It basically drives itself into the shallows & sucks the sand from underneath itself & puts that sand back up onto the beach. It has a tug that swings its bum around left to right & i assume to help it if it gets stuck.
I really wanted to get a photo of him up close & putting it on the shore but they close the particular section of beach off. The stuff floating is just pumice stone (volcanic) & the sand looks dark because in some areas here have a black sand mixed in.
Gus:
What a great picture! Perhaps it's stating the obvious, but what makes this shot so interesting is the oblivious attitude of the fisherman in the foreground. Despite the powerful stream of muck being shot out by the boat and the attendant noise, the fisherman appears to be sublimely indifferent.

Tks mate...i looked at him in an act of defiance. He continues to fish but angles himself away slightly but continues to keep a wary eye on the monstrosity.
But what does it say? Don't light fires? Run from fires? Look out for animals running from fires?
To me it looks like the monkey is winking so he lit the fire.
Did you also see the instructions for what to do about monkeys? They were all laid out 1-2-3 but I couldn't read them. The only part in English was the title: "Warning: Monkeys".
Thnx !
It's in France, a mountain range called 'les Vosges'. I was hiking there with two of my friends a few weeks ago. Winter was just setting in. The monument you see is on the highest peak, called 'Le Grand Ballon'.
The monument is dedicated to 'Les diables blues' (the blue devils), WW1 time soldiers, a special mountain regiment with blue uniforms, who fought on those mountains.
It looks more desolate than it really is. My friends and I did it the hard way, but you can actually (almost) get there (the top) by car !
Ann, gorgeous bird and amazing shot, it's SO lifelike on my high def screen! Now, you know my ignorance with birds, is this a kestrel or harrier, or something else entirely?

Thanks. It is a juvenile Swainson's hawk. There are a pair that nest in the trees behind my office building, and this year had fledglings. This one was sitting on a chain link fence just outside our building. My coworker very slowly and genlty rode his bike by the fledgling to get it to fly, while I waited to get the shot! It was great, and I should actually give my coworker a copy.
Tks mate. First day out with the 10-22 many moons ago & had it on ISO 800 from the night before so i didnt really get what i thought i got but i will take it anyway.

This does happen quite a bit- especially if lots of people are on. Their posts show as only a minute apart but it was more likely closer than that.

Exactly - so my long time tip -

Apparently it doesn't make much sence:D
But I have posted with a minute difference of 6549 .
When I was looking for my photographer, Ivar posted and didn't notice he had done it.
Now what the heck kind of fish are those that Gus shot - or are those eels. Great pic....
Cheers
