    And how about talkiet.smugmug.com which is fully Akamaized?

    Really interesting question.... I'll add in that as well right now and start collecting stats...

    I was actually under the impression that Akamaiization (!!!) wouldn't go live for anything until after the switch was thrown and custom hostnames were covered too...

    I'll report back in a couple of days with new graphs :-)

    However, you didn't comment on whether this problem that a LOT of people reported was ever tracked down :-)

    Just as additional feedback, I'm trying my site from work on a PC in Firefox, IE, and Safari (for PC, obviously). I would still describe all as slow.

    I should also point out that I do use custom domain, but GoDaddy has a CName record set, so I think (from Baldy's post) that's all I need.

    I'll keep trolling this thread looking for updates. Thank you.

    I don't have any more to say yet. The site is screaming fast for me... from NY to California. We're still looking.

    I checked my site early this morning and it was back to its fast self. However, I just checked again at 11:30AM EST and it is pretty darn slow. I tried with both FF and IE7. Most pages just don't load. Hmmmm......

    EDIT: It is just as slow when I use mynickname.smugmug.com

    Folks, we are still trying to figure out what is going on.

    Can you run this test for me? http://www.dslreports.com/linequality

    I am seeing some of the internet test showing some problems. I have had trouble accessing SmugMug and some other sites. I also use Comcast.

    Slow for me too last couple days
    Mine has been slow for the last couple days as well. Tracert is below for both smugmug.com and my site.

    I find that the site responds in reasonable times, but loading is another story. For example, it can take up to a minute for all the thumbnails to load on my home page (there are 50), and has taken 30 seconds+ to do something like save new settings to a gallery.

    Line Quality test at DSL Reports can't be run as it says it is too busy. Speed test to California shows 1.57 Kbs and and NJ shows 3.4Kbs. I am in Toronto.

    I have been having major issues, the site is UNUSABLE. Cablevision and other other Long Island NY providers are having issues. My company internet backbone is also having issues. I have had emails complaining of the speed. This is turning people off to my website. I was told by a friend to put the images on a cd so he can see them. (I can not do this because the entire idea is that they buy the images)

    SLOW is SLOW
    REALLY slow for me too. I am beginning to think I made a mistake coming here from (competitor). After being w SM for nearly two months, I notice inconsistant performance regularly. I run FF, but in this day and age, we shouldn't have to ask "what browser are you... " FF, IE, etc. That's what we (and most importantly) - my CUSTOMERS use. I'm not going to ask my customers to "change browsers, and let me know what's going on."
    Seymore wrote:
    not able to view any images in this folder. http://moorefoto.smugmug.com/gallery/1886235_BEQTL
    On another machine, once, I also got the error of "photo not found" on 4 different images in the above gallery.

    W2k and IE6. Please don't TELL me to try FF. If it can't work with what most are still running, that's an issue.

    Also noted that dgrin was doggin' a bit when I came in to report this.

    Thanks...

    The internets are very strange... today up until NOON here in NY (Cablevision for me, too) Smuggy was screaming fast. Now it is very slow. Still don't know what the issue is.

    Hi, we don't tell folks to use different browsers, except for problem determination sometimes. We fully support IE6, IE7, IE8, Firefox and Safari.

    I'm sorry that you feel iffy because of this. I can assure you that we're really concerned about speed, it's our mantra deal.gif We've spent a $$fortune on infrastructure to make the site fast, and reliable. I don't think you'll find a faster site in our space, anywhere. Alexa and other services bear this out.

    Still, we don't like it when stuff happens like today - we'll do everything we can to get the service speedy!

    Thanks for your reply Andy, I will hold my breath as you guys are usually very fast to act. It is stressful yet being in IT, I understand that technology sometimes sucks. But I am glad it is not me that has to figure this out clap.gif . Good luck guys.

    As per the newbie, I could understand feeling it was not a good move to come here, but I have been here for 3 years and Smugmug does really address most issues very very fast. I beleve your stress and frustration will soon go away. I am just a customer and am judging from past experiences.

    Mine is agonizingly slow today - just for Smugmug, not for any other website that I try to access. I'm in the Portland Oregon area....so it's not just back East that this is happening. It seems to be a smug related problem, not any individual ISP.

