On a modern college campus? yes. These days everything is on the computers, there's very little on pen and paper, even handouts in class are pdfs in many cases. Meeting with the team from econ 101 to work on the project at 3:30 in the cafeteria, better have the laptop to work on it. Meeting with your FA at 2:00 in their office and want to see what they think you should do about the note from the bursar's office? better have your laptop with your local mail on it. Meeting with Prof at 4:30 to talk about why he thinks your last paper was copied from someone else? be nice to have all your research notes, and all the urls you collected with information, and hey, the 15 drafts you saved of your paper as you edited it might be nice too. Oh hey, ran into that hottie from English at lunch and want to impress them, better luck with that funny video you found on Youtube the other day that's about the boring book you're supposed to be reading, who knows you might get their email. Or even need to check your social calendar to see if you're doing anything Sunday afternoon to meet them at the library to "study", you know, the funky green "reading" couch tucked under the stairs on the 3rd floor?
Yeah a laptop on a college campus is pretty much a requirement these days on a modern college campus.
