The front does come off...so light is more directed, less scattered?

Front diffuser provides maximum scattering - which is exactly your enemy in this case. If it doesn't come off - switch to an accurately focused ubmrella, as per my previous post.

No problem. I have another shoot for tomorrow, but the circumstances are quite similar, with limited room etc. I am intending to duplicate this unless something totally different crops up. If it does, I'll just have to do my best with what I have!
