Vanuatu kids need your old digital to learn photography

Guys i think the best thing to do is read this.

Basically some disadvantaged kids in Vanuatu want to learn photography & have a willing teacher but are hitting a bit of a wall with costs.

Ive chatted to Caroline via email & ive told her i know of a group of generous photographers that might well be able to help the kids out here.

Smugmug has jumped right in with a donation of pro account to assist the kids getting their photos out into the world :clap A huge thanks guys !

Im kicking it off by sending my first digital that i no longer use... a Kodak 2.1mp that really hooked me into the digital world and the rechargeables & charger. Im also dropping a few dollars for a small memory card to suit.

So thats 1 camera...do i hear a 2 down the back ???

Gus, this is awesome. My wife has a pile of old digital cameras, some work, some don't. I'll be going through and finding the ones that are worthy of sending on.

Thanks for the info, Gus! clap.gif

I have two Canon powershots that have been in a drawer, in their respective boxes, complete with accoutrements... with cracked LCDs. I have always felt bad about the delicate screen being the only thing wrong with these chumpies. Doubt that these count, though, eh? Since somehow I don't think screen repairs are on the list for this organization. ne_nau.gif

There's 150+ ppl in my company. I just sent out an email asking for donations, and I'm going to pay for shipping them all.

So far, one solid donation. rolleyes1.gif

Speaking of shipping what is the going rate from the US to New Zealand?

What types of cameras are they looking for P/S, SLRs, DSLRs, any/all of the above. I have an old Coolpix 800 and am trying to decide whether to let go of my old D30 and "Plastic Fantastic". Somebody did something like this on Fred Miranda a year or two back and it seemed to develop a life of it's own. Anyway to get the gear to a central location and box it all up and ship it around the world? Just thinking out loud as I have a lot of older stuff (EOS film cameras, REALLY old Mamiya Sekor 1000DTL) that I could be convince to part with if the logistics could be worked out.

    Just kinda rambling along thinking...

I'll donate my Pentax original Optio WP - plenty of water on that island for the kids to do some water shooting in!

Gus, did you send out your box yet? can we stuff ours in together?

    A huge thankyou to everyone.

They are looking for ANY digital not film as it would become cost prohibitive buying film & developing but with a digital...as we know...once you have the basics, its free.

Ive no idea of the rates from the US to NZ but a point & shoot really is quite light so i doubt it would be over $10 which i m sure could become a tax deduction as a gift to charity. Thats a lot you will be giving some island kids with your $10.

I have an Olympus 1 or 2 mp that works perfectly. Where does it get sent to? Or maybe I can send it over David's way and we can send one box from Thousand Oaks?

I think you guys may consider a staging area (SM HQ?) so you can just all send them there via domestic post/carrier and then a large box will go in one shot across the Pacific. just a thought...ne_nau.gif

Tks Nik but i am keeping this really really simple mate. If anyone has an old digital camera that the kids can have for their photography classes...please post it to the address listed above.

If that one box got lost then all the cameras from the USA would be lost.

SM already did a great deal by donating an account, now we're gonna make them be a shipper/receiver?

come on folks, its not that hard, put it in a box, go to the post office, you'll fill out a simple customs form (35 seconds to complete) and out it will go. gus is right on, $10-$20 maximum for a small box across the Pacific. keep it simple.

Gus, not everyone reads every new post every day. I'm on here quite a bit and I just saw this thread this morning.

I'll give it a once-over with SWMBO and see what I can uncover - I think I have a couple of small casios (w/ memory cards) that will fill the bill. More later today....

    Sony DSC-S75
I have a Sony DSC-S75, it works sometimes, sometimes cannot access memory stick. I used this camera a lot, but moved up to DSLR. Is it worth your while. It wasn't worth my getting it repaired, but then maybe you have access to those services at a reasonable cost.
I also have an Olympus Camedia.. don't know model number, but it doesn't work because it drains batteries.... immediately
and a Nikon Coolpix L3 with a broken screen. I also have odds and ends of memory cards, memory sticks. Nothing high capacity. 128mg for the mem sticks. some of the others 16 and 32mb.

Thankyou very much. Hell if it takes a photo it can go. When i dug my old one out it was broken also so ive got it in for repairs prior to sending it. If it wont revive then i will send the next inline.

Im sure they would love to see memory cards also. These guys have nothing. Im hoping to get there in a few weeks & get a few photos of them with the cameras.

Well, I don't have any old cameras at the moment, but once they have their site up and running I'd be glad to buy a few pictures to help the cause! Any ideas when that may happen?

    Update :

5 cameras received so far...i dont know how many are from d/grin (hopefully all). Thankyou to everyone participating.

Recon we can rescue another 10 from our 23,240 members computer desk draws ???

Lets face it guys...none of us are going to use them again.

Ive been invited to visit Wan Smolbag & see the community with our cameras in action when i get to Vanuatu in a few weeks time. I will be sure to get plenty of photos for d/grin & you can see your old point & shoots being put to great charity use.

......if i can keep off the kava for a day that is.

    Gus -
I have a Canon S40 that I haven't used in several years, just charged up a battery to make sure it still works, and it does. I'll send it off to Caroline next week.

And hey - thanks for suggesting this home for a camera that still has life in it and wants to be used!
