Smugmug Availability??

Down?

We're having some temporary difficulties. We expect full service to resume shortly. Sorry!

My Dell laptop crashed the last few days. Evidently Nvida, the video chip maker, has had an extremely high number of video chip failures. Its even on youtube showing failure mode. I got to see it live and inperson as my screen just melted down in front of me. Just making sure its not me, but a maintainance outage.........

Hey Ken :) Sorry for the Read Only status today! Don, our CEO & Chief Geek is on the job making some adjustments.

Our availability has been and continues to be really, really, really high. I'll stack us up against any competing service. We're not 5 9s but really, really close.

We continue to work on improvements that will improve speed, performance uptime and more.

Smugmug is kind of coming in and out today, but overall they are reliable. The "read only" mode is also very helpful.
And you will be hard pressed to find better customer service.

We're in read only mode - you'll be able to make changes once we're back to full normal status. Can't say when though, other than it's being worked on.
    Sorry for the hassle!

I've been with SM for a few years, and this type of outage happens, but is pretty rare. I've had more outages of my own web site than with SM.

And even when there are outages, the speed and tact with which our inquiries are addressed is top notch. I don't think I'll ever leave SM. I think they'll have my credit card for life. :D

Andy, that date doesn't show on the site (from your link) that I can see. The only date is the 26th, referring to a previous update. If you hit the smugmug status update banner at the top it gives you today's date.

The wordpress page has been largely unavailable to me as well today.

ugh let's not split hairs, the date is on the single image view as well - but it's easy to confuse with the Dec 26 date in the breadcrumb - Sorry!

I wasn't trying to split hairs, just trying to help you see why some of your customers might be confused. The view from your link does NOT contain a date. Not a big deal to me, but I thought you'd want to know.

    I guess I was wrong. Have a nice day.:D

Hoyboy it's never wrong to speak up. There is a date

But I can see why the other date might be confusing. Not much I can do about that right now, but I'm grateful to you for pointing it out. Thanks!

Off line? Read Only mode is not off line - just to be clear.
But yes, there have been some issues in the past few weeks. We're making the site better & stronger though, after them so I expect performance to improve yet again. Nervous? Over the years, I'll stand our uptime record against any similar service.

We're sorry for today's read only mode - it's never good - but we'll get things back to normal just as fast as possible!

thumb.gif on that....I uploaded a family shoot last night and they just called and placed a large order, they viewed the photos in read only mode.

Probably doubled my order with this family because they have a bunch of relatives here and they bought photos as well. If the site was dead I would have not have been popular with them.

I think the read-only mode is much better than nothing! But with all due respect, doesn't it count as an outage? I mean, the site is not providing the functionality that people pay for, because it's temporarily broken.

I keep reading here that SmugMug has 99.99%+ uptime. How can that be? A single outage of an hour would make that untrue. The site has experienced many outages recently.

Failures can always happen. With respect to the database stuff, I recommend implementing some sort of spare which is continuously updated. Most or all enterprise-class RDBMSs offer such a feature. Then even if the unthinkable happens, and redundant systems on a particular machine all fail at once, you're still okay and recovery can be very fast.

I agree... you guys are too big to be having these issues! I've had no downtime with flickr in 6 months, and it seems like a weekly event here.

Time to get a beta site and limit production changes to every 6 months...

If flickr ever gets a way to a create custom view of pages, you guys might be in trouble... I can print a picture on flickr for $.15 and pick it up at target in one hour... And their printing is easy and CHEAP. I just tried printing one of my pics here and it hourglassing... headscratch.gif

It's a new year, time to plan, or start fresh with smugmug2.0!

Someone (smug'ns) needs team up with facebook and take over all their photo needs... Facebook+SmugMug = FaceSmug|SmugFace|MugBook|SmugBook deal.gif

You should also team up with cooliris, they are on to something...
