Anyone gonna see The Dark Knight in IMAX?

I'm hearing the key scenes filmed with IMAX cameras are the best IMAX ever. So next Friday I'm gonna find a Bay Area IMAX theater, like in Dublin to take it in.

What about the rest of youz? You gonna be satisfied with fewer pixels and a smaller enlargement in a regular theater, or does your love of photography translate to having to find you some IMAX?

Any Bay Area peeps interested in hooking up for a showing?

    Absolutely!
If I was on the left coast, I'd join you. As is, we will definitely see this one in IMAX. Loved "Batman Begins" and it's been a long time since I've been excited about seeing a movie in a theater.

How does that work? I have not seen a regular movie in IMAX, will the image grow in size to fit the IMAX screen, then go back to normal widescreen? There is an IMAX theater not too far away, so I may try to catch it there. I hope it is as good as the last one. The previews look excellent. thumb.gif

As longs as they don't do the 3-D business. I saw a movie in IMAX 3-D and didn't think it was very good quality, and the 3-D a gimmick.

Yup, I'll be going to see this one on the IMAX screen downtown...

only I have to wait another week for it to open down here. So much for being 15 hours in the future. umph.gif

I've heard it's better than the last one.

Here's the way it should work:

"In 2002, Imax unveiled its new DMR (Digital Re-Mastering) process, whereby 35mm and digital (24p) films could be blown up to Imax 15-perf/70mm film format. The format was possibly in answer to the outrageous practice of some commercial theatres running unmasked 35mm prints on their Imax screens and boasting "enhanced presentation." This was not only of poor presentation quality, but audiences going into the theatre expecting an Imax presentation were being sold a lie. Some theatres hyped that certain movies, like “Gladiator” (2000) were on the giant Imax screen. True, but the image from a 35mm was dim, grainy and only filled a portion of the large screen. At least with DMR prints, high-quality 70mm prints were struck using Imax’s proprietary software and stringent quality control."

Yeah, you're right, it's technically not an Imax screen, but the Cineplex does have a 25m screen - way bigger than normal.

It looks like they shot 20 minutes in IMAX and will reformat it to 35mm. I wonder how the rest of the movie will look on IMAX, maybe the rest uses the technique you posted?

    more here.

They have already sold $2 million in IMAX tickets alone.

Here is a list of IMAX theaters that will be showing it.

I'm a member of the music dep't on the Dark Knight. You're gonna love the IMAX version—wish I could join you. The film is amazing and everybody knew it the first time they watched it. I can tell you, the score is even more fab in the IMAX version. Cheer for a Smugger/Grinner when the credits roll!

I'm going as well. I can't wait to see Heath Ledger's version of the Joker.

The film switches back and forth between letterboxed 35mm aspect ratio and the IMAX aspect ratio. The screen's so big it barely registers.

Oh my gosh I loved that movie. bowdown.gifbowdown.gifbowdown.gif The IMAX theater made it just amazing, but even the IMAX wasn't as awe-inspiring as Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker.

Such a great cast, and Pindy, we loved the score. We're going back to see it again.

How did they do the 35mm on an IMAX screen so that it went top to bottom? Did they lose some from the sides?

    Hey Baldy!

Thanks for the seats (and for driving). I agree with you on Ledger's performance as the Joker. Outstanding indeed.
