In the new challenge format, we now have a week between shooting rounds to critique and discuss the photos, the topic, the weather... Ok, maybe not so much the weather, but the point is: this is a community driven thread! It's up to you all to use this week "off" constructively.
As soon as the judges make their decisions, I will submit their critique in this thread, and post the voting poll at the same time.
The challenge theme was: Geometric or Fluid
Your judges were:

#2 - fashiznitsngrins - Pooh Bears Shopping List
I like the aspect of this photo. The blob of honey, off centered, gives definition to the meaning. I really like looking at this – it’d be a print I’d like on my wall. Very good imagination and well composed.
#13 - shatch - Occasional Downpour
The colors are outstanding with the black background. I like how the water stands out and isn’t blurry. I would like to have seen a more pleasant look on her face as the overall picture seems a happy one.
#17 - redkulas - We built this city
Love, love, love this photo! The light streaming in on the big, bulky, rusted machinery gives it a soft touch. I appreciate your post processing – it really adds to the overall composite. Nice angle and very technical.
#24 - urbanaries - Gangsta groomsmen
Yo, Dood! This picture gives me a good feeling. The clouds, angle, poses and building all add to the festiveness of this photo. Creative, fun and great – looks like an album cover of one I might buy.
#30 - Nikolai -To each is own
I’d just like to say; Wow! Fits the theme perfectly, very nice composition and wonderful colors. I like the softness of the subject versus the roughness of the rocks. I really like the geometric pattern you’ve added.
#32 - jrnylst - Tranquility
A very beautiful photo. I like the lines that the geese/ducks make and the velvety texture of the water. No need for a sepia tone – this photo stands out with its own natural beauty.
#34 – pyroPrints.com - Fractals in nature
Awesome, awesome, awesome!! Gorgeous lighting with great colors – I feel like I could reach out and touch it. I would have liked to see some sand in there.
#37 – The Curious Camel - My world – Encapsulated
This is just absolutely fantastic! I can’t imagine how you managed to get this perfect bubble in the frame with the beautiful reflection within. The soft background really enhances the crispness of it. I really like that I can make out the houses, sky and clouds. Outstanding effort!
#47 - WildWally - The “MONOLITH” to the moon
I like seeing the half moon against an inky black sky – I also like that the photo is very clear, the moon surface is very visible, and the geometric shapes – makes the entire photo stand out. What is the structure in the picture?
#57 - Jet - Shimmering spillage
Absolutely fantastic composition! I think it’s cropped perfectly and blue of the bottle looks very nice against the surface it’s laying on. It’s a simple image, but I’ve found myself finding little treasures in it; the water droplets on the bottle, the tiny little drip on its spout. I like the old fashion with it’s unique topper. The water on the ground looks a bit like mercury – it seems to clash a bit with the overall picture.

This round was really tough to judge! You guys did AWESOME! Please realize that I do not look at supporting notes when I am judging. If the image by itself does not speak the theme, then it's not likely to score highly for me. Super work everyone...keep it up!
#2 – fashiznitsngrins – Pooh Bear’s Shopping List
Very well done! Fantastic idea and execution.
:bow
#5 – bfjr – Got Ya
Love it!
:lust
#11 – Povertybarn – Powered by Caffeine
Great interpretation of both themes. Kind of mesmerizing!
:clap
#16 – pemmett – Wet Wet Wet
Very clever. Definitely fits the theme. Well done.:nod
#21 – puzzledpaul – Exit from a rippled reality
I love the composition of this. Would like to see a touch more pop, but otherwise a very cool image that you want to linger on.
:clap
#22 – jeffmyers – Cenotaph
A strong image. I keep wishing for the left column of circles to be a touch lighter, but still, really nice.:D
#26 – raptorcaptor – Twisted Flight
Fantastic capture. The combination of the water droplets and the fluid wave shape to the wings make this shot.
:lust
#30 – Nikolai – To each is own
I'm not normally a fan of line/text additions to photos, but this totally works. Without the lines the image would mean little to me, but for fitting this theme…very, very clever.
:bow
#37 – The Curious Camel - My world…encapsulated
I like your interpretation with this nice, soft image. Definitely makes you want to linger and seek details within the sphere.
:lust
#56 – Halite – OOBLECK!
Such a fun, creative shot. I wish her eye was not obstructed, but never-the-less, very well done. I certainly hope you cleaned up the book before returning it to the library!!!:rofl

