Stats - feature or bug ?

Hi,

There is a little detail that I don't understand.
When I look in the control panel I can see the following info :

this month > photos viewed: 2840 | bandwidth used: 256.5 MB (out of 1 PB)

When I click to view the details at the bottom of the page I get something different.
The total hits for all the galleries gives me

Hits: 15729 C. Ratio: ~22% Bytes: 256.08 MB

I understand very well how the 15729 is obtained (total of all the pictures displayed in all the galleries but how do you get the 2840 ?
Is it a temporary bug related to the new version released today ? Is it a feature that I don't understand ?

Thanks

It turns out we had a nasty bug in stats that we didn't find out until just now.

I'm still trying to sort it out and figure out how we can fix the problem, if that's possible, but the short version goes like this:

We inadvertently added all of January 2007's traffic in with January 2006. I can't believe that no employees or customers noticed this until today, but that's what happened every second of every day during 2007.

Extricating the January 2007 traffic from the January 2006 is basically impossible, since our data thinks it was Jan 2006.

If we have a solution, I'll be sure to follow-up, but we may not. This isn't related in any way to today's software update other than a bug was found and fixed.

February should work fine, but you can bet I'll be watching it at 12:01am on Feb 1st.

Sorry for the confusion and trouble. I realize this sucks.

    detailed stats missing
It appears all my detail stats are missing. The overall stats page is populated, but when I click on a gallery to get gallery level stats, they are not there or I just have a few photos (maybe what was visited in the last ??? hours).

So if I have last January 2006, and you keep adding until Jan 31 2007, I can subtract and get my Jan 2007 hits?

If so, It may be of value to let the bug ride to Jan 31.

    Just wondering.

Likewise for me. But I'm only showing 1-2 views per image instead of the correct 3 of views.

Seems the stats are still getting dumped into 2006, but we're now seeing 2007.

    Well
Don, that sounds like a weird bug, but I opened my account only in November so in Jan 2006 I was not a customer (I know, I know, shame on me, but it's never too late to redeem yourself) and I cannot have any traffic. So what does that mean for me ?

I understand if the stuff prior to the upgrade is lost. But I've got some images uploaded just last night and so the counts on them SHOULD be accurate... since there not, I asked the above.

    Sorry.

When I look at stats: http://peiklk.smugmug.com/homepage/stats.mg?AlbumID=1927555

I see like 3 views for 8 images uploaded last night. Those views should be around 100-150 at this time of the day. They are showing on my site mind you, but are NOT reflected properly in the stats page. This is as of 8:53am ET.

I don't know if this is related to the bug or to to the update or what but the stats seem to be showing "total photo views" rather than "unique photo views". Each time I look at a gallery the stats record a hit on each size I look at each time; instead of 1 hit per user no matter how many times they look at it. The thumbnail count seems to be unaffected it doesn't increase each time I load a gallery.

If I remember correctly before the update stats were unique views not total views, right?

Still the exact same thing. Picture that would normally have 150-200 views at this time is showing 2 thumbs and that's it.

    Suggestion.

This gallery is marked private. All the "views" are hotlinked to a remote site... is is possible the counter code is not incrementing correctly for remote views?

Kevin, I'm sorry but we've just had a major new release and we all have been working 24/7 to get things "just right" -- this is on the list to look at and the engineers know.

    Your continued patience is appreciated.

No problem. I was just concerned with the flux of people who are reporting they are not having this problem, that it was being ignored. You guys are doing a great job and as long as it's still on the open items list, I'm fine.

Anything new on the main thrust of this thread? Not the previous years stuff, but the fact that new photos have invalid stats.

Similar Problem with Stats (I Think)
Since the change to the new version of Smugmug, I've noticed two things. First, in smugmug style, it now automatically chooses whether to use smugmug small or smugmug medium. Second, even though I do not have larges turned on for these galleries, the stats are showing large photos accessed. Why is that occuring? Is it just a problem with the stats? Depending on the browser and resolution size is there a smugmug large? Is there a way of turning this feature off short of relegating all users of the gallery to thumbs or something else? I really do not want large sizes accessed at this time. Thanks for any input.

On Edit: Also, originals are showing up as accessed as well even though access to them was also turned off.

    Hi Kenny,

We server small (9 thumbs + small image) or regular 15 thumbs + medium image) depending on browser viewport size.

Can we have a gallery link please, to look at your stats question?

Originals can show as 'accessed' when the original on the longest side is 800px or less. In that case, L is the same as Original. It may also show as accessed when the photo is ordered as a print.
