I was just messin with the raw files...it still isnt recognized.. so i checked one against one from the 30D and the only diff i found is:
if i click properties on one from the 30D its got three check boxes..
hidden, read only and archived, and the archived is checked..
when i look at the hacked one it only has hidden and read only and then its got and "Advanced" tab where "archived" should be, so i click "advanced" and theres like 4 choices and the only checked off one is... "This file is ready to be archived"
Hmmm so how do i archive it?

I don't think that the archive bit setting is the problem. Did you see the second part of my reply?
Short story: WAY easier to follow the PeeCee directions for the SD870. After trying numerous times, the hacker crap wasn't working for my model, cuz ps.fir wouldn't install on the sdcard. Hokay, so, I go to my VMware Windows box on my Mac, and in 6 mins had a bootable SD card and then got the CHDK loaded onto my SD Card and am now able to shoot RAW on my SD870 Infrared Conversion
Tomorrow I'll try it.. It's 11pm here now, no sunlight
ND Filter? Hmmmm could be nice!
I wanna figure out how to control the aperture more (I'd like to all-time force f/8 if I could, minimizing corner softies).

Such an adventure (and such an "adventurer". )
I wonder just how many folks have done both the IR conversion and the RAW hack?
I've been running CHDK on my ye olde Ixus 50 for a while now.
I like the raw abililties, highlight warnings, and scripting is cool. You can the thing to do motion detection among other things, a friend reported it's fast enough to pick up lightning (with FastMD script).
It doesn't do miracles though, my little ixus still doesn't have priority modes, nor have I found a way to make it display the shutter speed it's going to use - aperture, iso, and EV yes, but no shutter speed...
From that particular discussion you might conclude that there is only 1 aperture setting for the camera (sd870). They suggest that exposure is controlled using the electronic shutter and ISO (gain) and a physical ND filter with no variability of the aperture.
They are saying that the f/8 force and the ND filter are the same thing, I think.
Those little cameras have only two aperture settings, wide open and tiny (also called ND filter out/in).
You should be able to see the aperture move when you twiddle the setting Andy.
Where's that little camera of mine.. give this a test...
Edit: Yup, it's the aperture allright, I get f/2.8 with filter out f/6 filter in. This is from an Ixus 50 point of view.
While I haven't found a definitive answer yet, it appears to be fairly common knowledge that the SD800 and the SD860/SD870 models "do not" have a diaphragm but use an ND filter to "simulate" the effect of aperture.
Andy, the KAP group seems to think that the StereoData Maker version (SDM) of CHDK allows more control and that the developer is more informed, so you might try some questions in their group:
Can I buy something that will do the job? I'm not electrically inclined ....

So, this is Canon SD 870 IS Infrared Modded, 5 shots, shot in RAW, converted in ACR, processes as 16bit in PS, just a photo merge and some curves, little bit of sharpening and holy schmoly

You might not be able to get exactly 30mm, but looking at these scripting samples it should be rather easy to put together something that sets to zoom to one step off the widest and takes a shot.
In fact, it's as easy as:
rem CHDK Build 122 or later required
@title Set Zoom and Shoot
@param a Zoom step to set
@default a 1
@param b Max step
@default b 6
if b<1 then b=1
if a>b then a=b-1
get_zoom r
print "Zoom is at step: " r
print "Setting zoom to: " a
print "Max step: " b
set_zoom a
shoot
end
The widest step is always 0 apparently, so one step off that is 1.
This is tested on and set for an Ixus 50, which has 7 zoom steps ( 0-6 ).
You can find the maximum zoom step for your camera by zooming in all the way and running the script and reading what the script says the step is.
I've tried setting the zoom past the max and it just goes to fully zoomed in and takes the shot at that step - it should not therefore hurt the camera, if you get the setting wrong.

I used a card reader.. the problem is that none of my programs recognize the file...but it is a raw file... what are others using to open them?

* in-camera ND filter
* long shutter (up to 65 seconds!)
* raw
* f/8 force
I will use an RRS plate and tripod mount the IR SD870, so I'll need a remote release

From the camera's documentation it has:
f2.8 to f8.0 (wide) / f5.8 to f16.4 (tele)
That would seem to imply a diaphram of some sort.
I am investigating.

I just looked in my bag to see what P&S I have and voila! it is an SD870.
Where are the mod instructions for IR? This is a client supplied camera so I can't really take it apart :-)
Maybe I'll go buy one for myself. It's a nice little pocket camera, but I want to read more about the IR mod.
Cheers,
David
