The initial online reviews of the 50D has been interesting to say the least.
Someone compared it with a 40D at the store and the noise level was about the same, then a Swedish posters compared it with a 40D and found the noise about the same but the colors different. They subsequently compared it against a 5D and found the 5D to be less noisy than the 50D. Now the latest comparison of the 50D vs the 5D show the noise level and IQ about the same.

I've posted a link to the three threads in the order I mentioned below.

I downloaded the original sized files and looked at all three "synchronized" in Canon's zoombrowser so I can see all three images at 100% crop and move them around in sync to look at various areas.

The ISO 3200 shot with no NR does show some fine speckled noise pattern. The overall amount of noise is not too objectionable, but I wish for two things, another body like a 40D or a 5D to put the noise level into a context and maybe a shadow area where chroma noise really shows up.

Anyway, with 5/20 NR, there is generally pretty good control of luminescence noise and fair control of chroma noise. The letters in the book are very clean but the detail on the stuffed bear (not much in the no NR image anyway) is all pretty much smeared. So are other very fine detail like the grain of wood in the cabinet by the bear.

With the 10/20 NR shot, I think you are starting to lose more detail as the image looks less crisp, but chroma noise is better. I wonder how it would look with about 5 Luminescence NR and about 8 Chroma NR.

Andy, in terms of over all IQ, noise level, tonal gradation, dynamic range, and how responsive the RAW image is to processing, what are your feelings about the 50D? I'm thinking about upgrading from the 30D to either a 50D or a 5D. I'm thinking the 5D would give better IQ but the 50D may offer more features/build quality. I'd like to go to the 50D but not necessarily at the cost of IQ.

I didn't download them but just viewed 'as is' posted by Andy. On the first 'No NR' one the noise jumped out at me in the wood over the bear (slight shadow area), the face of the book to the left of the bear, the blue spine of the book on its side in the upper right corner and a little over the globe.

By the third one the bear detail is lost and the noise mainly jumps out at me from the face of the book to the bear's left.

But nitpick nitpick it does seem. ISO 3200 @ f/11? Assuming that is the 50 f/1.2 you used Andy, I would consider that to be very acceptable.

So I will buy one. But sell this one to Nik before he :splat

So.. what does this mean for us? Canon seems pissed and playing catch up. It's going to be interesting what they come up with.

Apart from the 5D2 image sensor, it doesn't appear that Canon Japan is doing much to win back the market. headscratch.gif

Nice, now can you magically grab a 5DMkII and repeat this game?

Also, question, Andy: Why is the 50 1.2/L on that body in the picture of you holding the 50D? I thought you returned yours and kept your 50 1.4? If things have changed since you originally wrote your 50 1.2/L review, you should update it to reflect why, because I'd like to know why (and so would others I'd guess).

    Very cool thumb.gif

Since this thread is about the 50D I have to ask; Do you think this shot would have been less good with let's say the 30D?

    Yes. You must upgrade immediately....j/k.

Not sure how to answer the question. I think the tonal range and quality of the image are very nice. Whether that can be said for the 30d, don't know.

    Question for Andy et. al.
I have the XSi and have been waiting to see how the 50D is in the field. I am strongly considering adding the body to my gear. Based upon your tests thus far, would you recommend this camera to me.

    Thanks,
    Dan

Here is a nice review/comparison of the 50D vs the 40D.
I agree with the reviewer in that there doesn't seem to be much difference between the two.

I guess the good news is that 50% increase in MP's with same noise level and the bad news is unasked for increase in MP and no improvement in noise control.

headscratch.gif I'm not seeing that. I'm seeing at least a stop improvement in noise.

    Tom,
it's all subjective. I hear it each time.
50D is the same as 40D which is the same as 30D which is the same as 20D. PS CS4 is the same as CS3 which is the same as CS2 which is the same as CS...
It's all simply a line of reasoning behind the primeval gut feeling of whether you want to upgrade or not. Every person chooses for him/herself. The rest is BS.

    Andy,
Are you finding that there is less noise than a 40D straight out of the camera? Or does the 50D respond better to processing and NR, giving a quieter image?

    Nik,
Now that you have both a 40D and a 50D, let see some examples.

Andy, assuming this is with no NR in DPP, it seems to have better results thatn the book shelf shot from the other day. Only jumps out at me in the grayish t-shirt, and even then not bad for ISO 3200.
