Site Issue Dec 18th

edited December 21, 2008 in SmugMug Support
I hate to be a pain or a Gladys Kravitz about this, but the last couple days I've noticed very slow loading of photos. Typically, a page of thumbs would load in a few seconds, today it's about 10, sometimes the last one take fully another 10 sec. alone. I was viewing one in Original size, which usually would take 3 or 4 sec, and it took over a minute this morning.

I tested my own bandwidth before and after loading smug pages (and even once during, for kicks) and it's always around 8 Mbps. I'm just wondering if you're hearing this lately (Wed 12/17 or Thur 12/18)?
Thanks,
--Jim

    Hi Jim,

The site is running fast as usual for me. Such delays as you're seeing are usually connection related. Please run a speedtest and traceroute for us to start with.
    Go here:
    http://smugmug.speedtest.net
We are the Yellow San Jose pyramid. Please let us know what the results are.

Try these instructions to run a traceroute on a PC:
    http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/2959046
That will help us see if and where any problems may be.
Run the traceroute on www.smugmug.com and jimojimo.smugmug.com

Also let us know of some specific links to galleries that load slow for you. It depends on what addresses you use.

It's hardly working for me now. Lots of thumbails missing, images not loading and empty pages!

I'm having the same problem. I'm not able to proof orders.

When I try and look at any galleries they don't load or say the photos can't be found. That can't be a bandwidth problem.

I'm surfing the web and everything else is running lickety split.

My site is kaput, it says to go to the blog but there's nothing there.

I'm getting our friendly Smuggy "Temporary Service Interruption" image...

Is Amazon's cloud having issues again or is this a SmugMug issue???

(Not mad... yet - j/k - just curious)

so, uh...what happens to hotlinked pics when the site goes down? does that mean anything that's been hotlinked directly gets hosed too?

    Now completely down :-{
Looks like they've taken the site completely offline to fix whatever this issue is:

Everything on the web has been running s l o w the last few days. It reminds me of the dial up days of AOL and 9600 baud. I think all the kids are out of school and are clogging up the web...

Yup. See the empty boxes at the top of this page? Those are supposed to be images from the dgrin.smugmug.com gallery.

According to Amazon's status page (http://status.aws.amazon.com/), S3 (Simple Service Storage) is (and has been) operating normally, so it looks like this is SmugMug's problem.

    12/18/08 - Site outage

December 18, 2008 by Don MacAskill

We’re experiencing an internal problem with our systems that we’re still investigating, so as a precaution, we’ve had to take SmugMug offline. The problem appears to be related to our internal DNS servers (DNS is what translates ‘www.smugmug.com’ into an IP address that your computer understands). We’re hoping we can get it resolved quickly, we’re certainly working as hard as we can at fixing it.

Most of these are regularly scheduled weekly maintenance windows on Thursday nights.

That's actually pretty good for a site that's changing and growing as fast as SM. And then there's the millions of hacker attempts and malicious stuff we never even hear about. I think they do a really good job. I've had to run web sites before--it's definitely easier than it looks. thumb.gif

i didn't count the regularly sched'd times (except one, where there was a follow-up "whoops! it blowed up as i was finishing" or something).

don't get me wrong, i'm not saying that smugmug isn't doing a fantastic job, cause you guys really, truly are... smugmug is AWESOME and offers some of the raddest stuff i've seen online for us photogs.

i was just curious what the record uptime is. :)

you get used to high performance
smugmug is almost always up and running fine, you get so used to counting on it that any little hiccup is always a big surprise but everything is fine once again

this thread says that smugmug is back up and running but i'm still having trouble with my site... when i go to the "add photos" link on my homepage, the page doesn't load. i've tried waiting for 5 min or so for it to load. press ctrl, alt delete and says it's not responding. i don't have any other problems with any other sites being slow or anything, so i don't think it's on my end. is smugmug still down???? headscratch.gif

    thanks,
    Jo
