    First impressions
    • thumb.gif Much better screen with much fancier menus
    • thumb.gif MUCH improved LiveView - including live focusing, live histogram(finallyclap.gif ), dedicated activation button, and programmable FUNC button (which I set to Liveview settings)
    • :cry One less custom set (Be Gone, Silly Modes, Be Gone! rolleyes1.gif )
    • thumb.gif Takes all 40D accessories (battery, L-plates, grip)
    • thumb.gif Yes, ISO 12,800 images are noisy, but you can still take an image even if you can hardly see the target eek7.gifclap.gif
Cleaning it up in DPP/ACR/PS should not be problem
    • mwink.gif and, yes, it's 15mp, not 10
    Will continue to play! deal.gif

    Thanks Nik.
I don't see much difference at 800, but I think the 50D is a small amount quieter at ISO 1600.

    Tom,
    you're welcome!
I think difference becomes bigger towards 12,8K mwink.gif
I was seriously impressed that I can get something I can easily clean later. We're probably not talking about creating a masterpiece, but a possibility of getting a decent shot in a *very* dark environment. Bonfires, nightclubs, concerts, museums, weddings...

Firstly, thanks to Andy and Nikolai for taking the time to post the images!

What are your subjective opinions so far? I know Andy said that he's seeing a stop improvement - is that on high ISOs (1600/3200), or generally through the range?

Nikolai: you said, for example, concerts... you don't have any example shots, do you? For me, this would be one of the areas I'd be keen to use it at - I tended to shoot ISO 1600-3200 on my 20D (before it died), and even at f1.8-2, this wasn't always quite enough. 3200 was also a lot of work to reduce the noise without losing too much detail, sometimes.

Can anyone who has used the 20D and the 50D (and, if possible, the 40D as well) comment on their comparative performance in this kind of environment - low-light, high-ISO?

As I said earlier on - I can pick up a 40D as the "free" replacement with the insurance money from the 20D. Alternatively, I can spent an additional £390 of my own money - ouch - to go for the 50D.... the real question for me is whether the high-ISO, low-light performance is good enough to justify this quite substantial injection of extra cash.

(Yep, I know it's 15Mpix as well, which is always nice - and the screen on the back is much higher-res... and so on... but £390 extra for those...?!)

    Thanks for your help everyone,

    Sunil

Sunil, dude, I only had it for half a day mwink.gif and a rather busy day at that.

However, considering even those meager samples I posted, I'd say 50D's low light performance is exceptional, and this is exactly concert (or theatre) situation. Yes, there is noise at 12,800 - but that's 12,800! eek7.gif With 40D you'll get as much at 3,200 deal.gif

All in all, improved speed (Digic4), extremely useful LiveView, much better low light performance, 50% increase in resolution and a finer screen/menus is definitely "yes for upgrade" for me.

I hope to come out with more samples after tonight.

Wonderful picture of a wonderful model.

But Nik, that look! If you are counting the days to Moab, she is counting the days til she lives far enough she doesn't have to do this anymore.

Of course that's better than some of things my 8 year old does when he sees my camera.

Andy, Nik, Ziggy, do you recommend the 50D? I'm using the XSi 450D and thinking of adding this body to my gear. Can I get an Amen? wings.gif

The Canon 50D looks to be an amazing camera and would make an excellent upgrade for the XSi/450D. Understand that the resulting files are going to be much larger so your computer may feel sluggish.

It's not a perfect camera by any means but it's a very good camera and, used properly, should provide very good results.

If you want to do it, and you have the means, go for it. thumb.gif

+1 +1 Amen to both of those. 15524779-Ti.gif

Files *are* huge (I'm seriously considering shizam's offer now). And it's driving me nuts to use bundled software. And it's not perfect. i.e. it won't take pictures for you all by itself.
But it's one helluva camera, so if you want to upgrade to an APC line - this is definitely something to consider.

Well, in that case I may have to buy a new computer as well rolleyes1.gif Seriously though, my current camera is 12.2 mp and the 50D is 15.x. Shouldn't be much of a difference, eh?

My 40D was 10mp, and while it it smaller than 12.2mp, but not by much.
Yet I'm feeling the difference, esp. after processing 400+ frames from last night...ne_nau.gif

Got mine yesterday. I downloaded the LR 2 Beta & DPP 3.5 on a PC laptop to take with me to process when in Moab. Oh and I charged the battery! thumb.gif
