Wednesday Night Tease: Tawny

Here's a kwik peek into what's brewing:-)

I decided to try a new sunset location - a tall rock formation overlooking local water reservoir.

1. The Setting

2. In the base camp

3. She's so cute in this dress

4. Shooting

5. Last shot with two strobes

320211799_LB3XU-XL.jpg

Just a few seconds after this shot was taken the left-hand light stand fell into the edge of the cliff.. :cry :bash It was surreal - it leaned and started to fall slowly. I saw it clearly, but I was about 50 or so ft away (I was shooting with 70-200), there was no way I could make it... :dunno
Luckily both flash itself and the pocket wizard survived the fall and I managed to rescue them (and they both still work!) :clap , but the battery cassette slipped off and got stuck in the bushes hanging over ~50-80 ft off a sheer vertical drop about 6 ft below my reach... I decided a piece of plastic is not worth risking my life, and continued the shoot with one strobe... :dunno

Glad you recovered most of the equipment. Insurance claim in process for the rest?

Your teaser is doing it's job quite nicely! Really looking forward to seeing some of the finished shots from this shoot. Especially as you are using unmodified light - be real interested to see the results.

I find it amazing how the quality of your work product has been improving in quantum jumps - really nice to see.

DO you do TFP? You have so many models all the time. If you're not doing TFP... you should be raking in some dough!
I'm sorry you lost equipment. After our thorough discussion on strobes yesterday... :cry that's not good. I'd probably throw up.

The loss essentially was the cartridge and 6 PowerEx batteries. I don't think I'd bother my insurance over $25 :-) But I'll sure make adjustments to my outdoors tactics to prevent this from happening again. Iit wasn't the first time the damn stand falls, and this time I was really close to losing the whole thing ($500+ or even more).

Thanks! It was actually using the unmodified light (only gels) for the most of my last sunset shots. Umbrellas/brollyboxes don't like the windy environments, plus I want my lights to kinda match the sun, which is as sharp as it gets...

It was only a cartrige and batteries. Cassette is $12 at b&h, already ordered two. I'm still thinking about getting the new batteries (I have enough spares for now)

No it's called wear a corset or "suck it in, honey." Jeez, whatever happened to making yourself look the best you can, even if it's a lie. That's what modelling is all about. So you don't have blonde hair, dye it! Blue eyes? no? Wear contacts! Really short? Wear stilettoes! blah blah...
I wish I could charge and make money... :cry I think that's a little bit of PS overboard. She should come to the shoot looking her best. Was she another newbie?
Ah! I'm being so critical... it does irk me when people think "oh he can just ps my tummy in, I don't have to work out or diet or make myself the model I want to be." It's irresponsible.
If I ever get anywhere near as good at photography I'll have to go to people's homes and have them wear what looks best on them. They'll have to try on several outfits and I'll "say no, bunchy. no, bad colour, do you have anything ruffly?" Spandex is no one's friend. No one.

I look forward to this post production of yours... I am very excited to see what happens now. :lurk

    Yes, she's a newbie :-). mwink.gif
I was telling her "suck it honey" at first, but then the whole "light-falling-off-the-cliff" happened and I lost my mental focus a bit. ne_nau.gif
I also knew I could PS it, so it was more important for me to simply get her as relaxed and playful as I could without going overboard with directions and constant nagging rolleyes1.gif

BE the photographer! Show them ladies what's what! I know what you mean. I get really hard on myself if I don't make sure hair is in place, no fly aways and the dress lying right. I'll get the pictures back and go "oh that was a good one if it weren't for..." I'll then think about it and find I was thinking about the sun cascading down a tree or the sparkle in the eyes... or why doesn't that bird just shut up already! :D

There must be a balance between directing and going with the flow. Especially considering this was not an editorial assignment. mwink.gif
Also taking into account it took me about a minute to climb down from the crow nest high in the rocks 50 ft away which was my shooting position and about the same to get back, every trip back and forth to fix a lighting or a strand of hair was pretty costly... ne_nau.gif

I was being sarcastic. I didn't mean you should lilly pluck every girl. I'm just saying I know what you mean. My criticism isn't on you anyway. Mostly, I nitpicked the girl.rolleyes1.gif How many dresses did she have? The blue and green were pretty colours but she could rock a red or an orange even better. She has that great olive skin and dark hair. Nice fabric choices for her though.

I told her it is a relatively long hike so she only brought a couple. Next time when we shoot studio I hope she'll bring more:-)

If you take someone up there again [on a windy day] and [secure your equipment] a wedding gown with a light but long train to catch the wind and long simple veil, or even a nonbridal gown just one with lots of **fabric** would look pretty killer.
    November Rain, anyone. Anyone?

Exactly my idea for this spot. Why do you think I bought/brought the chiffon? mwink.gif Now, where are those Santa Ana winds where you need them? rolleyes1.gif

She could hold one of those personal fans. rolleyes1.gif Awesome........ I hope to see some setting sun and some high d-RAMA chiffon a-sailing in the wind!! You should find a model with long hair, like, butt long. That'd look pretty neat in a big dress and veil or scarf in arm. oooo.

Why is the weight thing always an issue ??
Beauty is in how we present our "REAL" selves , not how much we can change ourselves for 1 short moment ..
I am willing to bet that you do not have any daughters ...

Unfortunately, modeling is not about showing your real self. More than that, it is not healthy to be overweight. I could stand to lose weight myself but I'm not trying to make a career for myself as a model. Likewise, I don't think super stick thing is a good look either. If her thighs were hollow and she looked like any effort would make her pass out, I'd be saying eat a sandwich.

As the saying goes, "if it were a perfect world..."

Oh , no problem at all !!! I was not trying to be dis-respectful at all , just adding some input that all portraits do NOT have to subcum to the idea that there is an absolute , but rather be the best that we can be .
More and more of todays models are becoming a , hence , "REALISTIC" look rather than a completely over-processed look .
    :D

Not always, there are plnety of females here in LA who proudly present themselves as "plus-size modes"... Lot of designers have special things for this market, since it a big one...
