Stairways of SF: Yerba Buena Cove and Telegraph Hill
This Thanksgiving we weren't able to fly back to be with our familes, so we took advantage of the empty city and quiet streets to try something new. Fellow Dgrinner and good friend aktse lent me a (very locally popular) book about staircases in San Francisco, just chock full of great local history and hidden paths. There… -
Re: 3rd Party lenses vs. Nikon/Canons???
I think you are generally quite correct- Nikon and Canon know their equipment better, and are best able at maximizing things like color, autofocus speed, and *usually* sharpness. HOWEVER, the main use I see 3rd parties for, is "filling in the gaps". The best examples that come to mind are as follows: * Tokina 11-16 f/2.8… -
Re: color mode?
Hi Janis, It sounds like some simple questions but there has been volumes written on color management. Discovering the perfect formula is akin to finding the holy grail hidden in the back of your closet. But there are some things that will help starting off... RAW vs. PSD vs. JPEG: RAW captures are fairly close to straight… -
Re: Issue files to clients
The 240ppi only has relevance at the time of printing. If you wanted to print a 10x8 @240ppi, the image file would need to have pixel dimensions of 2400 x 1920 pixels (240ppi x 10inches ... and 240ppi x 8inches) If that 2400px x 1920px image was printed at 300ppi, it would produce a print of 8inches (2400/300) x 6.4inches… -
Re: Is this shallow DOF or something else?
Hi Snapper, I suspect you made this shot very close to the girls, resulting in a very narrow DOF around them. The wide aperture likely made the problem worse. Moving farther from your the subjects, and stopping down your aperture (say to F11), will greatly increase your DOF. The choice of a 50mm moderate telephoto was good… -
Re: New guy - kit help please
After reading this all of my research lately might help you, I have been looking at the Olympus DSLR cameras mostly due to the e420's tiny size. So far, the reviews I've seen have been pretty good, and the users who have reviewed it seem to really like them. The thing I was surprised with though is how cheap you can get a… -
Re: pimped-out gimp
Processing raw files with GIMP I'm a little late to the party, but better late than never... :D There are GIMP plugins and standalone tools for processing raw images on OS's like Linux. One of the most powerful is dcraw (http://www.cybercom.net/~dcoffin/dcraw/), which supports a ridiculous number of cameras (over 150!)… -
Re: GPS unit for Nikon
I just recently purchased an EasyTag Bluetooth (B1) for my D7000. I bought it online from www.e-geotag.com for $150 + $12 shipping (you have to add both the product and the shipping to your cart on their site). For that price, I received a great package and excellent product. I'm very happy so far. You can see the package… -
Re: Lens repair
It looks like you have a Haminex Practica TL and an Accura Diamatic 35mm, f2.8 lens. Unless the camera has some sentimental value I (regrettably) suggest that the lens has almost no real value and your money would be better invested in newer equipment. If you decide to proceed, it looks like the lens fungus is very… -
Re: Rebel XT Questions
If you want a macro/portrait lens, I'd suggest the EF-S 60/2.8 macro rather than the EF 50/2.5 macro. The 60 does 1:1 closeups (the 50 only 1:2) and gets rave reviews. Honestly, the 18-55 isn't a bad lens - indoors with flash it works just fine and lets you see what kind of shooting you'll be doing in the future for a very…
