hi everyone, i'm a newbie here. this is my first posting of pics. looks like a great site with a lot of participation. hoping to jump in and find a place to hang out!! i'm a pretty laid back person. only been shooting for a couple years and only started shooting motorsports in the last two months. really enjoying and looking to learn so dont be shy with the feedback!!!

all these pics were shot with a D300 and the 50-500 OS.

thanks for looking. comments and critiques much appreciated!!!

Don't get down if you don't get any responses to your threads on here..it's hard to get replies on here specially for the automotive stuff. You did a great job of panning to keep the cars sharp. Nicely done.

Great panning. #2 is razor sharp. I suck at panning. I need to practice it.

thanks everyone! allen, i was probably about 50 feet? close enough that you could use a 200mm lens and get full frame shots.

    I am such a dork:
    • an IndyCar is about 16' from nose to tail
    • the field of view of a 200mm lens on a D300 is about 7 degrees

So if the car fills the frame, with the nose along one side of the frame and the tail along the other, as it passes you and you are looking directly at the side of the car, you would be about 130 feet from it.

makes perfect sense to me. i was wrong in my 50'. it was more like a sand wedge away which is about a 50-70 yard shot for me. 150'. yep, i think that's a better number!!

MORE MOTORSPORTS!! thanks for the encourgement. i will post up some more from a recent event.

No criticism from me on any of them, great shots and very good panning, I would say you have got the hang of it.

I will weigh in here. The pics are well exposed and sharp. However, shots of a single car portray no idea of motion or spacing on the track. Try and include another car in the shot or get a real close up of the cockpit. Go to F1.com and select gallery. Take a look at some of the past races for ideas.
If you are going to pan, have something other than the track in the background. As you pan that blurs and will give a nice measure of the speed.
