Hi Y'all,

I forgot to mention that if anyone wants to ship their equipment to the shoot they can have it shipped to my house. PM me if you wish to do this.

Hi Y'all,

Bad news, god news

The folks at NASA have rescheduled the shuttle launch to 2/7. This means that the MI NWR will be closed from 2/4-2/7. Fortunately we have other shooting locations to fill in with during the closure.

The good news is that we can shoot the shuttle launch.

If you haven't made your room reservations make them now!!! The availability of rooms will srop like a rock and their prices will soar.

We can hope they scrub it again. Don't like the FL weather..wait 15 minutes. Maybe they'll discover a problem with the waste removal equipment and scrub the flight for a month.

Don't they know they have to pass these things by you first Harry? Well that kind of sucks but isn't the end of the world. I'm really only going to Florida for your BBQ, the rest is just a bonus rolleyes1.gif.

I gotta tell you Nick that february down here is a bear to schedule. You have the Daytona 500 later in the month and you have Valentine's Day on the 14th. The first week and a half is the only time you have that doesn't conflict. Now NASA could have picked a number of days that would have had minimal impact on us. The 7th is probably the worst day they could have picked. :pissed

On the bright side a shuttle launch is a real party day down here. The site I usually shoot from has a Tiki bar and a restaurant that makes excellent burgers. We will just get there early, stake out our ground, and shoot the launch. The folks watching the launch are usually a better photo op than the launch itself. If they insist on screwing with our schedule we will just have to have us a launch party. beer.gif

Never been near or seen a shuttle launch, ('cept early ones on TV) so that would make the week pretty memorable for me.

If MINWR is closed for that many days, maybe Gatorland or somewhere else will fit in? Will the sunrise boat cruise still be on the 7th? Wonderful that you are right there on location and prepared with alternate ideas for us all, Harry! :D:Dthumb.gif I do appreciate it!

Its not a real problem. We have other sites to shoot. I don't think the boat ride will be affected. Here's a few shots I got from an earlier launch

Off topic - Nikon Cafe
This is a bit off topic, but I don't know where else to ask.

What's happened to the Nikon Cafe today? Is the site down? I remember seeing something about server changes, but didn't expect it would be down this long.

They said that they had some major work to do. I would expect them to be back up in the next day or so.

Hi Y'all,

Here's our semi-schedule as it stands now.

First day, Sunday, 2/3 - The west coasters will do their thing. I'll meet the Space Coast contingent at 6:30 AM at the IHOP by the motel (its right of exit 215 of US 95). We will focus on the MINWR as this will be the last day its open until after the 2/7 shuttle launch. I will also be available to guide any folks who arrive earlier than 2/3

Second Day, Monday, 2/4 We will meet at the IHOP again and shoot at the Viera Wetlands that day.

Third Day, Tuesday, 2/5 I won't be shooting that day as I have to prep for the BBQ. I'll meet our happy band at the IHOP again and get you started towards the Orlando Wetlands or the Viera Wetlands depending on the whims of the assembled shooters. I would suggest ending the shooting day at Viera as the V. Wetlands are a short drive from my house.

From 6-9 PM I'll be hosting a welcome BBQ for any who are interested. We will be serving a ham and smoked turkey breasts, burgers and hot dogs will be available also. There's no charge for the BBQ. Assorted salads, side dishes, and dessert will be available also. We will be serving soft drinks and Corona. If you want anything else bring it along.

My address is 5960 Herons Landing Drive. To get there you get off exit 191 of US 95. If you are going South you make a left (right if you're headed North) turn off the exit onto Wickham Rd. You take Wickham for 3 traffic lights. At the 3rd light you make a left turn onto Murrell Rd (that's right by the Pizza Uno). You take Murrell for 4 lights. At the 4th light you make a right turn unto Viera Blvd (Walgreens is at the corner). You go down Viera until you hit Herons Landing Drive The second left, right after the Grace Viera Church. Make a left turn onto Herons Landing Drive and just follow the house numbers until you get to my place.

Wednesday, 2/6 - In the morning we will meet at the IHOP and head out to the Avian Center. It will be easier if we could keep the number of vehicles to a minimum for this trip. Anyone who would rather pass on this trip will have the option of shooting at any of the local sites.

