I tried to look at my site and it seems to load extremely slow. Are there server problems?

Hi, there are not. Everything is zippy for us and most folks. Let's try to trouble shoot you - can you run a traceroute for us, and paste the results here? Holler if you need instructions.

To run a traceroute on a Mac, open finder. Then open applications>utilities>network utility. Then click on the Traceroute tab. When that opens, type in hera.smugmug.com. Copy and paste the results here...

    Hi Leif,
Please contact us at the Help Desk (click on the "contact SmugMug" link at the bottom of any page on your site) and we will give you direction on running a traceroute and depending on what it shows, a few more tests. The results of these tests should help us zero in on where the problem lies.

We look forward to hearing from you :D

    Man, I hate comcast.

I can load denver post.com and I can run a tracert to my router but I can't get a tracerout outside of my home network without timing out. ne_nau.gif

Having said that, I can load cnn.com, denverpost.com advrider.com but not my galleries in smugmug. I can navigate within smugmug until I select a gallery. At that point firefox just grinds away.

Glad to see it is not just me going crazy. headscratch.gif

Same here, I can't select a gallery within smugmug either. I can navigate the site, just not choose a gallery, using both Firefox and IE7.

Unable to open many of my galleries
Many of my galleries won't open, the browser just times out. I can see my home page, can open a category and can open some galleries. But others just timeout.

    Here's one example that won't open: http://jfriend.smugmug.com/gallery/353444.

Others are very, very slow to open. Others are speedy to open.

Hop 1 is your gateway, hop 2 is the neighborhood hub/plant/whatever the cable folks call it. It's most certainly a Comcast issue, as you shouldn't be getting over 1000ms right out of the gate. You might try rebooting your cablemodem before calling them up if you haven't done so already.

The 'tad' delay is actually the hop from Virginia to California, which is normal from what I've measured.

I'm looking into tweaking some of our routing to see if I can't get folks in the midwest to come directly out rather than heading east first.

Otherwise, as you said, the traceroute looks ok.

I've been seeing some sad performance in the Bellsouth service area, which I had hoped would clear up today. They might be still having issues? ne_nau.gif

As I originally stated no doubt a comcast issue, it will pass so its not worth a phone call, to darn late to deal with it now. But it still seems a number of use can't access individual galleries including me. Any status on that?

Yeah, that's the weird thing about this. I can get to my front page no problem and into categories, but click a gallery and it hangs and hangs. Opens maybe one in ten times if I'm lucky.

I'm looking folks, but at the moment, I'm able to pull up galleries and things look just fine from a systems standpoint. Could you please post examples as to what is or is not loading?

I did receive reports that Level 3 (which is in a few traceroutes posted above, even ones that look good) is having issues, but it appears their routes have been pulled while they troubleshoot. I've seen their route advertisement vary on and off for the last 48 hours or so, but haven't gotten much info as to what problems they are experiencing.

I'll have to defer to Support Hero's at this point, I need to go prep for maintenance.

Many of my galleries won't open, the browser just times out. I can see my home page, can open a category and can open some galleries. But others just timeout.

    Here's one example that won't open: http://jfriend.smugmug.com/gallery/353444.

Others are very, very slow to open. Others are speedy to open.

Man, it's a pain when you take a brand new thread on an issue that's completely different in character from a previous day's issue and has four other users chiming in on with the same problem and lump them into the same thread with something from the day before and then chalk it up to a Comcast issue when I don't even have Comcast. I had to use search to find my own post because you moved it.

I'm pretty darn sure there was a problem with Smugmug earlier. I could get to some of my galleries and not others. I had a clean tracert. It was consistent which galleries worked fine and which ones didn't. It's pretty hard for that kind of problem to not be at Smugmug or Amazon.

The troublesome galleries are working now.

I agree, different problem obviously. I just ran a new trace route and it is perfect after I finished my upload to smugmug. The galleries also appear to be working again. Something happened.

Ouch John, I'm terribly sorry I upset you. I moved your post, and I emailed you with the moved thread. I'm sorry you didn't get the mail.
