Digital awards?

I am not sure if this has been covered, I tried searching and did not come up with anything, maybe I am using the wrong keywords...so if this has been covered I apologize.

I think it would be cool, since we are doing mini challenges and going away from LPS and going to more challenges and are looking for smaller prizes and what not to offer people. Maybe we could offer people digital awards that they could put into their avatar section or their sig. Just so they can have a little more bragging rights :-) I have seen this on other forums and think it would be cool on this forum.

personally when i see good work from a forum member i never forget them...

not a bunch...one photo site that has them is photozo.com, they are very clean and is just one for any award or contest won, and does not take up much space.

I would not call it a "I love me wall", that is like saying that any athlete that gets a medal/award should not display them, most would not forget about a gold medal olympist but yet they still get a medal.

i could see something fun like that, attaching something to ones avatar indicating a latest contest winner, like carrying the olympic torch and passing it on to the the next round winner....

Yeah, just something small...I agree with you that there should not be a whole bunch of different awards to where it looks like a very decorated war veteran, but just one that says they have won a contest of some sort it could even have a number that changes if they have won more then one. which would be very easy to do and would not clutter up anything more.

I like you idea of having one that says they are the most recent winner...so there could be two. which would not take up much room and clutter like you were talking about.

something thats passed on one to another would be more of a fun route....

something like the privilege of wearing doctorITs glasses on their avatar for two weeks....:D

Fair enough, I do not see it as pompous, not sure how being proud that your photo was chosen as the winner of a contest (considering the skill level that is on this board) and you getting a little something for it to add to your avatar section...but hey to each his own. If I won awards/medals I would display them in my house, but maybe you would not.

Would love to hear others thoughts on this as well...

What is wrong with getting a pat on the back sometimes...it makes you feel like it was all worth while. I don't know about anyone else, but there are times as a photographer/artist I get depressed and it is that one comment that gives me that perk to "carry on" sort to speak, and brings a smile to this face, it doesn't mean I'm getting all puffed up about anything, it is just nice that someone took the time to notice your hard work and efforts!

Thank you, this is my thinking about it as well...

For example, the mini BIF challenge...there is no prizes but it would be nice to give a little digital award to the winner, so they have something...

I am glad that someone else likes this idea...I am surprised this post has not gotten more action...

Interesting, what pages? I would like to see the response...

Edit* I found them...I can see he was kind of rude, but it did not seem to me that he dismissed the digital award idea, he did not even touch on it.

I think for this to work is that we would have to get a lot people on board and then present the idea to the "big wigs" in charge and have them ok the idea...but there has been 3 responses to this and I do not think that will be enough to sway the judgement :-) oh well, maybe it will gain traction after some time, maybe not.

See here is the funny thing though. So a couple people on this thread want digital awards and so you go over and try to push it on another thread and then question why you can't have it your way.

If you simply read the rules and abidded by them it wouldn't be an issue would it?

Here are the rules that Dave set up for the contest he set up.

MINI CHALLENGE #1: BIF's

Mini Challenge #1 - BIF's (Birds In Flight)

This challenge will close on Saturday, May 10th at midnight.
Any post that has a date of May 11th is ineligible.
At some time on the 11th, I'll post the winner in a new thread titled: <<< MINI CHALLENGE #1 Winner >>>

This mini challenge is about the capture of birds in flight.

1. Have fun sharing and seeing what others share!

2. The host supplies a topic and you post 1-3 images. The host judges the winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd) and is not eligible to enter.
The 1st place winner then chooses the next topic, judges the winner and passes on the baton to the new champion.

3. Any photo you’ve taken is eligible, regardless of when taken or camera used.

4. Any amount of post-processing is allowed. However, it is helpful if you list your camera and lens along with your photo.
You may comment on other contestant's images. If you want someone to leave you some criticism, put an asterisk (*) next to the title of the image.

Guidelines:

1. When posting your picture in this thread, change the Subject of your post to display your picture title.

2. Either embed your image in the thread or, if you must, supply a link to it. Keep in mind, however, most people don't want to click to open photos hosted elsewhere (i.e. on your website).

3. Also try and resize your photos prior to posting so they're sized appropriately for viewing without having to scroll (~800 pixels on the longest side works best.)

If you want to do digital awards there is nothing preventing you from creating your own contest, creating the rules you want, and handing out whatever awards you want.

Not sure why you are harping on me...I did not push any awards in any other thread...so please do not come after me about it.

I am not going to create them, cause it does not seem like anyone is really interested in it...so why waste the time and effort, this is the whole reason for this post is to see if there was interest, there was not much at this time, so that leads me to beleive not to many people would care...simple as that.

Just pointing out that Dave had clearly defined rules for his contest. Yet someone complained about it in that thread and then again here.

This is exactly what has been going on for the past year and a half with LPS or any other contest.

As far as the awards I say go for it- but don't contribute to the problem by not following someone else's rules. It is not a bad idea but you are probably going to have to do it yourself to start with.

We created contests in the lules of the LPS semi final weeks, Paul created the day in the life- and Dave has created a contest. Just how it is- if you have an idea you can most likely run with it but you have to step up and do it.

It's a learning community when it comes to photography. And very much so, look at all the critique and self-made mini challenges we've had!

Unfortunately, as you have observed, as soon as the discussion of competition, awards, etc, comes up, the mob makes itself known. You all know my stance on this (die LPS, die!!!)