My top ten favorites in no particular order are:
I must admit after seeing "Pooh Bear's Shopping List" I nearly didn't enter - it's such a brilliantly executed shot.
One of the differences for me between this year's competition and LPS is the the theme's seem to have no obvious relationship. In LPS the theme was almost always opposites, so this year looks like it's going to be a real mind and imagination stretching exercise for me.
Good look everyone.

Thank you...
Peace always, gail
Ps...yes good luck to everyone.
There were some other good ones, and not so good ones. If anyone wants a critique, I'll gladly give one, drop me a PM.
pyroPrints.com/5819572 The Photo Section
Thanks Pyro and Pemmett.
Here's my top ten (in order of entry):
#11 - Povertybarn: Powered by Caffeine
This is the type of shot that I find pleasing. Simple, clean, good color and definitely says geometric.
#13 - Shatch: Occassional Downpour
The front raindrops that are oof bother me some but I am still a sucker for a good studio shot.
#16 - Pemmett: Wet, Wet, Wet
This has almost too many drops (especially the tiny ones) for my liking, but it's simplicity held my interest.
#17 - Redkulas: We Built This City
Love the light coming through the roof and the processing. Everywhere I look I see geometry.
#21 - Puzzledpaul: Exit from a Rippled Reality
This one was probably my favorite (I have a real hard time picking a very favorite anything). Love the title, the English"ness" to it and of course, the geometry.
#30 - Nikolai: To Each His Own
I don't usually like photos that have added text or lines as in this case. However, I really like the photo and found myself staring at it for quite some time looking at all of the implied angles.
#32 - Jrnylst: Tranquility -
There were several very good bird shots in this round, and although they all contained water, this one really says "fluid" to me.
#37 - The Curious Camel: My World Encapsulated
Again, very simple, yet pleasing - and definitely says geometric.
#45 - Rockporters: After the rain
This one doesn't scream fluid, as much as it does say "plant", but I LOVE it. Sorry to be so simplistic - but it's what catches my eye every time!
#46 - Peterst6906: Lightning In A Clear Blue Sky
Clean, clear, bright, colorful, angular - what more can I say?
(I had trouble accessing your photo in the thread and on your website for some reason so I had to use your EXIF thumb - sorry!)
Honorable Mentions - Sunset Sailor's Pale Companion
This one would have been my #1 favorite if it weren't for the moon. Sorry, but I can't get past it. It's too obvious that it wasn't there when the photo was taken and the photo was definitely strong enough that it didn't even need to be there. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but it's feedback that I would want if it were mine...
Raptorcaptor's Twisted Flight
What an awesome shot!! The only thing was that for me it just didn't quite meet the theme.
I hope that I have not offended anyone and if I have, take no notice of me! I am learning to become thicker skinned through this process and really try to see what the person giving the critique was trying to tell me. Peace out -
and
the VOTING poll is live.

Thx to all who've expressed interest in it ... and best of luck to all the finalists.
This very nearly didn't happen at all, btw...
Just loaned / delivered my first dslr (D30) to some friends who work in the local city centre as I no longer use it.
Noticed the quality of reflections on a partic building and that the frames were quite thin ... so, quickly returned for the D30 and took some pics, before the sun moved round (narrow st. + tallish bldgs = rapid changes)
Fortunately, the lady didn't give a damn about me (most stopped / waited when saw me with cam) ... so carried on regardless ... and was just the right height ...
All as seen by the camera (apart from usual) ... no pshopping.
Thx to judges - a difficult job and much appreciated.

