Loan it forward: Lensalign MKii

Want to do some microfocus adjustments on your lenses? Don't feel comfortable with your ability to print out charts and situate them properly for success? Find that the pre-made systems are just too expensive?
Me too. But I bought a lensalign anyway. And I bought it with the intent to share with dgrinners.
Here's the deal: if you'd like to use my Lensalign mkII, I'd like to let you. All you need to do (besides fitting the criteria below and following the rules) is to tell me. I'll keep a list in this thread (by editing the top post) of where it's headed next. Reply or PM me to get on the list. Once I've verified that you meet the criteria I'll put you next in line. You'll keep it for a week (or less) and mail it to the next person. So, if you're interested, read on to see if you qualify and then let me know you want it.
As you can imagine - the rules are very important for this arrangement. Here they are:
1) I can make, break, or change rules at any time as necessary. This is a learning experience for all of us.
2) I keep the list of people who want to use it. The names are posted in order in the first post of the thread. (This post!) Requests are made by posting in the thread or by PM.
3)Please also post when you receive it and when you pass it along to the next person. It's a good idea to send a PM to the next person on the list as soon as you get the lens, asking for their address. It may take them a couple of days to get back to you.
4) Only people who have been members of dgrin for more than 6 months, have at least 100 posts, and have a camera with the micro-adjustment feature can request the unit.
5) You should keep the unit no longer than one week before mailing it to the next person on the list. Please PM me if there are extenuating circumstances and we'll see what the best course of action is.
6) You will mail the unit using US Priority Mail flat rate envelopes (about $5), or a comparable service from UPS or FEDEX (not ground or media mail).
7) You break it, you buy it. Please be careful with it as it's really only a few pieces of (expensive) cardboard. Keep up with the bags and envelope it ships in. They will help it get from place to place and still work. Take your time putting it together also.
8) I (Paul) can break in line at any time and put myself back at the top of the list when I need it.

I've had a smug mug acct for a long time, but not been on the board for that long...but I'll just tell you now, as soon as I looked at the product link, I got an instant headache from all the graphics, so I wouldn't be able to use the cards anyway! lol
But your very generous to share with the friends here!

Please put me on the list. I'd love to try out this contraption.
What was your experience?

Great idea Paul and good luck!
Although you don't seem to qualify for this offer, and the 40D does not have MA, a workout with your 40D and lenses and a LensAlign is still worthwhile. I have done it as a confirmation-diagnostic with my 40D and gear, and I have found my gear close enough not to need attention from Canon. Had that not been the case I would have known which stuff had a problem, and I would have taken action.
The LA is not dropdown easy to use, it's rather fiddly, and there are fairly narrow parameters in which you have to work in order for the results to be valid.

I had great success with the LA once I figured it out. I put it on a table in my office and set up the camera on a tripod at the same height. Depending on the focal length of the lens the distance between the camera and the LA must be adjusted. The hardest part is getting everything aligned. Live view is really, really helpful for this because you can turn on live view, zoom in, and adjust the camera and LA until they are aligned properly. You focus on the targets (on the left of the LA), making sure you can see the red (rear) target through the pinhole on the black (front) one. That front target is at the same point on the focal plane as the number 0 on the ruler.
After that it's a snap. Keeping everything perfectly still, take a picture, zoom in to check the focus on the numbers, make micro-adjustments, and shoot again. Really simple.
Putting it together took about 5 minutes (I was being careful - there are very detailed instructions on how to do it). Getting the camera lined up took another 5-10 minutes. Then it was only a couple of minutes per lens to get them adjusted.
thank you for your generosity, sir.

I've sent a pm to Jim Karczewski who is next on the list and have not heard back. If I don't hear from him in the next 2 days, I will send it on to Zerodog.
