I didn't realize I could load to smugmug directly from my camera, or at least I never thought about it. I do not see a tool that lets me rotate it in the gallery, but now that I know this happens, I will look into settings and stuff.
I would simply download it again, but I did the big no-no and deleted the images off my card. Anyway, if this is a big deal, I will understand, and there is still time to reshoot, so maybe I can get another shot to enter. Thanks Kerry!

I did say, "I don't see this being a problem," so don't stress over it. I appreciate the heads up. thumb.gif

I was interested in the EXIFs and the Date modified. I notice that if I ran them through Nikons ViewNX without doing anything the dates stayed the same. But if I rated them by adding 9 or 1 rating to it changes the date modified even though it did not edit it at all. I use the rating to seperate and discard the junk. Also tried cropping in camera to see results. That adds date digitized. Very interesting.
Now this in the Nikon world I do not know if Canon user face the same thing.

This was my master plan. It only took 1.5 weeks to get an evening that my daughter was home and we weren't in a push to get her to sleep for school. She has some little virus so we got to stay up a little later tonight (always find that silver lining!)

Image was accomplished by snooting my strobe putting the camera on bulb and hitting the strobe several times in a dark room.

C&C welcome. I might get another night where I can do this. Weekend not looking so good for this.

This is a reaally great idea Andrewthumb.gif I can't think of anything you could do differently, but you might get more feedback if you start a new thread with this instead of adding it to this one, just a thought

Just did that. I realized I accidentally hit the reply button in this thread instead of creating a new one. Perhaps the blow to the head tonight is worse than I thought. headscratch.gif [door bounced shut into head causing head to slam into car -- but the BBQ was good....:D ]

    Hello
Hi, I've had my smugmug account for awhile, and upgraded it to a pro account this past year. I recently started perusing the forums here @ Dgrin, so I thought I'd go ahead and take the plunge into the DSS Challenges. I uploaded an image I shot tonight at the Red Sox game (Byrd in the Bullpen) and as best I can tell it complies with all of the rules/guidelines, if it doesnt please give me a heads up.

Looking forward to becoming part of this community

Hey guys. I was recommended to post here from a member on SVrider.com (motorcycle forum that I frequent too frequently :))

Here's my pic for consideration (though I like my cropped version better):

Hey Wally, glad to see you made it over!

    A couple things:

If you want feedback from the members, make a new thread in the 'challenges' forum (this one) and post the pic.

When you're ready to submit, go to the Smugmug galery (link is on pg 1, 1st post of this thread). You'll need to log in 'challenges' is the username and 'challenges' is the password. Add Photos>To This Gallery>upload.

Once uploaded, you'll need to find the pic, edit the title to have 'username -- title'

I'm really sorry but can someone please help me figure out if there is a way to convert my RAW image to jpeg while having the date modified / date taken remain the same. I have read all the links Llywellyn so kindly posted but I must be too stupid to have not figured it out yet. I have not done anything to the file and have tried to convert it in photoshop multiple times to no avail. I even still have the RAW image on my camera and have downloaded it more then once trying to get it to work. I would like to try uploading directly to smug from my camera but unfortunately I have a new camera (in this case) and the file is 19.9 MB. I absolutely cannot reshoot and didn't shoot it specifically for this contest. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also I'm sorry I've been away for so long... I've had a hard drive crash with almost 2 years of images on it, my backup failed, and I haven't been shooting a whole lot lately... not sure why.

Sorry to hear about your hard drive. Good God, that's awful! That would depress me too.

I know that under Emily we were able to use a RAW file as long as the only thing we did to it was convert it to JPEG so that we could upload here. And, we had a number of entries like that which were not DQ'd, including one of mine. But then, if all you're doing is converting the image yourself instead of having your camera do it...well...Kerry isn't Emily so I'm not sure what to tell you. ne_nau.gif

Michael, sorry to hear about the hard drive. I just went through that myself not to long ago. :cry

You should be able to open the RAW file in Photoshop, option(or alt)-click "Open Image" when Raw Converter pops up, then do "Save As" jpg. That should get you a JPEG with no modified EXIF. thumb.gif

SOrry about the computer woes! Another workaround is to use Picasa (the hard drive version software, not the online gallery) to upload from your camera (I swear I don't work for google, despite how much I recommend this program!). It doesn't adjust any of the metadata afaik, even when you do a "save as" to turn it into a jpg. HTH.

Yeah I've tried in Raw Converter to do the whole save as and just change to jpeg but it's not working. When I upload to my smugmug it shows a new date modified. I even checked the options to make sure no automatic changes are made and it still didn't work. So now I'm reuploading the canon software that came with the camera to try and convert to jpeg. Keeping my fingers crossed. Then I'll try Picasa if that doesn't work (can't hurt at this point).

Ok, I give up... I have apparantly done something in my camera to make it not show modified dates. I have tried uploading both ways, through picasa to the gallery and straight form the SD card to the gallery and neither one shows a modified date. I can look back through my pictures and only the recent ones are like that. Oh well... This is what I took, no crops or edits even in camera but I can't prove it. Delete me if it won't work. I understand.

    **EDIT**
Aha... In looking at one day's photo's... my camera only shows a modified date if it actually was modified... http://donna-niemann.smugmug.com/Other/Newest-photos/7736631_xBmjw/1/641675305_bfDpk The pictures on the first page of this gallery were all taken on the same date, some were cropped and edited others not, like the bright red sunset at the bottom.

13 DQs this round, a majority because of differing "date taken" and "date modified" times. Please note that if you PM'd me or left a note in this thread as a heads up, and I knew what the issue was, I did not DQ. If you gave me no heads up, I had no way to verify why dates were off by a day or more, especially since a majority of entries did not have the date-change issue. ne_nau.gif

Taken before challenge start date: sfphotobug, Eric Lammers (plus not a DGrin registrant headscratch.gif)

Different "Date modified" and "Date taken" times: Mohamed.Ghuloom, Menedots, B Rock, AaronNelson, annsan, learnin, sdways01, miskatonic_university, anonymouscuban, sdgphoto.

I guess I should read these posts. My entry was DQ'd apparently because the "Date Modified" differed from the "Date Taken". I shoot in raw and then convert to JPEG and upload from LightRoom. This will also make the "Date Modified" the day you convert.

This wasn't a problem on past SOOC challenges but I guess it was this time. Well... no worries. On to the next challenge.

thats a shame... I didnt know we needed to report the differences, sorry Kerry for the hassle of Dq'g me and others, I know it must not feel good to need to lay the law on some great people that arnt paying attention.
(Myself, I just thought the honor system was in place) (which ofcourse I dont really believe exists, heck some people still vote for their own images in the voting round, or spread rumors via the underground PM society, or ask for votes from other communities, or, or, or...)
I truely dont blame you for doing what you have to do to try and keep it fair.
but good luck in the battle! I will pick myself up and try again...

I thought we decided that it wasn't against the rules to vote for your own image; only that in most cases it was rather banal and self-centered. ne_nau.gif

I've wondered about this since joining. A lot of places that do challenges like this encourage the self-vote as a way of leveling the playing field. The other idea there is that you should be proud of your entry.

That said, I've always felt weird about voting for myself in things like this. Maybe those who are up for voting shouldn't vote at all.

How does anyone really know who voted for who anyway? The results of who voted for who are only seen by our moderators. I have never voted for myself in any of the DSS challenges but I also would not condemn anybody that truly felt theirs was the only image that deserved a vote, lol.