Peace always, gail
#16 - Wet Wet Wet. Good stuff! Very creative.
#17 - We Built This City. Great subject matter. Nicely captured rays of light. Love the PP.
#21 - Exit from a Rippled Reality. Love how you framed this one and made use of the warped shape of the glass.
#24 - Gangsta Groomsmen. Love the PP and the composition. All that's missing is a movie/book title. I don't quite get the connection to Fluid or Geometric, though.
#30 - To each his own. Love it and your sense of humor.
#34 - Fractals in Nature. Well planned and thought out in terms of the theme.
#35 - Patience, Balance, and Inspiration Pay Off. What a fun shot!
#37 - My world...encapsulated. Holy cow!
#46 - Lightning in a Clear Blue Sky. Can't get any bolder or more geometric than that.
#54 - Currents. Just doesn't get more peaceful than that. Love the texture of the water.
#56 - OOLBECK. Very cute. The background is distracting to me but the look on the little girls face, the green goo all over her fingers and table coupled with the book make for a clever and well thought out composition.

I too at first thought, well those are strange themes - they don't really contrast at all. I in fact had in my head "geometry" and "liquid" as I pondered shots. It seems from some others' comments and photos I wasn't the only one.
Just recently I looked at the theme again: Geometric or Fluid
Ahhhh!!! This is more a description of the lines of a composition, and in that sense very contrasting. e.g. the letter S is fluid, the letter K is geometric.
Well, the themes are what folks interpret them to be, but I (perhaps wrongly) think the vast majority of us completely missed the boat on what was intended.
With that in mind I've got to say Nikolai has hit the contrasting themes perfectly. He at least "got it". Looking through the entries and even the judges selections it sure seems to me most of the rest of us didn't, and as a result missed an opportunity to really explore with this particular theme.
In any case, regardless of the interpretation this produced a lot of nice photos even if they seem very disjoint to me...
Ken
I agree. I think a lot of people thought liquid as well.
I think it's a legitimate assumption. Most of these themes could be considered from multiple angles. That's the beauty of it!

