You know Baldy, I was thinking. What about the anti-vibration feet commonly used for telescope tripods? Do you think those would work?
Got me. I don't know anything about them. ne_nau.gif

So I shot maybe 6 panos in different light from the exact same spot and I'm stitching the second-darkest one now. I'll post a low res version when it finishes.

This means I could still do the blend we thought about from dark over by the Bay bridge to lighter over by the Golden Gate.

I'll have to drop some off. You can give them a twirl but the idea is that they dampen vibration.

    O H.... W O W

You got to love these COLD but clear nights. I was photographing the sunset tonight and the clouds were fantastic. I actually saw "red rain" falling out to sea.

I'm glad you took a chance and went to the island!

We still have some stormy and very cold weather coming up -- you may not be done yet after all :D

That's only 3 hours away -- why go to sleep at all? rolleyes1.gif

So, you'd get to the island around 4 a.m.? Light before the dawn, then the sunrise?

Well I'm thinking of shooting from twin peaks toward the city to the East. So the sun would be coming through the clouds, if there are any.

Kinda this shot but with a long lens to get in on the good parts:

We have more wall space to fill, doncha know.

I haven't been to twin peaks in ages.

Tomorrow (oh, that's actually today, Laughing.gif) I'm headed down to San Jose. Wish I knew if Skyline Drive got any snow, I'd take the long way down.

Good luck with your shot I hope it all works out for you. I really like your last Treasure Island shot, can't believe how sharp and clear everything looks.

Here's a quick & dirty stitch of one taken maybe 10ish minutes before,
when the sky was a little bit lighter.

You like it lighter or darker?

I like the lighter one a bit more. I can see more of the clouds and that seems to give it depth that is not present in the darker one. Especially over Ft. Mason.

It pains me to say it but that boat kind of ruins it for me. It's hard for me to to say that as this is the thread that convinced me that SmugMug is where I should be putting my photos.

I was wowed from the very first image in this thread, I could see nothing wrong with it. Then as the project progressed I just became in awe of what I was seeing. I just need to convince my girlfriend that we should do something similar in our new flat.
http://dexterfriedkin.smugmug.com/ - A work in progress. Hopefully someday it'll be filled with many great pictures instead of a couple of good ones.

the lighter one is not as dramatic but the details in the clouds make up for it. When printed, I can imagine myself staring in awe at both scenes.clap.gifclapclap.gif

I suppose it depends where it will be displayed and the lighting in the room. I know this wasn't an answer you wanted but since the picture isn't simple how could the answer be???

Cloning out the boat is no problem.

I think there is detail to be had in the clouds and buildings/bridges that I didn't pull out on this quick & dirty stitch.

Dramatic sky, but the rest is a bit dark IMO. Not as good as the last one. I very much like the colors we got last week.

This is nice - but again, there's a lot of darkish spots. But, the overall look / feel is REALLY dramatic. It comes down to your personal taste - do you want the orangey / red or the blueish colors ?

Where is the location you guys are shooting this pano from? I am taking a trip to SF next week and would love to shoot the bay bridge from this same vantage point.

I feel like Goldilocks: I love the drama in the darker one but not the loss of detail in the sky and love the detail in the sky in the second but not the overall lightness. Something in between feels like it would be juuuuust right. mwink.gif

That aside, my God, the clarity is so sharp it almost hurts my eyes! Gorgeous! Marvelously done. clap.gif

Personally I like both the reds and the blues - but the blueish one definitely has IMPACT - I think I'd err towards the latest one - but the slightly lighter version

btw Baldy I think your public profile might be slightly out of date mwink.gif - 20D + 70-200 2.8? headscratch.gif

thanks, i didnt know if pixel peeps would see a area cloned or not...(on this scale)

as for the clouds... to bring out some luminosity should not be a problem if you pre did it in ACR right? what in the world would you use to enhance this big of a file anyway...does CS4 have a limit in size like CS3?

anyway, this is amazing what you have already....good luck, i hope to see this in person one day....

I have been trying to stitch the last pano Andy and Bald shot with PTGui.
The pano here is made from the original images and settings from when
they shot it. The other half stitched together well, but I had a lot of
trouble producing this image. They missed shotting a frame in the sky and a
frame of the buildings. I did a quick cloning job. I was not able to get the
sky to stitch together well. You can see the stitch marks in the sky.

My biggest problem is the slowness of my computer. Once it was stitched, I
needed to fix some things in photoshop. I used a Macbook pro at first, but
then resorted to my PC, because photoshop seemed to work a lot faster
with it. So, whenever I tried to crop/stictch/clone/copy I would have to
wait minutes or hours for it to complete on either computer.

One part I liked about this pano was it was very easy to stitch together
the other half because of Baldy and Andy's precision when shooting. It was
just hard to stitch this half because there were no control points for PTGui
    to use in the sky.

So, this is not done, but I am just giving you a preview of this pano.

    Good Job, cool Kevin!

Mmm that quality is oh so good. I'm not worried about the sky clone - I'm sure, given a completed .psb file, I an handle any sky cloning issues that need doing - even up close, nobody'd notice.

Ditto the boat in the blueish attempt from today.

It's all up to what Baldy decides :D

    Dang!

I like them both the Dark is more striking to me, but I have to scroll to see it all, so I like the transition.

What I am just as much in awe of is the amount of things that others are seeing, I am still learning that part.

The blue one may hold up better in the sky. See the vignetting (stitch marks) in Kevin's sample stitch? We have to try some anti-vignetting in the raw conversion to get that out. It'll be noticeable at 6' tall.

    But wait. There's more.

    Call it fear of commitment.

Call it father-son bonding. Ben got a 40D the other day and wanted in on the action.

    Call it hedging our bets.

    Call it crazy addiction.

But here's the second-darkest of tonight's attempt (uh, that would be #12). I'll do a lighter version when I get a chance.

    Your thoughts.
