DSS #23 Unofficial Feedback Thread

Here is the official gallery to give your C&C for DSS#23

Gallery Found Here

This unofficial feedback thread is a catch-all of sorts, lets make it happen:thumb

Anyway, Lets get #23 Feedback started!!

This thread is:
  • a place to post a list of your top ten favorites. (be heard, and let everyone know what images moved you.)
  • a place to post your "the making of my image"
  • a place to ask someone "how did they do that?"(for us all to see:D )
Feedback is an important part of the photographic process. While those selected as finalists get feedback from the judges and those who vote, others are never quite sure where they stand. So share your thoughts both in this thread and with comments in the actual gallery. Constructive criticism should always be welcome.

If you want to make a top ten post in this thread using thumbnails of the pictures, these can be obtained at the DSS#23 Gallery by selecting the picture you want then clicking the 'Share' tab in the upper right and selecting 'Get a Link'. Get a copy of the thumbnail and then use the 'Insert Image' button above. Paste the link into the pop up box and hit OK. That will insert the thumbnail into your post.

Except that 'Share' isn't there in the gallery (at least at this time...)

Yup, that does appear to be the case. The gallery rights have been changed on every Challenges gallery, past and present, to prevent any copying at all. I will edit the original post.

Yes, the easy "share" button has been removed, but it's still easy to post thumbnails: with the image selected in the gallery, copy its URL from your browser, add "-Th.jpg" to the end, delete the jumble of numbers and letters preceding the hashtag (#), change "gallery" to "photos" and that's it. (I've honestly never used a share button to link here.)

    Example

    Change this url
    http://challenges.smugmug.com/gallery/7821877_VUfQz#508585564_r5YQB

    To this

    My favorite ten...

    510101857_eK5c5-Th.jpg512617954_xixz4-Th.jpg512958887_84xMg-Th.jpg515228720_cDZM7-Th.jpg515330013_Z8bdo-Th.jpg

Obvious, in general, I was more drawn to the idea of "parched or saturated" as it related to "dry or wet" rather than the color interpretation. It seemed a little odd to me for the challenge to include both, as the entry topics end up very different and hard to judge against one another (in my opinion only of course). That's not a complaint, just an explanation as to my own thinking. Even when you see my top ten, obviously I judged from the "dry or wet" perspective.

And yeah, it's a little big-headed of me to pick my own image as part of my top ten :patch
Though it wasn't an image I planned out ahead of time, when I came across that little water spigot it just reminded me of a cute little animal reaching out desperately for a sip of water. I struggled a lot with this challenge, so I just had to give a vote to myself ;)

    contest
I'm about to head to Savannah, GA so I don't have time to post my 10 favorites at the moment. I'll have to post again later this evening or the next couple of days.

I did however want to comment on how my image was made.

Many of you have probably seen the fruit in water images before, but as I watched the Masters on Easter weekend, I thought I'd modify the fruit idea and use a golf ball.

    512958887_84xMg-Th.jpg

To get the full breakdown and setup, I've created a blog entry on the process. I hope you take a few minutes and check it out. Always appreciate new followers and anyone willing to link to my site. I'm trying to help people learn the art of photography "From the Ground Up!" With that said, here's the link! I liked the flexibility of being able to interpret "saturated" and "parched" as amount of water and/or intensity of color for this challenge, and it was interesting to see where people went with this. My left brain has a little trouble seeing saturation illustrated with objects that are not especially porous, but my favorites include a range of interpretations.

This is my first posting on Dgrin - aside from my entry - as I am new to SmugMug. I appreciate the wide variety of entries and the helpful feedback people are providing. It was hard to select just 10 from the array of photos here, but here goes - in no particular order.

Some folks had asked for setup info on my image, here's a wider shot of the setup used.
    516931366_RCw9F-L.jpg
The idea came to me in a flash, or at least a dim "Blip", of a shot of a tap with dust instead of water coming out.

Having done a little bit of diy plumbing I had an old outside tap that had a weathered piece of pipe attached that I figured would do and mounted it as you see above. My 1st thought was just to pour in the dried sand via a funnel and it would just come out of the tap under the power of gravity but that didnt work, so I had to fill the 1st section of pipe connected to the tap with sand, then attach the "L" shaped piece and then blow into the free end pictured above to get the sand to come out while holding my camera remote (shown draped on my tripod) and snapping at the right time. It took about 60 frames to get about 6 usable images to choose from.

The bucket would then catch the sand to be re-used as I only had about a cupful of dried sand, and the whole lot was positioned against an old wall in my backyard that is in desperate need of a coat of paint.

Both camera position/angle and light position changed a few times to get the shadows right, I think the flash was set at 1/16th to 1/32 power. The observant among you will have noticed the strange setup of my tripod, the fact is that it is a video head on it and so I have to arrange it like that to take portrait shots. I really must get a decent Ball-head.

Anyway, I hope that answers how I did it, thanks for the interest shown.

Thank you so, so much to those who included my entry on their selection.

I cannot tell how happy I am for this - wow! :ivar

Sorry for my delay in answering. We've been traveling from Germany,
(where I took the water fountain shot) to Portugal...
    - well, we like traveling and because we have an opportunity now, we don't want to waste it...

However, the inconvenience of traveling is sometimes the lack of connectivity.
For the past few days I couldn't access the Internet, so I haven't even seen the last entries to the contest.

I'll insert my comments as soon as I will be able to do it.

    PS:

When I have the chance I take a lot of photos for the current contest theme,
and this was also the case this time.

I just thought to share with you some of the shots I took for this one, if you don't mind...

Here they are, by date taken in descending order:

You are too kind. I really enjoyed executing this challenge and was quite pleased with the shot.

I'm sure you can come up with similar and better, sometimes an image just appears in your mind that fits the purpose needed. The trouble can be getting the image out of your mind and into your camera.

Thank you for your very kind comments
