Re: what does F1.8 or 1.4 give me?
In whole stops: (you do the math for 1/3rd and 1/2 stops!) Bold indicates breaks in the mathmatical patterns. Apertures (f-stops) 1 1.4 2 2.8 4 5.6 8 11 16 22 32 45 64 Shutter speeds 1sec 1/2 1/4 1/8 1/15 1/30 1/60 1/125 1/250 1/500 1/1000 1/2000 1/4000 Each step up/down is a "stop", and is simply a measurement of light.… -
Re: Flashpoint II 1820 Monolight Kit
I hear ya, Angelo. Yes, I purchased the Adoram Flashpoint 620 wedding kit last winter. I have been satisfied with it. I looked at the higher output 1220 and 1820, but didn't think I would need the power as the room I use is only about 20 x 22 feet. The kit comes with two umbrellas that are white with a black outside… -
Re: what the get? $500 budget?
I shoot an Olympus. Love it! I picked up a new E-410 last year off of ebay for $400. I got the 14-42mm and 40-150mm lenses along with that price. I just ordered a Zuiko Digital 35mm Macro from Cameta for ~$165. It's a terrific little camera and has taught me a TON (along with the wonderful people here at dgrin). There are… -
Re: Lenses?
The wonderful thing about photography is, once you get decent enough equipment, the camera no longer holds you back. It's all about the photographer. I'm a gadget-geek myself and while i tend to get the best of the best for most electronics, I find my photography skill (or lack of it) keeps me content with with "lesser"… -

Re: Is Photography Over?
They all say so much and yet say so little. And they are obviously talking about photography as an art form. Not about anything else (like making a living from photography, as an art form or otherwise). Roger Ebert wrote this on his blog (http://blogs.suntimes.com/ebert/2010/04/the_golden_age_of_movie_critic.html)… -
Re: Are your uploaded files darker than the originals?
Right now I'm looking at the Ice Eggs prints - one Auto and one True - 3 ft under a 33" soft box with a 55W CFL bulb at 5000K. The Auto is about 1/3 to `1/2 "stop" too light, IMO, as it's losing highlights. (looks pretty good in dimmer light, however). The True is looking like a "dark and stormy night" - about 2/3 to 1… -
Re: Help. Tips for trip/cruise Alaska.
Lucky you. I love Juneau. When are you going? In Skagway, there is a GREAT pizza place if you're there in summer and like pizza. It's called Pizza Ria Roma 2 (or something like that). A guy named Freed owns it. Amazing pizza. I was just in Juneau for christmas break and used my polarizer all the time. But we somehow got… -
Re: Domain Name Questions
I agree with Jim, above. Why not use Go Daddy?? I just registered 4 domains with Go Daddy. Smugmug and Go Daddy are linked in a way that, when you enter your domain in your control panel at Smugmug, it sends the info to Go Daddy and updates your cname (or whatever it's called). I think if you use another domain registrar… -
Re: Arrange Photos
Andy, I think that users would be much more keen to use the "uservoice" system that you have set up if they saw a tangible result from doing so... As it is, it looks a bit more like where feedback goes to die, at least for "non-pros", than any kind of active feature request / improvement request system. Pro users are…
