Steering a bit back on topic...that time of year there, with fall foliage will be stunning, but it will also be VERY popular. Any hotel booking should be done very far in advance. Might be able to make this one
Having never been to a shoot-out before - would it be possible to have a pro set up a learning session; e.g., a half-day doing something with newbie photogs to concentrate on a particular shooting technique? I have nothing in mind right now - it's just an idea/suggestion.

Try to get in for the next one and you will learn a lot.
This was my first trip and it was a very good experience- not just because of the pro but because of all the other photographers as well
There were three pros: Andy, Dave Porter, and Marc Muench
Each day it was posted where each pro was going and at what time. You could choose which location to go to and if you wanted you could shoot right next to them and pepper them with questions.
They also had some mini classes where Marc and Dave went over some PS techniques and there were a couple critique sessions.
They do a very good job of trying to do exactly what you ask.
Another Idea is see who is close to you that you and try to do a mini meetup with them. The more you are around other photographers the better you will become.
"The Journey of life is as much in oneself as the roads one travels"
I've watched these trips for the past few years w/ envy. Being an academic type, you tend to take "vacation" when classes aren't in session (which they always have been for the past shoot outs). But I'm seriously thinking about finding a colleague to cover for me and get my rear out there this year (assuming I get my reservation in on time).
Yeah - I met with Marc last year and learned a lot. My suggestion was more for others, too. Some "grumblings" I have heard through thre grapevine is that some people are afraid of shootouts - so many people that they will get lost in the crowd type of fear. I have tried to assuage that - but it keeps coming back that they want to go but would love to have a time when people will be focusing on a learning thing. I tell them that the entire event is a learning event - ask and ye' shall receive the knowledge from those around you.

And if the shootout size is too intimidating, there are always the workshops. Limited to 10 people, and two pros. You're guaranteed to get some one-on-one time.
I look forward to hearing more details about the trip. Early October is a perfect time of year for me. I don't know much about Acadia, so that will only add to the excitement.

While we're finalizing certain logistical things before posting any official signup related info, I would like to tell y'all this: find a roommate!
That is, of course, unless you wanna pay for the whole room by yourself (not an issue for Path, Jack, Ed and other happily married photographic couples)
Stay tuned!

And we encourage roommates since we only have a limited set of rooms blocked of for dgrinners!
And the other benefits of a dgrin roommie? They help with the extra-early wakeup for sunrise shoots!
Just to let you weenies know....I'M IN.....so you're stuck with me.....as soon as you put up the sign up sheet.....(now watch, I'll be out of town for a week, miss the thread and it will be full).
Location is - drum roll - Acadia NP.
EDIT: Date range - October 8-11 2009
Not trying to be a troublemaker, but is this date range carved in solid New England granite? The reason I ask is that that's actually pretty early in the foliage season for Bar Harbor.
I grew up in the Boston area, and the Bar Harbor/Mt Desert/Ellsworth/Blue Hill region is among my absolute favorite places. I've been there a number of times and, based on both my (admittedly questionable) memory and the official Maine state government website's historical data (http://www.maine.gov/doc/foliage/whenandwhere/index.html), if you're hoping for peak fall color, you may find yourselves disappointed.
According to the data, the peak color is trending later and later, each year; a trend that will only accelerate as global warming increases. Last year, the peak was in the third week of October. It looks like that will probably be this year's peak, as well. Odds are, next year's peak will be at least that late. It's still one of the prettiest places on the planet, at any time of year, but you're going to have to get very lucky to catch the best color that early. Just thought I'd point that out, in case it's still possible to reschedule.
I was also wondering if people had thought about renting a couple of people-hauler type vans, rather than a dozen cars. Less flexible, but there will be more than enough cars fighting for the limited parking available at that time of year. A caravan could be difficult to manage. Circling a parking lot at Christmastime, looking for a parking space, is bad enough; circling an island...

We're taking all the precautions that your (and similar) situation shan't affect your ability to sign up
I was there 10/11/08 and I figured they had about a week to go to peak. Still their was lots of color. By the end of last week the leaves were all gone an hours drive north of Acadia. I took some pictures with film the 11th but haven't had it developed so I can scan it yet. When I do I'll see what the colors were. Its a beautiful area so the photo opportunities aren't limited to colors alone, although a lot of color will be there I'm sure.

Thanks for the feedback; the dates are set.
We have to take many things into consideration including accommodations, possible foliage color, weather patterns and most importantly availability of the pros! In the end, they are the ones who set the final date. If we move the dates, we'll loose the pros, and I don't think we want to do that.
And it's a beautiful area and people will be taking photos of many things and not just colorful leaves. I hope!

Thanks for the suggestion, but it's really up to the shootout participates to figure out their travel arrangement and we highly encourage carpooling. In all honesty, I find that a SUV/mini-van with four photographers is probably the perfect arrangement since it gets full rather quickly.
*Luggage (one checked bag per person for the plane ride) + Camera gear + snacks/water thrown on top
Unlike a workshop or a photo tour, the entire group does not stick together for the duration of the trip and move together like a heard of animals. In general, dgrinners group up and wander off on their own and photograph what they deem interesting. And you'll probably find people wander from Acadia and Bar Harbor into various parts of the state.
The shootout is more like an meet-up of people from the wonderful dgrin community.

Cruise ships, puffins, dolphin, (whales will probably have left the area for warmer waters), fog ... lotsa wonderful shooting opportunites! Count me in when the sign-up is ready

That answers a question I had. Sounds like if it gets all filled up, someone can crash the party as long as they arrange all thier flight, lodgings, etc?

FWIW - If I win the lottery (or whatever selection process will be used), I have convinced my wife to join in the fun this year :ivar - as a real, honest to goodness shooter!! So, I have a built in roomy

So space will not be limited to only active dgrinners?

Uh, huh. One (1) checked bag for clothes but how many for Camera Gear? I'm sure Nikolai has an opinion. I suppose if you left out camping gear, four people could fit in one SUV.

It's in the works, can't say at the moment.

We packed 6 in Jacks's Acura - with the photo gear . Skippy, was that trunk space comfy?

We are also going to be sure we have hotels well taken care of, and all feedback considered, so that we help the shootouts evolve as best we can!
We are hurrying as fast as we can (as me mother used to say).
