[Implemented] Random Slideshow Order

Using the new SM: does anyone know how to make the homepage slideshow play images in random order? I thought sure there'd be the option in the "playback" tab, but "nope..."

I really don't want the slideshow to play images in the same order each and every time someone visits the site. Any CSS hacks that'll do the trick?

Thanks in advance.

As far as I know, that is currently not an option with the new SM slideshow. But I have seen it being requested multiple times since the new SM was unveiled. So I just hope SM folks will try to provide that option in the near future.

Here's a question for you. Why when redesigning smugmug would you not just automatically include such a basic option.
Have you ever seen a picture viewer with a slideshow option that didn't have a random option?
Instead we have to beg for it.

    Cheers,

+ Lots from me too. As said previously, who wants their site visitors to see the same images at start up all the time?
My opinion does not necessarily make it true. What you do with my opinion is entirely up to you.

Show us how fast AND thorough the 'new' SmugMug can be!
:s85I just spent 3 months teaching myself enough HTML and CSS to customize my site, doing such things as extending the org hierarchy from 3 to 4 levels. Then, a week before going 'live', the new UI was announced. So far, my coding experiences (here and on many other huge IT projects) have really made me appreciate what a gargantuan task this is, and how, like when Apple re-wrote their OS from the ground up while Windows kept patching and adding on to their crumbling foundation, SmugMug has realized how intrinsically valuable this is to their long-term viability, truly architecting for future innovations.

That said, another big feature for which I inserted lots of code (thanks to jfriend and many others who helped) were stretchy slideshows that ALL have RANDOM STARTS and RANDOM PLAYBACK (not to mention many eye-catching, striking transitions). To my viewers/customers, this is a big reason for returning repeatedly: my site is ALWAYS FRESH and EVER-CHANGING!

As a business, being able to attract repeat customers has a HUGE impact on the bottom line. Up until this point, I've been thrilled with how quickly I've been able to create a beautiful new site, even planning to unveil by the end of this week ...

...... but now, I've stopped dead in my tracks .. I've got to either come up with others ways to keep my site fresh (most likely by manually changing other features to re-arrange content, which translates to less time for shooting), or hold off on unveiling. I know that the code to do this already exists here, and though it must be adapted to the new architecture, it's not like coding something new from scratch, and I've personally coded stuff like this on many large enterprise systems -- it should be a relatively easy and quick fix.

And while we are at it, slick transitions can not only attract people to my site, it can be another differentiator for SM, as well.

So, how fast can we make it so?

The excellence of the new architecture is already facilitating accelerated implementation of (overlooked) 'features'. I throw down the gauntlet: Show us how fast AND thorough the 'new' SmugMug can be!

Yes, I too would like to get the random slideshow option back (random start and random order) as no visitor to the site is likely to sit around on each visit to see if something different comes up, then yawns when the same images appear when it starts...

I'm using the keyword option for the slideshow and keep adding more shots with the appropriate keyword, but it's slow and time consuming (and you can only use one keyword - add another and nothing appears at all!).

Please can we have this basic facility back again?

The simple solution to this is to use a smart gallery as the source for your slideshow. This will allow you to search for more than one keyword. Of course with these searches the lack of a random option in the slideshow is even more glaring.

I would not want random start to be combined with random order. I want Random Start for sure, but since I'd like to control the order, I would want Random Order to be a separate choice or option... not combined with Random Start.

Smugmug - Random Slideshow - Any News?
SmugMug - Any news for us on getting our random slideshow back? Will it happen or not? I've seen lots of requests but can't find any SM response to those requests - Just the sound of silence.

Have your slide shows play in the same repetitive order time after time is a big step back on what we had before.

    Thanks.

Can't help but notice that adding random as a slideshow option is the most common request in the forums.
And yet there has never been even one acknowledgment by smugmug that this is a glaring step backwards.
There has been no promise that it will be attended to. What's up with this?

Well, talk about glaring.... there's simply a dearth of responses to anything, really. One glaring mistake they made & haven't remedied is that they didn't hire even a fraction of enough new people to work in these forums and act as relays during this huge roll-out. How they could've forgotten about this is beyond me, and if they've been getting 1000s of new members, certainly money to hire shouldn't be an issue. There's just so few.... there should be at least 10 people like MBonocore (or just below him) to keep the communication healthy between all these forums & the people running the company. Huge gaping hole in SmugMug right now. (and when I said "new people", I meant of course people who've been with the company in some capacity or had sites here for a long time who thoroughly understand the history & all & can offer competent, informed answers.

Not sure that is the reason why. Other issues are being responded to, or at least talked about.
With the issue of adding random to the homepage slideshow all there is is silence.

And I wonder about all the SmugMug folks who don't have the time SOME us have to peruse all these different threads and make comments to help bring back what should have been basic functuality to their sites. Guess they have no idea of what is taking place behind the scenes here. Been a Pro member here since around 2006. It took me YEARS to finally get in to DGRIN and start figuring out how to customize my site. And back then, it was a whole new world even though I have a strong background in programming. So, for folks with no background, they just use whatever is handed to them - and with the new release, fewer things have been handed to them. Yeah, there are some things actually new in the release - not arguing that. It's just so many basic things that beta-testers would have caught if they were customizers and not basic users. OR SM decided not to listen to them and are now catching hell for that mistake. Rant over.

    Hi Anna Lisa,

We do have heroes that help me here on DGrin, but they have had to pay attention to the box, while I handle most of the DGrin threads. This is known, this is in the hands of the product department. I want it just as much as you do :D

I will let you know when I have more information regarding this.

"Box"?? What's "the box"? Sorry, I may be dull, but I pondered this for some time & then gave up guessing! Anyway, glad to hear it's at least "wanted". Just have to hope it'll happen.

"Box" = the SmugMug Help Desk. The "inbox".

Ahhhh, haha! I'd gone from the sandbox to the soapbox to the boombox. Let's all have a box o' chocolates, then all will be right with the world & Michael will be better able to suffer through the inbox! mwink.gif [ETA: Plus 100 for the Random Slideshow Option!]
