Well just found a schedule conflict for me. Good news is the baby shower I am taking my wife to is right near Yosemite. SO I am going to drop her off and go shooting there. We will catch you all at the next one I hope.
I booked my flights today. Be in SFO Oct 27 through Nov 8. 1 Week of vacation and then the convention (AES Convention if anyone wants to attend, I have free passes.) Hoping to get a chance to shoot with you guys.
Have you cleaned off the dust off your camera? Ready to put that glass to good use? Remember where you put your ‘pod? It’s time to go shooting! Dgrin style!
Starting Point: 4 pm Rincoln Park, Base of the Cupid's Span at Folsom St and Embarcadero, San Francisco, CA. If you can’t arrive on time, just wander. We’ll be the folks with the cameras
Wanderlust: Wandering is the key word…. These are some of the places we’ll hit
1) Ferry Building.. some info here
2) Pier 7: Awesome angles in light and in darkness here
3) Justin Herman Plaza – lots of stuff depending on what’s going on -- some google image search of the area
We’ll grab a bit to eat at Gott's Roadside (:eat) on the water's edge of Ferry Building. Afterward, if you want some more, we can shoot long exposure night shots because the lights are just beautiful in the area.
Weather: It’s look like a clear afternoon/night. Temps should be between 60°-70°. It’s always best to wear layers. Save those five inch heels and dress shoes for another day; Saturday afternoon/evening is designed for comfy shoes!
Sunset: 6:51 pm @265.8°; ° Moon’s disc is 40.8% illuminated
Some angles to consider...
From Pier 7:
From Rincoln Park
Getting here: The best thing about getting to San Francisco – there are MANY options!
1) Public Transportation:
-Bart: Red, Yellow, Blue or Green line: Embarcadero Stop
-Muni bus, underground Muni, ferry, cable car or the F-Line streetcar: Lots of option
2) Driving(more like where to park: Note – parking isn’t cheap in the city). These are just some of the parking lots in the vicinity of the Ferry Building
-San Francisco Parking Inc, 75 Broadway, SF 94111
-Golden Gateay Garage, 250 Clay Street, San Francisco, CA 94111
-Embarcadero Center, Embarcadero Four is closest of the four centers
What to bring: Yourself (most important), some glass, a ‘pod, remotes and filters if you have them. And anything else you want to dust off and use again…
Hey Ben! I had no idea you were a CA Dgrinner, since Glacier was long before I moved out here. It would be great to see you out.
The original discussion involved meeting at 4-ish, walking by that big statue with the bow, shooting around Pier 7 and food, but let's defer to April for more specific suggestions such as where to park if you're driving in.
Yep! Sure Am!
And at this point, I'm pretty sure I should be able to make this! Yay!
Still totally bummed I'm going to miss this one after I finally moved out here due to being out of town (aka out of state in Atlanta, GA) for a conference, can't wait to see everyone's photos and definitely look forward to attending the next one! Sunset keeps getting earlier and earlier... I did an engagement shoot in San Francisco last weekend and sunset was just after 7.... already 10 minutes earlier only a week later, crazy!
The Giants are playing the Padres at 1:10 pm that Saturday afternoon on 10/2.
At 4pm, the game should be still going on, but expect the parking lots to be filled in the area and a ton of people in the embarcadero area.
The Giants are in the thick of the pennant race. Expect a zillion people in the area --- expect a zillion happy people especially if they win the game on Saturday. They need to win two games from now until the end of the season to make the playoffs (they're in battle with Padres for the spot).
Actually, it might make for some interesting street photos
It was really great to meet everyone! Cristie and I had a blast just shooting random things. Definitely a new experience for us. We are both exhausted since we were walking and shooting since 10am, but the sore feet and sore neck will heal. Downloading tonight, uploading tomorrow. BTW, getting a lensbaby for sure! That shot was awesome!
PS: Watch out for dive-bombing seagulls! That was unreal!
PSS: Do we really have to wait a whole year to do that again?
Wow, I'd forgotten how much work this processing is...
Taking the pictures was a blast though! It was great meeting you all, and seeing a few faces I haven't seen in awhile! Also, thanks again Travis for letting me borrow your lens!
Here are a few of mine from what I've processed so far!
It was a nice day to take pictures
There was a crazy looking rocket from the future
April wanted a unique angle.
Us photographers don't need much to be entertained. A leaf will do fine.
We ate.
And shot the trolleys.
Lots of student drivers out there.
Left my sister waiting patiently while I tried about a dozen different 30 second exposures of these towers...
You guys weren't kidding when you said you'd have your pics up the next day. But I'm glad you did, because they came out awesomely. It was really great to have such a good group with lots of laughs and dive-bombing seagulls. And burgers and Dr Seuss garlic fries.
The best part is seeing how each of us sees the same subject in different ways. And talking about gear. And the OMG-nerdy photographer jokes!
I really do hope that it isn't just an annual thing, because I'd do it again in any of a million great locations in the Bay Area.
Thanks to April for putting this together and for everyone for coming out!
=( sorry guys..kid got sick the day of an di missed out! I was so looking forawrd this too!
April said you were coming, and I was sad when you didn't. But that's totally understandable because family comes first. We have to catch up again soon, if not with another meetup.
Plagiarism-a-go-go Shootout?
Next time this happens, it might be fun for each of us to review a couple of different people's portfolios ahead of time and come shoot-day try to knock-off each other's styles. Not as a competition with the original photographer so much as a homage.

Hey Cal! That's a really great idea and I love it. I'm totally in for something like that.

Thanks, You got some great shots too! I love the yapping dogs!
And I'm impressed... you got through a lot of shots very quickly, I spent few hours on mine, and I've still got plenty more to work through...
Seriously... Nice job! Can't wait to see more!
