Sorry, but I won't be signing up for this trip. I'm going to
Death Valley for a weekend in April so I want to devote my
resources for that trip.
For years I've been meaning to see Marta Becket perform at
the Amargosa Opera House in Death Valley Junction.
She'll end performances this year so there are only a few months
to see her on stage. I don't know what her show is about these
days, I don't think she does ballet anymore though.

That sounds great. I've heard about her. Let us know how it is!

Make sure they will let you take photos inside the opera house. I went with a group just over two years ago where we had special permission to photograph inside the opera house, with tripods, et al. In order to get permission, we had to sign a form restricting our use of the photos to private, personal use. The opera house is a quite a sight. Entirely hand painted by Marta herself. It is an interesting building.
We did not meet Marta and I have not seen her performances, but the photos ops inside and out around the property abound.
I'm signed up for Saturday 3/28. Any idea who else is going and any suggestions on equipment to bring?
I think I saw somewhere that the hours are 10am - 7pm?

I will be there Saturday as well. I'm not sure what the hours are either. It would be good to know. Did we get the hours extended or not?
For equipment, I'm bringing my 5D with 24-105mm and possibly the 30D with Lensbaby attached, or I will just swap the Lensbaby with the lens on the 5D. I will probably decide the morning of.... Also bringing my tripod and other stuff normally in my pack (filters, flash, remote shutter release, etc.)
I heard back from the River Tour folks. From dgrin they have the following paid for:
Both Days:
DavidTO and son chatkat and guest
cuong
No guest - just me and the rest of you.
1. Where do we meet?
2. Do we bring lunch or do we stop somewhere for lunch?
I forwarded the correction to Mark. The meeting place is in the link I posted above. I believe we stop for lunch, but it should all be covered in the email you get the week before from them.

Only a few days left to polish your lenses. Lunch on Olvera Street - haven't been there in years. A harbor boat ride on Sunday too.
Really looking forward to two full days shooting. Anyone want to carpool from West Ventura County? I am happy to drive on Saturday and I can fit 4 plus gear. Dave, can I go with you on Sunday?

I'm coming from Fillmore. Looking forward to spending the day with everyone. It will be a new experience for me. I'm used to shooting dogs and dogs doing sports. Urban stuff will be a challenge. Any suggestions on what to bring? I'm thinking 40d + tripod + ? lenses - I have 16-35, 24-105, 70-200. Do you think someone will be babysitting gear left in the van?
Can anyone help me with shooting for HDR? I just got Photomatix and went to a seminar last week and got some neat ideas.
Me too
I am probably bringing the same lenses you are plus a 50 1.2; My gear is in a backpack although I might leave one of them home. Sometimes I like to shoot with just one lens for something like this but there are so many possibilities. Yes, I can help with the HDR. I am coming from Thousand Oaks. My husband Frank is going to come on Sunday - he signed up today for Sunday.
And Urban landscape holds still (well we hope it does) unlike dogs doing Agility and running through tubes, weave poles and up ladders.

I had a great time. Mark and Ken are fantastic, and they were joined by Maria, who did a lot of the behind the scenes work (like ordering lunch! ) and Roberto, who did an awesome job driving us around.
I make no claims for the following shots, I've just breezed through and grabbed some, to give an idea. Most are completely untouched by me, just uploaded teasers of what's to come. They're out of order, too.

That's it for now. Oh, one thing I learned: I had set my camera to 2008 by mistake, so now I have to change the metadata on all these shots.
Unpacked!
Dave, How'd you do that so fast? Oh yeah, you only shot 12 megapixels today while I shot 20 plus the 12 from yesterday.
It was a great day - that boatyard was amazing, I think I have every kind of possible category of image - from people, to landscape to wildlife - I got birds in flight today and a dolphin, flowers, urban landscape, too.
It was great to meet everyone that went and have faces to put to the names.
Dave, thatnks for putting this together - it was really top notch; I highly recommend this enough to do it again. Excuse me, I have 32 megapixels to run though my workflow!
We can all spend a whole day at any one of the sites we visited and it still would not be enough. I'm glad to be a part of this tour and get the chance to see and learn about places that I've never seen before. To be honest, I was pretty much overwhelmed with the photographic opportunities at these locations that I ended up lagging behind the group. I came away with about 1000 shots for both days so there must be a few keepers. Like I said, I'm the lagger in the group so no pics to post yet tonight.

How was day 2? I enjoyed day 1 and will work on processing the photos this week. A quick glance at them showed some that I liked.
