Re: Photographer of the yr 2015 shortlist
This one: "JWildgoose This is all so interesting, I worked as one of the freelancers at The Guardian (and later The Observer) in the mid 80s and early 90s and it strikes me how much has changed, and how much hasn't. Digital has made a huge impact on the industry, as has internet connectivity. Firing pictures down a fast… -
Re: Lens info
The Canon EF-S 17-55mm, f2.8 IS USM is a "constant-aperture" lens and it is fairly well controlled for distortion at the wide end. It's also very sharp at maximum aperture at all focal lengths. All of this adds up to considerable extra "control" over DOF as well as the ability to use the lens throughout it's range without… -
Re: A few keepers from 2 recent weddings
The idea is simple- 90% of the images taken at a wedding just don't NEED more than basic color correction and cropping. And I'm sure you and everyone would agree- If you have to put more than 30-60 seconds per image into more than 10-20% of the delivered images, you're being VERY in-efficient. I actually manage… -
Re: file naming, keywords
I'm currently using files that are 20 - 25 years old. Some of my data is coming off of my QIC 80 tapes and, yes, I can still access them at home. My disaster plan gives me access to my data 50+ years into the future. It is all about individual needs. Actually it isn't false whatsoever. You have even quantified your own… -
Re: One year at SmugMug - where am I wrong?
I am going to make a recap of what has come out of the discussion till now. - Stats: I started the thread from the consideration that 1 sale from 27.000 yearly visits sounds as a disappointing result to me. I then found out it's a rather standard average. QT Luong states in his blog he needs 21.000 visits to achieve a sale… -
Re: Congratulations nightpixels for the DSS #87 (Three) Winning Photo!
Hi Chris, Thanks! One post-processing technique I use on some of my images is I turn the whole image dark first and then start to selectively brighten the areas that I want the viewers' eyes to get drawn to. In other words, burn the whole image at once, then dodge selectively. This technique also adds a bit of a grungy and… -
Dome,Knoya, Tikishla 08/09/05-08/11/05
My friend Shasta had been waiting for a long time to get in her first hike and we finally were able to get outside. The weather had been great for the last few days and the weather reports said there would be only clear skies. She arrived at my house in the morning and we packed and headed for Stuckagain Heights. We left… -
It's Time to Evolve
I'm seeing a lot of images posted on Facebook these days like this: (my image, not my usual watermark, just an example) These photographers would be wise to evolve. Some of these watermarks have the copyright symbol or wording like "for use only on (mywebsite).com", etc, and all of them are ugly and obtrusive. Sports… -
Land of fire and ice
Hello everyone! a short while ago, one of my dreams came true when my girlfriend came over from Taiwan (thats not china btw) and we both went to Iceland. Here are some photos of iceland, i hope you guys like them. 1) We tried to get out of Reykjavik as soon as possible. It's cute but iceland is best enjoyed out in the open… -
Eating from Maryland to Hawaii and Back
At 80 years old and using a mobility scooter, I'm no longer able to take the marvelous exciting adventures that I see here in the Journey's section. But I do like to write about and take photos of my travels. My latest trip was a Group Cruise from San Pedro to Hawaii. So I decided that my goal would be to go on the cruise…
