Dealing with a difficult client
Hi everyone. I am in need of advice on dealing with a difficult client. I will try and give the quick story. I shot photos for a friend of a friend on Oct 18th. She had three daughters that I shot. I did not charge her a session fee. She had requested a red barn, which I found, but then she complained that there weren't… -

Adjustment Layer: A magical way to edit your photograph without changing the original image. In a darkroom, when you make a change, you can only do it to the original photo you’re printing. But with some photo editing software, you can make an almost unlimited number of copies of your image. They’re all stacked on top of… -
Re: Full frame or not?
So I jumped the Canon (and thus full frame) ship about three months and have been using a Fuji X-T3 since then. I spent about 11 years shooting a full frame DSLR prior to that (my 5D mkii), having switched up from the 20D. Here are my thoughts having gone back "down" to APS-C. A few caveats. I don't really shoot wildlife,… -
Re: Canon's new IS system
It's my impression that there has been from the beginning something of a halo of controversy around the 24-70. Many, many comments down the years of bad copies, and back/front focusing problems. On the positive side, people talk about it's useful range on a FF, its color and its bokeh, but it's rare to hear this lens… -
Re: min f stop for those that use 85mm 1.4 for portrait shots
I think your basic methodology is sound. For myself, I have never really played with the DOF calculators, I just use the depth of preview button on my camera and my experience by the seat of my pants. That my sound like heresy to some folks, but I usually know what aperture I need for the DOF I want from past exerience. As… -
Re: Canon 24-105L
"Kdog" had your back before me. Get the lens. Take it out for a few test shots using this method: 1) Basic AF accuracy is best accomplished using a flat target, i.e. a brick wall or other large textured surface. If a camera/lens cannot accomplish this task, it has no chance of passing any subsequent AF tests including real… -
Re: AF micro adjust!
Yes, I do. The first thing to mention is that you need to simplify the subject matter to a simple flat target, with enough texture to make AF dead simple, and enough size to eliminate AF distractions. As such, I no longer recommend using a "slanted ruler" or similar as the target, nor do I recommend using a high-contrast… -
Re: MS Soccer Feedback Request
Hey Andrew, I am a Canon shooter, but the basics are the same. Also, I have never used an extender, so don't really have any idea how much degradation you get with one. However, I routinely use a 70-200/2.8 at the field--sometimes with a full frame body--and get some great shots. Of course, I need to be close to the… -
Post-edit HELP of a personal nature
I know this is a strange one, but clock's running and I'm on the spot (family spot, lol). My wife's running for Mayor of our Chicago suburb, pop around 18,000. Right off the bat, it's a payless job, as are all other elected positions here, a paid Village Manager and staff run day-to-day operations, elected positions ate… -
Small camera roundup
Those who have been following my search for a new travel camera know I've been checking out a number of models. I think I've finally worked my way through the contenders, and since a few people wanted to know what I discovered, I'm starting this new thread with a run-down plus some sample shots. This is NOT a scientific…
