I'm interested to see some career-best basketball action shots. So, if you haven't already sold the rights to it, post it here!

I've been trying to take basketball pics for my son's friends in high school. Have to say I'm kind of glad the season is over because it's so hard to take pictures indoors. Here's one I like from my 2 months of basketball because it actually has some light and it's my son's friend. yay.

I have a 70-200/f2.8 on a D200 set at H0.7 for ISO, whatever that is, with noise filtering done later.

    wow, very nice shots guys...

    Question pls?

    without flash:
i tried my 50mm /1.8 set at f2 400 1600 iso and my pics detail comes out o.k. but I have this strong yellow tint that I can't seem to get rid of.
auto white balance is set, do I need to adjust manually?
For this type of shooting, do I have the right equipment for shooting b-ball of my daughter in low light middle schools gyms?

I tried to manually crank up the iso on my d200 to h1.0 but it just got grainier.

    thanks

With a D200, I wouldn't go above iso 1600. In most school gyms, I've found that f2 1/250 to 1/400 is possible. If you have an SB600 or SB800 flash, bounce it off the wall behind you or ceiling (preferably something white). Your yellow cast is likely due to WB. I have one gym that will always have green walls although the colors on the players are accurate. Sometimes you just can't get a WB ballance that works for both ends of the gym.

Auto WB on the D200 isn't as good as on the D300. You really need to set a custom WB. I reset this everytime I move as a lot of the gyms I'm in have what appear to be different brands of light bulbs in many of the overhead fixtures, changing the light in that area. You can use an expo disc, but if you're on a budget they can be pricey. There is a pretty good coffee filter technique (just google coffee filter and white balance) that I had pretty good success with before purchasing an expodisc. I've also seen a cheap chinese WB disc on ebay that may or may not work. For the price, it's probably worth trying.

Your image is underexposed by about 2 stops. There's a lot you can do in post to help. I simply used photoshop elements auto levels and shadow/highlights tool and made a huge improvement. The watermark makes it very difficult to see what's going on. I'd change it too.

Use of a free noise reduction software like Noiseware Community Edition will remove pretty much all the noise . I didn't use this in the attached image though.

I'll start (as I have a two-month career as of today):

Thanks! Somehow I missed this thread until just recently, I am honored it inspired a new thread of basketball bests :)

Anyhoo reposting my pic which prompted the thread. Great shots everyone's got in here.

Also I only started doing basketball in November of 2007 :)

Not sure if this is my absolute best, but I like the uniqueness of this one (sorry about the quality, but this was a newspaper shot back when I was using film, so I scanned the photo on a flatbed).

I don't think this is my career best (I don't have the patience to look through all of my pictures right now) but it's probably my favorite from last weekend.

This is JaJuan Smith, it always amazes me how high these guys can jump eek7.gif

And I hope everyone will be cheering on the Vols this weekend in Charlotte! thumb.gif