Thursday 2/7 will be our hectic day. In the morning we will meet at the IHOP and head out for the pontoon boat ride. I will pass on the boat because this is also the day of the shuttle launch and I'll be heading on up to Titusville to stake out a viewing spot for us. The shuttle launch is scheduled for 2:17 PM. We will meet at a burger joint called NEW York New York. It is a restaurant with bathrooms and the serve up a mean burger and home made potato chips. There's also a tiki bar outside. Their address is 5401 Riveredge Rd, Titusville (right off of US 1). They charge $10 per vehicle to park so again we will want to take as few cars up there as possible. Shuttle launches are a real zoo here and traffic gets very heavy so you want to get to our spot as soon as possible before it gets too crazy and/or all the parking spots are filled. Bring a blanket or folding chair to sit on if possible.

Finally that evening I have booked us the private room at Charlie and Jake's for 7 PM that day. I tried to change the date after the launch was announced but all the other dates were booked. C&Js is an outstanding BBQ/micro brewery and we have had a number of fine meals there on past MI shoots.

The rest of the shoot is open and we will make it up as we go along. Additional possible shooting sites include Gatorland in Orlando (the light is better in the afternoon) and Sebastian Inlet.

What I need y'all to do to make it easier for me is to e-mail or PM the dates you will attend, your interest in any of the scheduled events, if you will attend the BBQ, the meal at Charlie and Jakes, etc. If you could also include your cell # that would help with communications during the shoot.

My home # is 31-639-7302 and my cell # is 917-703-3590. If you have any questions please feel free to PM, e-mail or call me

MI V... RV's?
Sounds like a great week, Harry. Thanks for all the prep work you are doing!

Anyone else staying in an RV for the week? Or staying in Rockledge or nearby? I will be staying at Space Coast RV park (The RV park is just off Rt 95 exit 195, about 20 miles south of the IHOP) for the week and if anyone else will be close by it would make sense for us to share driving. I have a PU that can take 4 comfortably with lots of room in the back, too.

PM if this sounds like something that would useful.

This is the info on the west coast portion of the shoot from Jose Suro who is coodinating that part of the shoot.

Hi All,
A quick rundown on the conditions for the West Coast/Ft De Soto area.

Although I never trust long range forecasts, the 10-day guess has 60% chance of showers for Friday, followed by 30% on Saturday. Too early to tell about the rest and these numbers are very "iffy".

The tides will be what we call "two tide days" from the 31st to the 5th, with incoming tides all day starting at around 3:00AM - perfect for morning waders. Afternoons will see water too high for waders except maybe at East Beach.

The ponds at Tierra Verde are good pretty much all day for flight shots and ducks, with the afternoons best for Egret pass shooting. The Ospreys will come to the pond each day around 4-4:30pm to wash - a good opportunity as well. I recommend this shoot for the afternoon of the 31st - weather permitting.

Eagles are best early in the morning and through about 11am. Giving about three or four flight shot chances with food in their talons and as many perched ones as you want. Clear weather is best. Chances for other birds like parakeets, woodpeckers and harriers are good there as well. It is private property so we will have to plan this carefully.

Owls are hit and miss right now. There was a fire at Ft. D. where the GHO hangs out and I haven't seen it since. I also had trouble locating the Barred Owl at Chestnut. Chestnut is a 35-minute drive from Ft. D.

The meadowlarks and other fence posting stuff are south across the skyway bridge about 40-minutes away. Very early in the morning is best and there is a lot of driving involved.

We should plan leaving early on the 5th to shoot Lakeland for Limpkins and gallinules if you all want to.

My numbers:

Home: 727-864-1154
Cell: 727-644-5835

All the Best!

Hi Y'all,

The Avian Center's address is 323 W. Lester Road Apopka, FL 32712. Our appointment there is for 9 AM on Wednesday 2/6. It should be about an hour's drive from the motel so we should leave around 7:30 from the IHOP.

The boat ride on Thursday will start at 6:30 AM from its launch site off the Pineda Causeway. Once we get the info on the exact launch site we will get it out to y'all.

The Nikon Cafe has a bunch of posts also.

The shoot just ended yesterday and most of the shooters are making their ways home to begin their processing work which may take longer than the actual shoot. I have over 3,000 shots to process and most of the other shooters took more shots than I did.

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

<does some math figuring out Frank's rate of fire... 12 per sec...x 5 minute bursts x 4599 times daily...x 14 days>

I think Frank wins. Probably fired off 500 gigs the first week. :ivar I remember standing between Fran and Andreas as they fired their machines. It was so funny I had to stop shooting and laugh. Stereophonic machineguns. What a riot.

Harry... why did you shoot so many shots? I fit all my images from MI5 on 3 DVDs (backup copies of course). What's that come to with an 8.2 mp camera...about 1200-1400 shots. Guess I better try harder next time. :D

Thanks for setting this up again....and Linda for putting up with all of us.
