You took the words right out of my mouth Scott!!! If #1 were more technically good (focus, lighting), it would be my pick because of the interesting angle and context of the horse's mane. The baby blanket really distracts. #2 is much better technically, but no context. I don't know why she is looking out of the photo and what she is looking at. It's kind of strange to see a photo of a girl and not be sure why she is wearing a helmet...what sport does she participate in??? For some it's obvious, but not for all.
Thanks every one! Sorry about those 239 who will be itching, and scratching.
The photos weren't posed. I was at a small horse show, and when I first saw her she was wrapped up in the blanket on top of the horse waiting for her turn in the riding ring.
When she heard the camera shutter she looked up to see what made the noise, and that's when that first photo was taken.
I did find the juxtaposition of a beautiful young lady with a siren look staring out from under a baby blanket at odds yet interesting.
Pilling on is ok. I see your points. Yes they are a little soft, i'm not sure why. Everything from Saturday seems a little soft? As to the helmet, and context after the fact it makes sense.

The first one has more of a story : the horse, the blanket the colours, the look on her face.
Personally, I love sharpness and high contrast so I like the second one. Simple, white, high contrast and sharper.
I knew, of course, that trees and plants had roots, stems, bark, branches and foliage that reached up toward the light. But I was coming to realize that the real magician was light itself.

I really want to thank everyone who took the time to respond. It lets me know what others are seeing. I can only know what I see. Even then I am not always sure of what I know, sww, or think I know.
need to remember what you're selling
If you're selling the helmet the second one is a great product shot. if it's an interesting portrait you want then the first shot wins hands down.
I like seing the horse as part of the picture in the first one but she almost looks anoyed at having her picture taken in the first.
I like her expression better in the second but preferred the composition in the first.
So if I had to choose I would say #2
If you look and don't vote you will itch all night in strange places. You have been warned.
I like #1 for so many reasons and I like it better then #2 but the rubber ducky blanket just throws me for such a loop I feel it is to far out of context for this shot.

Not to pile on, but exactly my read as well.

Here is how I first saw her.

So #2
#2 - is just looks overexposed rather than processed to give a certain "look and feel"
What about a little more sharpness in the eyes in #1 too?

Don't like the blanket on #1, although horsy adds context.
- We have the horse for context
- We have the blanket - and the way it's wrapped up, we know it's cold out.
- Do I see snow?
- The helmet lets us know that we have a person under the blanket
The only down-side on this image is the lack of a face, but I really don't think her face is needed to tell the story. My Photos

I definitely like the first one best.
Thanks!!!

Any possibility of cloning the horse from #1 into #2? That would give context, get rid of the blanket and let you use the sharper one.
If I have to choose, though, I vote for #1.
Sweet captures, btw.

The expressive face is more compelling than the high key exposure (which is really cool though) in #2.
