shutter speed, aperture, shots on card remaining, ISO, battery life, RAW/JPG, shots available in burst, and EC range scale.
MENU OPERATION: Easy, intuitive. A huge step up from the 1Ds Mark II. You don't need the manual, except for some of the newer functions. Navigation is easy to gr0k right off the bat. I will read the book on how to set "My Menu" so that only the stuff I really care about is shown to me. That's pretty cool. UPDATE: it's extremely cool, I really like having easy access to the few things I do most often. When I need any of the other 8 billion custom functions, I'll just use the menus
PERSONALIZATION: Very cool, you can use your own file-naming schema if you like. Like your initials, XYZ_0001.CR2 or really anything, they give you four characters to play with.
Stuff I Don't Like: First of all, Hello, Canon?? For $8 grand, why don't you include the E-1 handstrap in the box? I already had one, but plenty of buyers won't have one of these. Lame, lame, lame.

I just got my 40D ... you're a bit ahead of me on the curve .
........you seem to buy all the latest Canon toys, then they show up here in Andy-Bay (I mean DGrin Flea Market) ... so we should expect your new 1Ds MkIII to be on the Flea Market by when, the end of the year? :ivar
Supported by: Benro C-298 Flexpod tripod, MC96 monopod, Induro PHQ1 head
Also play with: studio strobes, umbrellas, softboxes, ...and a partridge in a pear tree...
Whoa!!! I thought that guy would never finish unpacking that box!!! I could never keep track of that many cables! Congrats, Andy, and of course, we are eagerly awaiting your first shots.
Sorry it took so long to reply ... I was out digging up my 'Shaft' 33 1/3 soundtrack LP from the garage:pimp
Wow! I have that same strap (from my 300D in some drawer), and it is a bolder more masculine body
Seriously, that is sweet. Separate ISO, better menus, that big display (especially next to the MkII).
Andy, not that I want you to go down to Jones Beach and dump a bunch of sand in there, but I would like your assessment of these self-cleaning sensor covers.

P.S. congrats!
Battery and most connectors are fully accessible. PC terminal, remote terminal, Video out, and the USB port, all good. If you want to connect the AC adapter, with this RRS plate, you're screwed (it's completely covered).
I'll give the boys in San Luis Obispo at RRS a shout about it.

I guess you cannot use the usb cord holder either? Is this a mkII or mkIII plate?
On the RRS site the mkIII bracket can move out an inch or so, would that solve those problems?