#3 – Tentacion – Ripple Effect<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
Fantastic colors and definitely says fluid. Just missed my top ten by a hair.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#4 – Buildit – Winter water fall<o:p></o:p>
Defintely fits the theme. A more interesting sky may have pushed this image further.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#6 – Ulrich – Common Ratio<o:p></o:p>
LOVE this image, just not feeling a strong tie to the theme. <o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#7 – Rhinotherunt - My go at it. I see lots of triangles.<o:p></o:p>
A very textured shot with lots of lovely coloration. "Geometric" is not the primary theme here, but it's still a nice shot.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#8 – WomanWithACamera – Stormy Weather<o:p></o:p>
Awesome clouds, just a stretch on the theme.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#9 – jeffreaux2 – Halls of Wisdom<o:p></o:p>
What a fantastic, fun shot. The white pants and bright pink nail polish is a bit distracting for me, as is the shadow, but this is still a great shot.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#10 – <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:place>Douglas</st1:place> – Tubular<o:p></o:p>
Neat interpretation, great background.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#12 – NikonsandVstroms – Reclamation<o:p></o:p>
Great textures here and nice light, just not as strong on theme as some of the others.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#13 – shatch – Occasional Downpour<o:p></o:p>
The expression here makes this image very intriguing, however, the studio umbrella forces it to lose authenticity.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#14 – cmorganphotography – Fluid and shape<o:p></o:p>
I like this image a lot compositionally, but find I'm drawn more to the rock than the water, and it loses it's strength on the theme for me as such.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#15 – vandana – The falls<o:p></o:p>
Beautiful shot and great rainbow. The blown highlight in the middle is distracting, which is a real shame.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#17 – redklaus – We Built This City<o:p></o:p>
While there are many geometric shapes here and I love the post processing choices, I am having difficulty finding a focal point. Great job, anyway!<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#18 – Art Scott – Frustration<o:p></o:p>
It took me a few seconds, but I did finally figure out what I was looking at! A cool visual puzzle.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#19 – ifocus – Linked<o:p></o:p>
Really nice image. The theme isn't very strong for me here, however.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#20 – dcorrin – seeing fluid (at least) 3 ways<o:p></o:p>
I'm not seeing fluid or geometric here. Sorry. <o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#23 – mycaptures – Smooth Ride<o:p></o:p>
This image definitely says motion to me more than fluid. It has a bit of an awkward crop and the girl's clothes disappear into the background.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#24 – urbanaries – gangsta groomsmen<o:p></o:p>
A really great shot. Very dynamic and fun, just not sure where the theme is.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#25 – eL eSs Vee – Fluid Geometry<o:p></o:p>
Great lines and I love the simplicity. Just missed my top ten. <o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#27 – quark - Polymer Optic Petals<o:p></o:p>
I love the color and shapes in this. Nicely lit too, just missing something for me that I can't quite pinpoint.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#28 – cbsnet – Rebuilding<o:p></o:p>
While this is a tremendous story-telling image, I'm having trouble finding a real focal point.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#29 – papaw – Brazos Bend slough<o:p></o:p>
A very interesting subject, but the most interesting area is in shade. A more abstract crop would make a cool image.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#31 – DJT – Birdman Mask<o:p></o:p>
Nice geometric shapes. The light is a little unappealing. An abstract crop on this could make a much stronger image.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#32 – jrnylst – Tranquility<o:p></o:p>
Gorgeous liquid gold. Wish there was a little more space in front of the geese. Very nice though. Real close to my top ten. <o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#33 – evoryware – Ebb and flow<o:p></o:p>
Lots of angles here and some "Fluid" too. I do so wish the top of the ship was there.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#34 – pyroPrints – Fractals in Nature<o:p></o:p>
Very nice color and composition. Also just shy of my top ten.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#35 – hawkeye978 – Patience, Balance and Inspiration Pays Off<o:p></o:p>
I can't imagine how many outtakes there must be for this shot! Great capture!<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#36 – Michael Atkins – Worn<o:p></o:p>
Nice texture. Totally not seeing the themes here. Sorry.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#38 – samsplace – <st1:place><st1:PlaceName>Spirit</st1:PlaceName> <st1:PlaceType>Lake</st1:PlaceType></st1:place><o:p></o:p>
This shot is speaking to me more of symmetry than fluid. A bit more color in the sky would make this image stronger for me.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#39 – eoren1 – The Ocean’s Breath<o:p></o:p>
Really nice motion around the main rock, however the lack of color in this image makes it weaker for me. A closer crop may have made it stronger.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#40 – Karrie McD – electric playground<o:p></o:p>
Very nice interpretation of the theme. The leading lines are great. I would perhaps consider cropping some off the right to really emphasize those lines.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#41 – BeachBill – Lines and Tigers and…oh my!<o:p></o:p>
Great title and definitely geometric. Just not quite as strong as some of the other architectural shots.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#42 – VisualXpressions – Amber Waves of Grain<o:p></o:p>
I really like this, however it does say spikey to me more than geometric or fluid. The composition is really nice though and I like your pp choices.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#43 – thegreenegg – The Smoke Ring<o:p></o:p>
Whilst I love the retro feel of this image, the blown light areas spoil it for me. It might not have mattered so much if those hadn't included the main focus of the smoke ring. A reshoot would be worthwhile as I think this could be an awesome image.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#44 – richtersl – Steel Girder Tunnel<o:p></o:p>
Great shot and very geometric. Like the b&w conversion - great choice. Real close to my top ten.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#45 – Rockporters – After the Rain<o:p></o:p>
Great colors and I love the water droplets. A little more space on the left would be preferred and perhaps a little more dof, but really nice regardless.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#46 – peterst6909 – Lightening in a Clear Blue Sky<o:p></o:p>
Very geometric and dynamic. I love the colors, but a bit oversaturated and contrasty for me. Backing off a bit on that would have made the image a little more real feeling to me, but that is likely just a personal taste.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#47 – Wild Wally - the *MONOLITH* to the Moon<o:p></o:p>
Very nice leading lines to your moon. A little obvious on the composite and I wish there was a hair more space on top. Very cool image though.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#48 – biotemp – Clouds over the Rail<o:p></o:p>
A nice peaceful image. A little more dynamic angle on the fence/rail would likely take the "Geometric" idea further.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#50 – renstar – Modern Farm<o:p></o:p>
Absolutely gorgeous shot. Not quite as strong on theme for me, but beautiful, none-the-less.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#51 – tlee – Refracted<o:p></o:p>
Great colors and really nice composition. Not quite as strong on theme for me, but a really cool shot regardless.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#52 – Sunset Sailor – Pale Companion<o:p></o:p>
Beautiful shot with my only nit being the obvious composite work. Great comp, color and theme interpretation. SO close to my top ten. If the moon were much more subtle or even left out, it would have been there for sure.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#53 – achambers – Sticky<o:p></o:p>
Great idea, just a lot of noise and the blown highlights are distracting.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#54 – Ann McRae – Currents<o:p></o:p>
Gorgeous shot and right on theme. Cropping some off the top would take the horizon off center without losing too much detail. Just missed my top ten as well.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#55 – urlikft – Shapeness<o:p></o:p>
Great interpretation with super lines and comp. I really love the abstract feel.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#57 – Jet – Shimmering Spillage<o:p></o:p>
Great idea and execution. I find the background distracting, but still, nicely done.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#58 – TPBinKC – Reflected Support<o:p></o:p>
Lots of great geometric shapes here. Well done.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#59 – imax – Converging Circles<o:p></o:p>
A really neat idea that has potential. The image feels a little dark and I think some stronger, cleaner lines would pull this further.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#60 – Cswinton – Cold Steel<o:p></o:p>
Really nice. My eye keeps getting drawn to the detail in the top right corner and then out of the frame, however. Cropping that out would have made this stronger for me.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#61 – jwear – Pisces<o:p></o:p>
I like the way the sun is lighting the fish. The theme is there, the shot is just missing something for me.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>
#62 – Jwill – Mastery of stillness<o:p></o:p>
Disqualified - what a shame…awesome shot!<o:p></o:p>
<o:p> </o:p>

