First Day with the D2H

Hi You'll,

I hooked my 300mm/f4 lens and 1.4 TC to my brand new new D2H and headed on over to the Wetlands to get acquainted with the camera. As with all new cameras there's a learning curve so I wasn't trying to get award winning shots, just trying to meld with the new equipment.

The main reason for upgrading to the D2H was its larger buffer and faster focusing so I could get better action and flight shots.

I started slowly

Since its Egret Fest

I slowly moved into action shots

tried a flight shot

Finally on a smaller bird, a shot I wouldn't even try with the D100

No award winners today but at least all the shots I blew today were because of me and not the camera.

I guess an old man cant keep up with the speed of his new cam:D
Nice shots Harry and Im sure we will see some killer shots in the near future

Looks good Harry. Does it focus any faster, or is just hype?
With the larger buffer, are you going to need faster CF cards?
Just wondering.

Hey John,

It was hard getting used to its speed. I would click off 3 shots and stop before I remembered that I wasnt shooting with the D100. The most I did in a row was 9.

I will need a few more hours with it before I'm comfortable with it but its looking good right now.

Hey Dave,

It definitely focuses faster than the D100. It has 11 focus points compared to the D100's 5. I was able to focus in on the Grackles (the last bird) very easily. I never could have done that with the D100.

I go a 2mb 80x card and used it today w/o a hiccup. When I switched to my 1 gig 32x card I didn't notice a difference. I was amazed at how many shots I could get off with the D2H.

I am enjoying the new camera but having the abilkity to get more than 3 shots off in a sequence will atke some getting used to. Glad you enjoyed the post.

Nice work with the new camera. I especially liked #3, shown above, the best.

i'm enjoying it while i can, hard to believe i'm turning 43 at yosemite this year. my oldest is starting college in the fall! cripes

Andy, enjoy it while you can. However, don't worry, age will be forgotten as long as you enjoy what you are doing. I'm 61 and pushing 62 hard. My youngest is 30 and my oldest is just two years behind you.

Enjoy Yosemite and celebrate your birthday in its grandeur. It would be hard to find a better place to celebrate your birthday by doing what you enjoy doing.

I wish I could have joined all of you in Yosemite. However, I will be there for the entire following weekend. I will be traveling on my motorcycle (Gold Wing) and towing a trailer with all my gear. I will leave Alabama on May 8th and arrive in Yosemite on May 13th after stops at Mesa Verde NP in Colorado and Arches NP in Utah. I will leave Yosemite on May 16th to head to Ontario, California to begin the 2005 Run For The Wall to Washington, DC and subsequent return to home in Alabama.

Glad to hear that new camera is working out well. I hope to graduate from the 300D in the future but not till I run her though all of the ropes.

Thats a great shot of that turtle. I can see from your shot and Pf's shot that I'm going to have to come up with some new turtle shots to keep up with you all.

Hey Tim,

I know I'm not that old but you have to consider Andy here. If he didn't have my age to hawk me about he would have to come up with something new. The poor lad's circuits are overloaded as it is now. He would have a meltdown if he had to think of something else. Give the kid a break.

That's the feature that made me buy a dslr. Being able to take shots of a motorbike / car / bird in motion is addictive. I set the 20d to medium files because I'm so trigger happy it doubles the capacity of my 1g cards. If I had a D2H / 1dmk2 I would need to be sponsored by sandisk

Not being a Nikon guy (for no particular reason) my first thought is...is 4mp enough?

If it is...I bet editing and storing and transferring are less tedious.

What approximate size are your raw files?

THe 4 MP on the D2H are more than enough. Around 3 weeks ago I had 17 Nikonians down for a visit most of them were shooting the D2H and were using the same lens set-up I do (300mm + 1.4TC). Their shots were cropped as much as mine from the D100 and their's were crisper, sharper and had better color. Ron Reznick, my guru, had been using the D2H as his prime camera for the last two years and getting marvelous results.

My 2 Gig CF card will hold around 321 uncompressed RAW shots. The file sizes are 6.04 MB.

ginger (That is the length lens I use) Or used when I had birds. Desperately shot a red winged blackbird finally. Sad.:cry

And the tide was so far out I was expecting a Tsunami. No birds and no water, isn't that indicative of something bad.

Right now mine is on single shots, but I am going to put it back on the continuous. When my camera is on that, it is about impossible to take just one shot. I push the trigger and I have a bunch of shots in sequence, never want to delete any. One might be clearer. But I sure go through my cards fast.

Won't need it unless you send my birds back.