Ooh! I think it's maybe going a bit far to put interested, positive suggestions and requests openly expressed in a friendly way in a public forum in the same category as the now legendary LPS PMs

Would you rather all correspondence which has something to offer in the way of improvement to forums be criminalised?

DGrin has the chance to be unique among forums in being inviting, welcoming, appreciative and responsive to feedback on most kinds of matters. The infamous LPS PMs have been made into scapegoats to carry the responsibility of some shambles in the LPS rules as published, and a failure to make it clear that no correspondence about the results of the contest would be entered into. That aside, in public forums here registered members have, to date, every right to express their concerns, disapprovals and disagreements. Until, that is, totalitarianism of your kind and others' prevails. Drink to that?

On the subject of the digital "awards" idea, I think it's a good one, and it kept popping into my mind the whole 14 pages of that contest suggestion thread. It's something carefree, and funny, doesn't cost a cent and would be hugely silly to argue about.

"Carefree" being the key word. I'd love if we had some people who can make some of the goofy little .gif animations for awards (I'd be willing to try, but can't promise anything decent!), and they could be passed around as a given "title" were taken.

If I were to win the BIF contest (not that I'm going to

) I'd love having a little avatar depicting my smiley-face panning a big lens at some birds like a machinegun. And it'd be sweet if I got to have it for a while and then pass my "crown" on to another great shooter of BIFs sometime down the road.

Hmmmm, I started a little challenge up to get people to use this part of the forum, share some of their older
shots to show off a little, get some conversion going, take folks minds off of the LPS and stop waiting for a new
challenge, and I get to be referred to as rude.

I started that challenge, but before I did, I started a thread asking what people thought about a mini challenge.
I got exactly 2 responses to that thread.
So based on those two responses, I borrowed some rules that have worked for 166 mini challenges on a different
board, and started it up.

Shortly after that, a few people thought that they knew much more than stupid old dave and started to inject their
thoughts on what I should do. I of course responded to the posts, explaining that the rules have been made, and that's
how it was going to work.

Then one person decided that wasn't good enough, and wanted to push the issue further.
My response was short, to the point, and I even added a little smiley to it to show that there
was no ill will intended upon my response. For this, I'm now being called rude.

If I wanted to be rude, I could be. I could write a book on it. If there was a colony of rude people,
I would be their king. Is this point clear?

I have no response to the Digital Awards. I am NOT a moderator here. I'm just a guy that posts a few
shots, that I took, and think that they turned out OK.
I don't have the power to put anything in anyone's avatar. I'm not a programer or a designer that I can
make up little awards.
I am construction worker, a Steamfitter by trade.
If you want some kind of an award, make one up yourself, World's Greatest Photographer of ______________.
Hand it out to whoever you'd like. But it's still not going to be in their avatar.

Did you notice that the name of this was changed from 'Dgrin mini challenge' to Davev's mini challenge' ?
That's because the mods here didn't want anything to do with this, because of threads like these.

I thought I was helping out, looks like I was wrong again.

Dave I have no issues with anything you said, I did not see how you were rude to anyone and you have every right not to respond or to respond how you see fit.

I thought your BIF was great, I even entered it and you granted me HM, which was super generous for my humble photo.

Maybe I am at fault for even starting this thread, but in reality I did not say anything bad about you or that you were rude, anything can be taken as rude especially on a forum basis. I wanted to see where in the thread someone had been rude to Neil, but I did not see it, maybe it could have been taken otherwise.

I apologize if I came off as being angry at anyone or trying to be anything but friendly, this thread did go off topic with a couple of posts, but nothing I wrote was directed at you nor was it negative, so I do not feel I should have to be the bearer of that. But I do think if someone wants to vent and it is only taking up a few posts, oh well let them vent. You are more then welcome to be angry at them, but I do not believe that I should put to jury here.

I appreciate you taking the time to explain your point of view, I think you have a valid point and agree with you 100% and do not think you were wrong about starting your mini challenge. Again I apologize if you felt I was condemning you or criticizing you, that was not my intention, so I apologize.

I would really like to get this back on topic, some people think this is a good idea and maybe it will catch on if I put something together. I will work on something if some one wants to try their hands at creating a digital award go for it and just PM me and I will give you my email and we will see what you come up with and figure out an award and get a challenge going and then hand out the award.

You are pretty good at self righteousness, too.

But I challenge you for king of that, because I'm going to indulge in some of my own (no contest on rudeness though)

It's easily seen looking at your challenge thread that I was trying to make a positive contribution to what you had begun. I was C&Cing entries and generally cheering you and the entrants. My suggestions about digital awards and voting were just that, suggestions, and were put in a manner in keeping with my other posts to the thread.

You ignored my contributions, both there and here, and responded only to my suggestion about a poll in the thread, and did so in a high handed manner, the smiley notwithstanding. I'm sure you know, but when someone is obviously on your side and wanting to add to your endeavor the polite thing to do is at least to thank them. This was missing both there and here. Why? Because you say so? As it turned out the challenge, while having some stunning entries, was dead in terms of community involvement and spirit. I still admire what you did, however.

The message I got from you, both from your ignoring of my involvement and spirit and the one liner shooting down my suggestion of a voting poll, was, euphemistically, go away. Call that not rude? (In fact the words I used here were "too close to rude for my comfort". So I didn't actually say you were rude. BP please also note.)
