Very true for someone whom has been doing it as long as you andrew at your level but i can castrate a calf faster than you can spit...i was doing it from 8. Put someone there whom has never done it & i bet they would like an example.

Its like speach for a baby...they will imitate to learn. I just have no photography experience so i need to look over someones sholder the same way as i asked you your IS onthe lens.

Andrew how do these lenses (ie 300/400mm L type stuff) cope with say a bike coming staright at you down a straight at 180 mph in good strong light ?

I can understand fast panning but the constant change in focal length targeting the bike puzzles me.

AI uses adaptive focussing, so if you depress the shutter button half way, and then shoot it judges by using contrasts and algorithms and voodoo, the ability maintain focus.

I don't have my programmed this way, but you can within the 1D and when using lenses such as the 70-200 and up create a personal setting whereby once focus locks on it will shoot automatically.

However, I'm not the expert on why or how these cameras work...I know all the fundamentals, but there are functions on the 1D and 1DMK2 that I haven't explored..

You're referring to AI Servo, right? Since there are two AI modes: AI Servo and AI Focus. AI Servo is predictive focus tracking. As I understand it, AI Focus automatically switches from One Shot to AI Servo when it detects motion...is that correct?

    According to my 20D manual...
    About Predictive AF:
If the subject approaches or tretreats from the camera at a constant rate, the camera tracks the subject and predicts the focusing distance immediately before the picture is taken. This is for obtaining correct focus at the moment of exposure.

    • When the AF point selection is automatic, the camera first uses the center AF point to focus. During autofocusing, if the subject moves away from the center AF point, focus tracking continues as long as the subject is covered by another AF point.
    • With a manually selected AF point, the selected AF point will focus track the subject.
ah...and here's the answer to my question above:
AI Focus AF for Automatic Switching of AF Mode
AI Focus AF switches the AF mode from One-shot AF to AI Servo AF automatically if the still subject starts moving. After the subject is focused in the One-shot AF mode, if the subject starts moving, the camera will detect the movement and change the AF mode automatically to AI Servo AF.
Weeeee! It's amazing what you can learn when you RTFM. :jose

It just seems pretty trippy that it could do that with an object approaching dead on at a speed like that.

I live in Austin (northside, Cedar Park). I'd love to meet some of you guys when you are in town. Feel free to shoot me a PM or email. I can help with directions, places to eat, etc. And if any of you guys have very long lenses you will want to check out the Llano bald eagles.
