Yet Another Sedona Moonrise

Tonight I tried to duplicate the Cathedral Rock moonrise shots that Argyle recently posted. Mine didn't turn out like his for a variety of reasons. But I did get some pretty good light on the rocks. Thanks to Argyle for the inspiration and advice. :thumb

Very nicely done Joel. I like this shot a lot.

Did you do any wheeling while in Sedona?

Hey thanks, Aaron! I've done two wheeling roads in Sedona so far. I took Schnebly Road from I17 into Sedona yesterday. This morning I did the Solider Pass Trail, including 7 Sacred Pools and Teacup (nasty little trail!) . Today I'm working from my hotel room, then I'm going to give the moon another try tonight. mwink.gif

That's a beauty...you picked the best day to catch the light. According to my charts, on July 5th and 6th the sun would linger a bit longer while setting, making for great light on the rocks. I was clouded out on my trip for the best day, so I had to "settle" for darker rock. I hope that you plan of framing this one!

BTW...what was your vantage point for this shot?

Thank you, sir! Vantage point was about 2 miles down Upper Red Rock Loop Rd. There's a little parking area on the left, and a trail that goes to the top of a knoll. Awesome little spot. Although, I'm planning on trying a little lower tonight down by the Crossing and see if I can position myself so that the moon appears lower, like yours. mwink.gif

I know that spot well...I took my shots from a spot directly across the road from the knoll and along the fence line (about 113 degrees on the compass dial). Now I gotta get back there to try and get the good light...

the color in this shot is great - I like it better than the other moon shot your detail is great - I will be shooting there during the Oct full moon - did that last year the moon is much further to the left of the spires but a nice shot none the less - using a GND filter might have helped a bit - but your detail is great

After the moonrise, I shot an wider-angle HDR. Not wild about the way it came out, although it does show the scene.

113? Is that measured from true north, or magnetic north? My compass said (and I was looking for) 123 degrees. Although, I didn't correct for magnetic declination, so perhaps 113 is actually correct for that spot.

Yeah, there were several other photographers across the way in that same spot. Is there any particular reason they don't climb up the knoll?

Hey Marcy, thanks! I wish my sky was a little darker, but otherwise I'm not sure what a GND would have done for me, especially with the moon overlapping the rocks in height. Thoughts?

    Thanks,

Its from magnetic north...and I'll bet the folks along the fence were friends that I shot with last month. As far as why...you get a little bit of a better angle, allowing you to see the leading edge of the moon as it begins to appear from behind the buttes (the best that I can tell). But a lot also depends on the inclination angle. When I got my shots, the moon rose at about a 45 degree angle and never got behind the butte on the far right...it came from behind the left butte, rose behind the Bride and Groom formation, and then up from there. From the looks of your shots, I'd guess that it was about the same? But either way, your first image is a definite winner and one to be proud of...I definitely need to get back there to try my luck again at the good light. Maybe soon...
