    www.focusringphoto.com = works
    focusringphoto.com = works
    www.johngillett.com = BROKENheadscratch.gif
    johngillett.com = works

    I don't care about Focusringphoto.com, it's a holdover. I now market myself as "johngillett.com", and that is my top priority to have work. But most of my clients will probably be typing the "www" in front out of habit. Any help? :cry Here's a screenshot of my Godaddy config. No forwarding is being used.

    The one is still broken for me, in both Chrome and IE browsers after deleting all cookies, files, history, etc. For what it's worth, traceroutes from all four examples take the same path and lead to the same spot. But in my browsers, www.johngillett.com, ends at the SmugMug home page (for me at least).

    So it seems to me that my DNS servers are up to date enough to send me to SmugMug, but the one example is getting stuck at the front door, but only for me, not Andy.

    I'm confused, but that's just a natural state of being for me.

    Am I getting the speed boost when I go to johngillett.com? Why is www.johngillett.com going to the SmugMug home page for me, but passing to my account for Andy?

    Thanks for any help, I do appreciate it! :D

    Make sure you are logged in, nickname.smugmug.com and then try it.

    Andy -
    My site is fine, all variations (both custom domain and smug nickname) - it was the previous poster's site that I was trying to get to, the one he said he couldn't access but that you said that you could access. So whether I'm logged in or not shouldn't matter, right?

    I wasn't trying to see the domain info, I was trying to open the site http://www.johngillett.com. That site takes me to the smugmug home page, but http://johngillett.com/ takes me to John Gillett's home page. His complaint was that the full url for his custom domain (including the www) didn't work.

    I thought that's what he was saying, sorry if I caused any confusion here.

    I see one johngillett in the system. That is a Standard account. There is a custom domain that was tied to it but it will no longer work now that he is a Standard user. I just checked his Dgrin profile and that same custom domain is listed on it. So it looks like the same account.

    In order to use a custom domain, you must have at least a Power or Pro account. That is why it is going to the homepage. There may be another account involved but I am going on what I can see. If there are more details, please let me know and we will see what can be done.

    If that is the right account, John will need to upgrade to at least Power for the domain to work.

    I think I understand? I used to have a Pro account, but downgraded to Standard. While I had a Pro account I set focusringphoto.com as my custom URL, so it must have been held over from that. I got an email telling me to make these changes, and linking to this thread, but I guess none of this applies to me, am I right? Because I just have a Standard account, I guess I will have to use Forwarding to send my URL to johngillett.smugmug.com. I guess this also means I'm not eligible for the speedboost, as I'm a lowlife Standard user? :cry

    ETA: I've now set my domain to Forwarding... :-(

    That's bad, as cookies and passwords and shopping carts won't be guaranteed to work properly. We only support CNAME Alias - with a power or pro account.

    I'm really sorry.

    John,

    I have removed the custom domain from your account so that will help eliminate the problems it was causing.

    You will get the speedboost on the johngillett.smugmug.com URL. You should be seeing that already.

    But as Andy said, the forwarding can and will cause problems. That will not get the speedboost I am pretty sure.

    Ok so I got the email and made the changes last Friday. I've come to check this morning and my URL: www.simon-morton.co.uk does not work at all...!

    I've tried the link to test: http://www.smugmug.com/homepage/dig.mg?hostname=simon-morton.co.uk and this fails...!

    What's gone wrong.

    I'm using 123-reg and here is a shot of my settings as they stand:

    Mog,

    Some domain hosts require that you have an A record if you have a CNAME. So you probably want to add the @ A record and point it at 208.79.45.23

    the only other thing I can see is the dig tool is reporting:

    Warning: Message parser reports malformed message packet.
    Using domain server:
    Name: ns.hosteurope.com
    Address: 212.67.202.2#53
    Aliases:

    Host www.simon-morton.co.uk not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)

    That looks like a failure of some type at the domain host before it even reaches us.
    You may need to contact 123-reg to see if they can spot the problem from their end.

    That is where you'll want to make your changes. You want to change the Target for the A record to 208.79.45.23 and the Target for your CNAME to domains.smugmug.com. If you would like us to make the changes for you please send your username for Joker.com and change the password to something generic like smugtemp123 and email that info to help@smugmug.com and we'll take care of the set up for you. DO NOT post that information here.

    Thanks! I made those changes. Don't know what sort of difference I'm supposed to see but it's changed so I should be good, right? thumb.gif

    1and1 not supported in this?
    Hi there,
    I made the changes on my domain provider 1and1 for the CNAME and after a number of hours didn't notice a change. Talked with Joe from support and he indicated that 1and1 was not a supported domain provider and there was nothing else that could be done (outside of changing domain providers, which I am not able to do). rolleyes1.gif

    1and1 is a fairly large domain provider, I was surprised that were not part of the providers 'supported' in this - this is only a guess but given it's size I would also venture this impacts a number of other SmugMug users as well? Can someone confirm that there is no compatibility with 1and1? Or are there plans to get them on board in the future so all can enjoy this high speed wonderness??? :ivar

    Thanks!
    Darin

    Please don't get me started about them. :deadhorse

    Its not that we do not do not support them. It's that they have a.... unique approach to CNAME and A records that NONE of the other domain hosts that I work with daily use.

    In the last few days I have literally set up several hundred custom domains for other customers. There have only been a few problem areas. 1and1 users are the biggest group having trouble. I have seen maybe 20 or so of our customers using them. (the others are companies that use cpanel and simply do not let customers setup the CNAME and A records, they must do it at the domain host support desk)

    What it boils down to is if you use a CNAME with them, it disables your email. If you setup an A record, you can only have one. You cannot have both a CNAME and an A record at the same time using what is called an htaccess file that you host on the account. That is a real pain to setup.

    I agree that it is best to move the domain to a new host. You mention that you cannot do that. Why not? transfer would take your site down for a couple days as the move happens.

    I've just changed my Cname & A record and my site loads.

    However, if I go to http://www.smugmug.com/homepage/dig.mg?hostname=ms-imaging it says reports `fail'.

    It can take 24-48 hours for changes to your DNS records to propagate and reach our servers. You may need to wait a bit.

    That's failing because you didn't put the entire hostname on the url. It should have been http://www.smugmug.com/homepage/dig.mg?hostname=www.ms-imaging.co.uk instead.

    But it's still failing, it appears as if you haven't yet made the change, or if so, your registrar isn't telling the world about it.

    Interestingly I also recieved the following email response from 123-reg !!

    Thank you for your email dated 23rd March 2009,

    I can confirm the IP address you have set to point to is not resolving to any site.

    Have you contacted your hosts in regards to this ?

    headscratch.gif 208.79.45.23 resolves to the SmugMug homepage exactly as it should. The domain does not connect to your SmugMug site until it is entered in your SmugMug control panel. I am not sure why they would say that. ne_nau.gif
