Well, Andy, now that I have de-lurked I *must* participate. I've seen these shots of you a long time ago, and I'm still impressed thumb.gif !

Here a shot of how churches are restored in Belgium rolleyes1.gif It is the Gothic church of the "Grote Zavel" at the Sablon in Brussels. This is a beautiful but expensive quarter with a lot of antique shops. The best chocolatier of Belgium can be find there (yes Andy, I think you might like Belgium, :eat -wise).

The church is from the 14th Century. I bumped the saturation to bring out the colors on the canvas, which were very pale. It was very hard to get a good angle with my 28-105 lens on a Canon300D.

    WOW! Ed.
We must have had the same idea, same time........almost looks like same pic! Not many people take the time to go back in that field behind the chapel! It (like the rest of Yosemite) is full of pictures in it's own right.

    Lovely picture!

Heres a church in Wyck (Maastricht in The Netherlands), which is one of the many churches in this city that provide a beautiful skyline when you enter Maastricht from the surrounding hills. This time it's taken from the opposite of the river which divides Maastricht (the Maas):

    13587106-M.jpg

Another one is a fortified church in the Land of Herve in Belgium. The village is this church, and a few supporting houses. The fortification is a memory of a time when churches were so much more than just places of worship.

That a place of worship doesn't always have to built of stone shows this crucifix in the Italian alps:

Gosh, you forced me to stop lurking and post a photo. This is painful. Actually, I have posted many photos of my church, memorable probably only to me. It is on an island off of Charleston, SC. The church dates back to the 1800s.

I like this photo because it is so not posed. I was taking photos up in the choir loft that Father McInerny had asked me to take. He stayed in the church doing chores and whatever. I just leaned over the rail and took this shot. He is actually a Monsignor, but he is also an island boy who grew up going to that same church and is now the pastor........and a Monsignor.

Here he is just a priest taking care of his church. This was taken with a Canon Digital Elph S230, before I had ever even heard of the Rebel and gotten the 20D and L lens fever. ginger

This is a recent picture of an altar boy. It was his first time.

My contribution. In both churches I sing as a tenor in the choir, which is BTW the only reason I'm there to be honest.:):

Behind the apse of the basilica is the side chapel which Antonio Gaudi helped design. Inside is the wood carved statue known as the "Black Madonna."

There are some great shots in this thread, and these don't compete photographically, but they are unique.

    1. Chiloe Island, off the coast of Chile, shot through the car window on a rainy day. Note the wooden shingles on all surfaces, characteristic of this area.
    15769333-L.jpg

    2. Siena, Tuscany, Italy. Needed a better camera with a fisheye lens, but this is all I had.

    16730899-L.jpg

    3. And finally, Greene Memorial, Roanoke, Virginia, taken just yesterday:

Thank you Angelo. St Francisco de Asis has to be one of the most photographed churches in the southwest, but I find myself drawn to it, everytime I return to Taos.

I found these two image of yours to be very powerful. I wonder if B&W would be even more stark and dramatic?

Church of Guadalupe in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Not where I live, but one of my most interesting church shots. The intricate filigree crown is one of only two of it's kind in the world. This tower is a landmark in Puerto Vallarta and an icon for the city.

OK, here's my all time best place of worship shots:

    2788366-O.jpg

    Congregational Church, Nantucket, MA

    5301883-L.jpg

    First Unitarian Society, Newton, MA

I actually go to church here sometimes. I'm a confirmed atheist and a devout Unitarian, which is actually not a contradiction. Our minister describes himself as a "nontheiest". I asked him the obvious question and he said it made fewer people upset. Before he was a Unitarian minister, he was a Zen monk. Cool, eh?

There is a very beautiful Unitarian church on Nantucket, but I haven't managed to get the shot I want of it yet.
    If not now, when?