    Here too (I'm in the UK), from yesterday afternoon it has been very frustrating. Again, only with SM - everything else is normal speed. The images I've uploaded today and yesterday took much much longer than normal to appear.
    It's the same for ie8 and FF - makes no difference which I use.

    Very, very slow on the FIOS connection at my office. Dgrin, Google, my website, everything else is very speedy, SmugMug is very, very slow. Going photo to photo is pretty fast, but navigating galleries takes an eternity (12 seconds to load a gallery from the portrait section of my site).
    The problem seems to come up after lb1.smugmug.net (208.79.45.41), so it looks like an issue with a SmugMug server, not an ISP on the SmugMug end, or the client end.

    Remember, nickname.smugmug.com is FAST, akamaized :D

    Here is what I got for a traceroute from my work PC:

    I'm not sure that I understand your nickname comment. If I go to sskoutas.smugmug.com, it loads quickly, but the first link I click brings me "in to" my custom URL anyway, so the browsing is still quite slow. I want to give you the information you're looking for, so if I am missing something, please clarify. Thanks.

    Folks, we are still trying to figure out what is going on.

    Can you run this test for me? http://www.dslreports.com/linequality

    I am seeing some of the internet test showing some problems. I have had trouble accessing SmugMug and some other sites. I also use Comcast.

    Doc - I get a "members only" shut-out on that test. However I went to Speakeasy.net and ran their speed test and I came in with 11.8M down and 2.2M up, which I would qualify as fairly normal for my work connection.

    If this helps in your data collection, I'm in RI and connecting with Cox Communications via cable.

    I've been a customer here for a while. Let these guys do their work... I am sure you will be pleased with the results. For every issue that I have ever had with SmugMug, their response has been fast and complete. I seriously doubt you made any mistake in coming here.

    You are using Absolute links in your navbar, change them to relative an then when you are on

    http://sskoutas.smugmug.com you'll stay there.

    When you are on http://www.halfpintprints.com you'll stay on that domain.

    Make them like this:

    <ul>
    <li><a href="/">h o m e</a></li>
    <li><a href="/galleries">g a l l e r i e s</a></li>
    <li><a href="/popular/">p o p u l a r • i m a g e s</a></li>
    <li><a href="javascript:showRecent(30)">r e c e n t • a d d i t i o n s</a></li>
    <li><a href="http://blog.halfpintprints.com/">b l o g</a></li>
    <li><a href="javascript:norobotmail('steve', 'halfpintprints.com')">e m a i l</a></li>
    <li><a href="/gallery/2312526">l i n k s</a></li>

    <li><a href="/gallery/2311056">g u e s t b o o k</a></li>
    </ul>

    PS: Why do you have 3 year olde slideshow code on your site?

    /*=========================*/
    /*== SLIDE SHOW ==*/
    /*== version 0.57 ==*/
    /*== Updated 12 Dec 2006 ==*/

    For folks new to Smugmug... this slowness is unusual... when everything's working right, SM is in fact blazing fast. For Smugmug heroes... I'm glad to see you're taking this seriously... it's been a sporadic problem for me over the past few weeks, and I've heard about it from a few of my viewers a couple of times in the past few months (although some or all of that could have been network problems on their parts).

    It was dreadfully, terribly slow for me last night too. Whether I used Firefox, IE, or SendtoSmugmug from DSL... or IE from a server with a gigabit connection on my workplace T3. SendtoSmugmug would stall out completely after uploading somewhere between 1 and 40 proofs (avg ~150k/file), and the site would just not respond to browser requests at all.

    So yeah, my akamaized subdomain was terrible (even from the workplace T3), but www.smugmug.com and dgrin.com were still lightning-fast. I'd be looking at akamai, maybe some hardware failure within the cluster that serves some of our domains?

    It cleared up around midnight CA time and then was downright snappy for a while. Now it's crawling sporadically again this morning, but at least it's responding -- last night, no such luck.

    I'm seeing some re-routing on the West coast side of things, but network performance overall is not bad. I'll email or pm links to line quality reports from last night and this morning if desired; don't want to post them here because of student privacy concerns.

    I'd bet the farm on a hardware problem in the cluster. :uhoh

    OK, I looked... I can't even figure out where that code ends. I know you've got more important things to do, but if you can tell me what the LAST line of that code is, I'll delete it. I'll change the links to relative too.
