I've changed to relative links and I would say that my site is still slow in both sskoutas.smugmug.com or in halfpintprints.com. I would, however, give the advantage to sskoutas.smugmug.com.

I don't know if it is related (as in a delay issue), but I am also noticing that the custom thumbnail crop tool doesn't seem to be working for me. If I set a custom crop, the system comes back to me with a confirmation message then prompts me to return to gallery. When I do, I see the thumbnail as it was before the custom crop.

Minor issue... I'm only bringing it up in case it is related.

Have the speed issues been resolved? Considering the speed at which my site normally operates, the turtle would definitely win today. My site still seems to be on a work slowdown.

Much of Chris' site seems snappy to me, but I did get one hangup going into Tahoe.

I would still describe my site as slow. Loading a gallery into thumbnail view is like 1, 2, 3, 4, 5... you can see each thumbnail load in, one at a time. The last few seem to take much longer.

Both. This time, however, I think I have to give a much more clear advantage to sskoutas.smugmug.com. Maybe the last thumbnail coming into a new gallery hangs.

I'm doing some more surfing of both. I'll let you know if I see any interesting patterns.

    Smugmug rocks the Net again!
    :ivarclap.gifbarb
Browsing (my site as well as cmac) is loads better. Communication through SendtoSmugmug seems to be going pretty well too -- I'm uploading larger files now, 15-20x the size of the earlier ones, at about the same time per file. So that's a huge difference.

Also, the AJAX stuff to edit titles, descriptions, &c is working now. Usually it works once, then stalls out every time thereafter until I close the browser and start over. Now it's working as it should. I thought that was a problem with my Firefox config... maybe not...

About the only "pattern" I see is that the last one or two thumbnails (I'm talking browsing here, not uploading) take an inordinately long time compared to the rest of the page. I just (roughly) timed a 15 thumb / 1 image page at about 1 second for everything but the last thumb... 7 seconds overall.

Still, this seems much quicker than last night. I'm going home now... will report back later from my Mac.

    Andy,

Ran several tests and even viewed one of my HiDef video slideshows (http://www.sunglophoto.com/gallery/3841746_ebMHf#383815711_m4yVZ-A-LB). It appears as though someone found the problem. My site left the turtle in it's dust.

Thank everyone for their hard work and dedication.

Mine's doing great right now. I was running into MAJOR probs whenever I tried to get into control panel, or the gallery customization interfaces, or anything back end like that. (it was taking up to one minute to load most of the time.

Now it's doing great - a matter of a couple seconds if not instantly.

Thanks for whatever happened to speed things up! The nudibranchs were starting to pass me by....

Well i'm not going to call this one dead yet, but it certainly is improved. I am still seeing slowdowns on clicks that fire AJAX calls. Page loads aren't as quick as usual, but defnitely better than yesterday.

From scanning through the pages that were posted since my initial one it looks as though the traceroutes are fine. All have reasonable response time to the smugmug servers.

From my engineering eye and what little i *think* i know of how smugmug hosts, I would say the slowdown is happening between smugmug and the requests to Amazon. This would explain why traceroutes, pings, and any other hits to *.smugmug.com would respond quickly, but the page still would load slow. Only you smugmug devs would know for sure...

OK...here is the test. I'm on my mac, using FireFox.

    HP=www.halfpintprints.com
    SM=sskoutas.smugmug.com

time tests using FireFox extended statusbar plugin (not scientific). I haven't been to my own site tonight since I got home, so I don' tknow if things are speedy or slow.

    PG1 (home): HP 2.241, SM 1.221
Galleries main link: HP 4.194, SM 0.886
Family Link: HP 0.922, SM .0610
"Little Lady" Gallery (30 thumbs, 1 image): HP 1.669**, SM 0.813/4sec

** note on above... the plugin that I'm using is saying that a page is loaded well before I'm seeing all of the thumbs displayed. In the case of the HP result of 1.669, I would estimate it was more like 6-8 seconds, but I wasn't paying perfect attention. In the case of the SM result of 0.813, I counted it out in my head as best as I could... the plugin said 0.813 but I "one Mississippi'ed" a four count.

Little Lady page 2 - HP 3.896 / actual about 22 seconds of which 14 seconds was waiting for the final thumb to load. Everything else was showing. SM 0.696/4 seconds.

Need more or do you have a more reliable method that I can time page loads?

    more feedback.
I'm still receiving spotty performance. Often zippy, and occassionally I am getting these extended (like 20 second to 1 minute) "blackout" periods where nothing smugmug related seems to work. My internet is blazing fast tonight at home, by the way. I just clocked a 25M down, 2.7M up (about twice the speed of my plan).

I'm working in Lightroom 2 tonight and I noticed during a couple of the blackouts that Jeffrey Friedl's export plugin was "hanging" on "getting credentials from smugmug." At the same time, on another monitor, I had a couple of tabs on Firefox with smugmug pages from my gallery stuck on loading. I used another tab on Firefox to load another page (Google, instant) and do a search. I used another tab on Firefox to do the speedtest at Speakeasy.net.

Once smugmug seemed to unfreeze, everything came in at once, and quickly. The two smugmug pages loaded and Jeffrey's plugin authenticated me.

On another blackout, I got the following message:
    Gateway Timeout

The proxy server did not receive a timely response from the upstream server. Reference #1.7e4bf6d8.1241233892.1c0b1f8

    Don't know if that helps.

I will say this - when it is fast, it is fast. Furthermore, it seems to be fast most of the time I've been on tonight.

Edit: I am working, by the way, in sskoutas.smugmug.com, not in halfpintprints. I also exchanged correspondence with Doc earlier today and made changes to my A Records at GoDaddy which may have been slowing things up for me, but those changes have been completed for about 7 hours now.
