Dgrin Sharp Shooters Challenge #18

Welcome to Round #18 of the Dgrin Sharp Shooters Challenges. This challenge is open to any Dgrin member. It will run from Monday, January 26, 08:00am, EST time (GMT -5) to Monday, February 9, 08:00am, EST time (GMT -5).

The topic ready for your interpretation: High Key or Low Key

Your Judges:
sherstone (Winner of DSS Round #16)
Nikolai (Guest Judge)

IMPORTANT NOTE: Your entry is to be submitted directly into a Smugmug gallery. It's pretty simple, just go to the gallery link below, and follow the upload instructions at the top of the page: Remember, the basics stay the same: 1 entry per person, and the photo must be fresh, taken during this contest period. Do not use a minimal save method (such as "save for web"), and your exif will be embedded in your image, no worries!

To avoid disqualification, read, in full, the Dgrin Sharp Shooters Challenge Rules, there have been some slight modifications.<!-- / message --><!-- sig --><!-- / message --><!-- sig --><!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

Oooooo.... being pulled out of the comfort zone! I have to say that the more general the topic the harder I find it, so this is Good For Me (if a bit terrifying!)

Good on ya Emily for continuing to challenge us. After all, that's what it's about! thumb.gif

Thank you for the link Pyro. I didn't know anything about Low Key and High Key photography until now. When I saw the topic I thought of it in a more literal sense then thought of the personalities of people. I'm sure I will come up with an even different way to think about it when I come back to see this thread again. That's what is so great about this forum. It helps you see in ways you never thought possible.

I intentionally added no "blurb" to this one. High key and low key are very much specific photographic techniques, but I also wanted to leave it completely open to other interpretations.

That is what makes this more desirable and more fun!

    Yippee!
    I'm BACK!!!

I'm sooo happy this is the challenge I came back on! When we did this in school, I did a low key portrait. But for this challenge, I decided to do the harder one and go for the snowy white scene.

I hope I can make it to the finals with this!

    This is a great challenge!wings.gif

Thanks for understanding. I promise, as penance, to tell my students that I failed to read the directions before doing something. They will really enjoy that, the little creeps. :D

This is my first time entering the contest under this new format. How can we see to make sure our image is in there? Everytime I try to look, it doesn't show any images.

So I have to admit to some snooping, after Malte commented about your photo site...

And I was tickled pink that for your 365 project, you gave a nod to Australia Day! Have you been? Do you have a connection, or are you just "worldly" in your observance of holidays?

(although, you should have done it a day earlier if you wanted to do it right blbl.gif)

    Sorry,

my English is not so good, mwink.gif
"High Key or Low Key" a hint please ?

The dictionary was not very helpful in this case.
I hope the pictures will be better than my English wings.gif

From your website name I think you are Belgian (?) but I speak no Dutch and my French isn't good enough to translate technical terms ...

"High key" is a picture that is mostly extreme light tones and highlights and "low key" is a picture that is mostly dark tones and shadows. This link http://www.diyphotography.net/lighti...ey-and-low-key has a clear explanation.

    Hope this helps!

in a nutshell, its stressing your ability to expose an image using the light. high key is the ability to show no shadows with the bg blownout....
lowkey is mostly shadows with the bg black.....

my .01 cent worth of info...

We have an expression in English that says "A picture is worth a thousand words". So with that in mind, here is a link to some examples:

    http://www.worth1000.com/stories/thread.asp?cid=13974&eid=439696

Here are some low key image examples:

    http://images.google.com/images?gbv=2&hl=en&sa=3&q=low+key+images&btnG=Search+images

And, here are even better examples that were provided by Pyro in an earlier thread:
