Egret in Flight
Sony alpha a100, 4.5-5.6/75-300 kit lens. f/10.0, ISO 100, focal length 300.0 mm.
I haven't discovered the secret of being able to quickly focus on birds in flight yet. I kind of liked this one even though it's not perfect. I did some post - darkened the background, blurred the background, masked the bird, adjusted some hue/saturation, put the sharper (ha!) bird on the blurred background, repeated the bird layer, flattened the image, unsharp mask. I consider this an artistic version of an egret in flight, :-)

Learning to Fly
So I am not a BIF guy, I love seeing these types of photos, just not a fan of taking them. We have hundreds of geese around where I live and I noticed they had babies...The wife wanted photos, so I took some...This little guy was trying to hard to fly, he would jump off the curb and flap his little wings. I have know idea if a "BLF - Bird Learning to Fly" counts, but I figured I would throw it in here and see what happens.
Favs update...
Come on, guys, get with the C&C And I wanna VOTE on the goodies in this comp, Dave, and see some BPDigitals awarded

Appealing composition. Gives the sensation of soaring. Great capture of head turn.
The Curious Camel
An unusual, fresh BIF. Love it, especially the low flight you capture with the grass in the foreground, and the colors. Superb photography!
Very pretty. Once again superb photography!
BPerron
What an hilarious pic! It captures what we love about Disney cartoons. Love the minimalism of it, the geometry & colors. Great photography. I would like to see the bird a little sharper and brighter, especially the head and foot, and a little catchlight in the eye.
For the first shot at this (mini challenge) , you folks are doing great.
Seeing as I'm the judge, it wouldn't be right for me to comment on anyone's photo.
When this is over, I'll do a top five.
NeilL, sorry, but the way this is set up, if you want to be a judge, you need to win.
When Andy and the good Doctor get the regular challenges up and running, you'll get your chance to vote.:D
This one was in a little pond next to a path me and a friend of mine walked by, so we thought we'd take a few pictures. We noticed the duck heard our ultrasonic focusing motors clearly and didn't like 'em either. So it decided that the best place to listen to our whining was somewhere else and took off in my general direction, just as I hit the shutter.
This led to a rather dramatic change in plans for the mallard!
That would be just over half a second's worth of time there
(exifish info per request: 85/1.8 on a Canon 20D set to continous firing and AI servo, to annoy the bird obviously...)

Be lateral, Dave The world is big enough for this and whatever else (people seem happy with this, tho) I don't only want to judge, tho that is not likely to happen, I want to vote!
Now, give me one good reason why I can't You seemed so friendly
Some from Finland ( and Greece )
There are too good posts and examples here in this threat, that I was wondering if I can add anything... But what in h***, here we go...
Collared dove from Crete
and a buzzard from the same island
and some swans from Finland - migration time here now

Thanks Neil...I was just snapping photos for the wife, and was at the long end of my lens, I agree a little sharper would be great. I do not shoot much wild life, so I am very new to it, so this is what you get, I just thought it fit the theme...
My photo does not even stand up to the other amazing photos in this thread, but thanks for the C&C.

Which is exactly what I did shortly after this shot. Animals are smart, these guys knew I was trying to take their photos and hightailed it off the river!:D I am rather envious of the shots of rapters that have been submitted....they are awesome and my little camer just can't do quite that much. Thx for bringing back the old style challenges! Dizzy

I really love that first shot. The detail is superb. The eagle just seems to jump out at you. Wonderful job at capturing him.