Thank you for the feedback. Distraction or not, the shadow was important...at least for me...to keep in the image. As for the nails and pants.... We were doing some casually dressed and cap and gown shots to mark her graduation from college. As we were leaving/wrapping things up, I looked down that breezeway and thought....what the heck, so it wasn't really a planned in advance shot, but rather an excersize I decided to do...on the spot...for the challenge. I was very pleased with the exposure, and the fact that she was frozen at only 1/200. I have only recently begun using off camera flash, so that was fun as well. Thanks again for the feedback.
As for the rest of the contestants....
There were some very nice images entered in the challenge...and I really liked the variety. From portraits, macros, wildlife to wide open landscapes....it was nice to see a theme that could garnish participation from photographers of every ilk. Best of luck to ALL of the finalists!!!

This shot is speaking to me more of symmetry than fluid. A bit more color in the sky would make this image stronger for me.<o:p></o:p>
Thank you Emily for reviewing my photo.

Emily, thanks, I appreciate the feedback. Completely agree about the crop, I tried many different ways but it was tough to get it exactly right.

I like the way the sun is lighting the fish. The theme is there, the shot is just missing something for me.<o:p></o:p>

I agree and understand that themes can be taken from multiple angles.
In the dual contrasting themes of LPS days the themes were opposites. Geometric and liquid do not seem to be opposites, just different. That sounds more like a single theme (geometric fluids), not dual themes. Some very wonderful shots of round water fit that theme to a T.
Geometric and fluid describing the composition of the photo would be the opposites that the dual theme means to me. Of course, I have badly interpreted the themes before so my opnion does not matter a whole lot.
Not trying to argue or say anyone is wrong, just trying to explain my thoughts a little better.
Thank you...
I made a small sub selection from what judges have already picked:
Nice to see the LPS crowd going strong!
Thanks for the feedback Emily. I agree about the shadows in the background - hard to minimise in the environment I was in.
And thanks VelvtRide for putting me in your top 10!
